Pines' Green Superfoods give you Green Energy for that race-winning boost.

Packed with protein and vitamins, just one serving equals a serving of a dark-green leafy vegetable.

Give your body the health it needs in tablet, capsule or powder form. Cook with it, eat it raw, put into smoothies.

Pines was the official green food of the Kona Ironman Triathlon and has been the top green food choice for athletes for nearly 40 years. That's because top athletes don't take shortcuts on nutrition, and Pines doesn't take shortcuts in growing, harvesting or packaging its greens.

Check out all Pines' Products; Pines Wheat Grass, Pines Barley Grass, Pines Alfalfa, Mighty Greens and Green Duo.

Introduced in 1976, as the world's first green superfood, Pines products have never been packaged using wildlife-destructive plastic containers but have always been packaged in earth-friendly, amber glass bottles with special metal caps to seal in an oxygen-free environment, which prevents the nutrient loss through oxidation that occurs with plastic containers and paper packets.

Pines green superfoods are available at quality natural food stores everywhere.

lately I have been experimenting with seeds. this is wheatgrass - and the tomcats love it, too.

I'm also trying to grow basil - and even if I really love winter, coldness, snow...I'm longing for some fresh green.

10things: fresh green!

Wyoming big sagebrush steppe in the Taos region includes an understory that is commonly dominated by Agropyron cristatum, crested wheatgrass. Like in much of the sagebrush steppe to the north, crested wheatgrass was likely intentionally sown. Cheatgrass is absent from such sagebrush steppe yet abundant roadside.

This is what our foothills should look like but now rarely do.

Bluebunch wheatgrass (its scientific name is Pseudoroegneria spicata with synonyms that include Agropyron spicatum and Elymus spicatus and others) is a cool season, drought resistant, perennial native bunchgrass that should be in widespread use in landscapes (but rarely is).

Due to late summer moisture this year, each of these "bunches" has vigorous new growth at the base of their golden-dried flowering stalks (culms) of neatly tufted, and beautiful green leaves. Its appearance at this time of year is in general in stark contrast to the same scene four months ago.

Most of the native bunchgrasses like Bluebunch wheatgrass in starting their growth later in the spring hold moisture longer and are in that sense more "fire resistant" and highly beneficial compared to their exotic counterparts which grow faster and dry out much more quickly and therefore burn more readily and much hotter. Local genotypes of this species, and not Crested wheatgrass, should be used in appropriate locations for restoration purposes.

So, the Bluebunch wheatgrass dominance here is a very good and welcome sign and may also indicate that this location was not extensively grazed (and that might make sense since it would be difficult to access, at least by cattle, due to the steepness of slopes leading into the area that surround it) since Bluebunch wheatgrass does not respond well to heavy grazing.

And what may look like a monoculture is in fact not; the native grasses encourage diversity and a relative wealth of other native species co-occur here despite the harsh gravel substrate. This is in contrast to introduced, exotic grasses such as Crested wheatgrass which tend to exclude other species and yet the USDA and USFS continues to use and recommend it in disturbance-restoration projects (and has done so for decades).

Plants can have awns or be awnless; some taxonomists treat those forms as different entities but genetic research has shown that is controlled by a single gene and they should likely not be treated as separate taxonomic entities.

Avoid #GreenSuperfood blends in plastic containers. Not all wheatgrass is a beautiful dark green color like #PinesWheatGrass. Green #superfood blends with additives such as chocolate or spirulina, use the strong colors of such ingredients to disguise wheatgrass that can be more brown than green. Using Pines #WheatGrass and other single-ingredient products allows you see the color, note the aroma and other characteristics so you can judge the quality of each ingredient you use.

Pines does not produce complicated blends. Pines formulas are very simple, and all Pines ingredients are harvested at the right time and packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps. This kind of packaging allow Pines to remove the oxygen. That protects color and nutritional levels. Besides plastic tubs polluting our oceans and land fills, plastic does not protect green food nutrients from oxidation, which devitalizes sensitive #greenfood components.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wheatgrass is a food prepared from the cotyledons of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. It is sold either as a juice or powder concentrate. Wheatgrass differs from wheat malt in that it is served freeze-dried or fresh, while wheat malt is convectively dried. Wheatgrass is also allowed to grow longer than malt is. It provides chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Claims about the health benefits of wheatgrass range from providing supplemental nutrition to having unique curative properties, though few if any have been scientifically proven. Some consumers grow and juice wheatgrass in their homes. It is often available in juice bars, alone or in mixed fruit or vegetable drinks. It is also available in many health food stores as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice and powder. Wheatgrass contains no wheat gluten.

History

The consumption of wheatgrass in the Western world began in the 1930s as a result of experiments conducted by Charles F. Schnabel in his attempts to popularize the plant.[1] By 1940, cans of Schnabel's powdered grass were on sale in major drug stores throughout the United States and Canada [2]

Schnabel's research was conducted with wheatgrass grown outdoors in Kansas. His wheatgrass required 200 days of slow growth, through the winter and early spring, when it was harvested at the jointing stage. He claimed that at this stage the plant reached its peak nutritional value; after jointing, concentrations of chlorophyll, protein, and vitamins decline sharply.[3] Harvested grass was dehydrated and made into powders and tablets for human and animal consumption. Wheatgrass grown indoors in trays for ten days contains similar nutritional content. Wheatgrass grown outdoors is harvested, dehydrated at a low temperature and sold in tablet and powdered concentrates. Wheat grass juice powder (freshly squeezed with the water removed) is also available either spray-dried or freeze-dried.

Proponents of wheatgrass make many claims for its health properties, ranging from promotion of general well-being to cancer prevention. These claims have not been substantiated in the scientific literature.[1] There is some limited evidence of beneficial pharmacological effects from chlorophyll, though this does not necessarily apply to dietary chlorophyll.[5][6]

There are a number of other small studies and pilots on the possible benefits of wheatgrass juice. According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,[7] there may be a need for further study of wheatgrass therapy for ulcerative collitis; they cite a small pilot study which showed regular wheatgrass juice therapy significantly reduced rectal bleeding and overall disease activity.[8]

It has been claimed that wheatgrass helps blood flow, digestion and general detoxification of the body.[9] These claims have not been reliably substantiated, or are no different from similar vegetables. However, in one pilot study of children with thalassemia (a hereditary form of anemia which often requires blood transfusions), of the patients who were given 100 ml of wheatgrass juice daily, half showed reduced need for transfusions. No adverse effects were observed.[10] Another small study of transfusion-dependent patients suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome responded similarly to wheatgrass therapy; that is, the intervals between needed transfusions were increased. In addition, the chelation effect (removal of heavy metals from the blood) was studied for the same patients; the wheatgrass therapy showed a significant iron chelation effect.[11]

In another pilot, which was not placebo controlled, breast cancer patients who drank wheatgrass juice daily showed a decreased need for blood- and bone marrow-building medications during chemotherapy, without diminishing the effects of the therapy.[12]

The food has demonstrated in vitro cytotoxicity to HL-60 (Human promyelocytic leukemia cells).[13]

[edit]Nutritional content

Wheatgrass proponent Schnabel claimed in the 1940s that "fifteen pounds of wheatgrass is equal in overall nutritional value to 350 pounds of ordinary garden vegetables",[2] a ratio of 1:23.[3] Despite claims of vitamin and mineral content disproportional to other vegetables, the nutrient content of wheatgrass juice is roughly equivalent to that of common vegetables (see table 1).

Wheatgrass is also claimed to be superior to other vegetables in its content of vitamin B12, a vital nutrient.[citation needed] Contrary to popular belief, B12 is not contained within wheat grass or any vegetable, rather it is a byproduct of the microorganisms living on plants.[14] Analysis of B12 content in wheatgrass has confirmed that it contains negligible amounts of the compound.[15

As is natural to wheatgrass, these plants have been growing for six months in cold weather and are still not as tall as the extremely unnaturally-grown stuff grown quickly in too-warm, too-crowded conditions that people drink as #wheatgrassshots.

It was real #wholefood #wheatgrasspowder grown like the picture that was used by doctors and hospitals for the phenomenal research that inspired #AnnWigmore and other authors.

The #wheatgrass in the picture has been growing slowly in cold weather for six months, which is natural. Obviously, it is not being grown quickly in too-warm and too-crowded conditions in a tray.

It also does not contain the high mold and bacteria levels that occur when wheatgrass is crowded 300 times too close and roots are prevented from going down a foot deep in rich soil as they should.

In another week, the dehydrated powder from the plants in this picture will contain four times more nutrition than a #wheatgrassshot and will cost a small fraction of what is being charged for them.

Sterling Ballbach chose to participate in the North Stillwater County Pasture Monoculture Diversification Targeted Implementation Plan, developed by the NRCS field office in Columbus based on local priorities. The purpose of the TIP is to renovate the monoculture pastures to a diverse mix of plants that allows for different season of use on these pastures. This option facilitates a grazing plan with more management options that helps to improve the health of native rangeland units. Ballbach property, Stillwater County, MT. July 2021

Rangeland in and around cropfields in eastern Montana harbors an abundance of exotic perennial grass species, most notably crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), smooth brome (Bromus inermis), and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis). Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus) is somewhat common whereas cheatgrass is much less common (except in and around cropfields presumably as a result of the after effects of herbicide application). Abundant native grasses include prairie junegrass (Koeleria macrantha), western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii), green needlegrass (Stipa viridula), and needle and thread (Stipa comata). Wyoming big sagebrush steppe and silver sagebrush steppe were likely once a dominant type of vegetation in this area.

We juiced apples, celery and carrots this morning, so the wheatgrass just grew higher.

We are sometimes asked why Pines (wheatgrass.com) doesn’t develop a line of #superfood “meals” like other companies with dozens of different #vegetables, #fruits, herbs, #chocolate and #probiotics.

Primarily, we see such products as gimmicks. Many consumers want to believe that a long list of ingredients is a good thing. It is not.

With dozens of ingredients, there is no way a consumer receives much of any one of them. Further, we don’t want to dilute the nutrient-density of wheatgrass and alfalfa, which is all certified as #organic. #nongmo, #kosher, #glutenfree.

We think it would be a bad idea to dilute our high quality products that we grow ourselves with outsourced ingredients with lower nutrient density from questionable sources through an unregulated marketplace where an ingredient can change hands several times before it is mixed into one of these blends. Such blends can never have certifications like all Pines' products because many of the outsourced ingredients are not certified.

.

Despite flowery advertising, the most compelling reason for companies to mix all these ingredients is because the filler ingredients in the mix cost considerably less. But the lower nutrient-density of these filler ingredients is why it takes 8 or more grams of one of these complicated blends to equal the nutrition of a 3.5 gram serving of a ‪#greensuperfood from Pines.

Another problem with blends is the consumer cannot inspect the individual ingredients. What was the color of the wheatgrass?. Was it green? When dozens of ingredients are mixed together, the consumer is unable to check each one for color, flavor, taste and aroma.

Some people may be allergic to one or more ingredients in these complicated blends. Moreover, many nutritional authorities caution against mixing some foods and herbs.

The prospect of one of the outsourced ingredients needing a recall is also a concern for us We would rather package what we grow on our own farms so we know how it was grown, handled and tested.

We specialize in single ingredient products and simple blends of nutrient-dense foods that we grow ourselves. Our slogan is: Keep it Simple. Keep it Clean. Keep it Green!

This is our own custom-made version of a special lamp that brings the imaginary outdoors in...to your dining room. But not, like, to eat or something. That would be sort of gross. Unless it was wheatgrass?

She posted this picture and #recipe on Instagram as @eathealthy_fit_mom.

She wants to encourage her kids to eat nutritious foods. The blueberries make it look sugary, but instead of refined sugar, it is loaded with powerful #antioxidants, including several servings of nutrient dense #superfoods like #PinesWheatGrass.

Here is Sharanya's recipe:

#Wheatgrasspowder from @wheatgrass_people with @_healthforce Nongmolecithin, #spinach, #blueberries, frozen banana, blackstrap molasses and soy milk with @lovemysilk peach yogurt and vitamin D drops. So good!!!

Sharanya is wise to choose individual ingredients rather than blends that contain a "kitchen sink" mixture of vegetables and fruits. Often ingredients in these blends are selected based on price, not quality. Poor quality ingredients can be disguised with darkly colored ingredients like #chocolate or #spirulina.

Unlike leafy green #vegetable powders, spirulina is very slow to loose color through oxidation. Spirulina is often used to hide brown colored leafy greens.

Poor quality wheatgrass and other greens often originate from China or from dehydrators in the United States that are used most of the year for pesticide-based alfalfa for confined animals being fattened for the industrialized meat industry.

Pines is 100% organic. We do not produce feed for the meat industry. All Pines products are packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen from each bottle.

This safeguard protects our high quality greens from oxidation until you open the bottle. The tight fitting metal caps helps keep the product fresh between uses.

Plastic tubs and paper packets are inappropriate packaging that cause rapid oxidation, making the contents a very poor value.

A high-end product sold to local grocers for juicing.

This photo shows the advancing front of cheatgrass moving north from the picnic table area in Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. The cheatgrass looks like a wave or an advancing army as it fills the spaces between the bunches of crested wheatgrass.

As shown in the previous photo, the area behind the camera has become dominated by cheatgrass. This leading edge will presumably give off seeds that will significantly expand the cheatgrass area next year.

The strategies cheatgrass uses to dominate an area include:

1. It grows earlier in the spring than other grasses and takes the nutrients and water in the soil--thus depriving other plants of the conditions for growth.

2. It promotes wildfire and more readily adapts to the conditions after a fire than do other grasses--thus making fire an advantage.

3. It forms dense matts with an average of 600 plants per square foot--thus leaving no room for other plants or for ecological diversity (which is the opposite strategy of bunchgrass such as crested wheatgrass).

4. It releases a large number of seeds that are distributed by wind, water, and animals and readily grow in a variety of conditions. The seeds remain viable for about 5 years.

5. When cut or mowed in the spring, cheatgrass adapts by going to seed at the new height, even if it is only an inch or two.

This is one of a series of photos with pictures and information about cheatgrass.

PINES Nutrition carries the best nutritional supplements, utilizing a friendly, knowledgeable staff. PINES International is the first company to introduce wheatgrass in 1976.

Thank you, PINES Nutrition, for posting this picture of #PinesWheatGrass on Facebook (pinesnutrition1) and Instagram (@pinesnutrition), and thanks for your comments:

"In Stock Now!

From The Wheat Grass People, PINES Wheat Grass Powder is a convenient, surprisingly economical way to make sure you eat green vegetables every day! Mixed with a glass of juice or a smoothie in the morning, and sprinkled on pizza or pasta in the evening."

You will find dozens of recipe ideas at wheatgrass.com. Each teaspoon serving of PINES is equal in nutrition of a large #spinach or #kale salad. Sometimes it is difficult to achieve three or more servings of vegetables per day to protect our health. Pines #greensuperfoods make it easy and economical (less than 1/3 the cost of other #vegetables and less than 1/10th the cost of green juice drinks.)

Pines follows standards established in 1937 by scientists. Besides following their growing and harvesting standards, we also follow their packaging standards of using amber glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen. That prevents loss of nutrition that occurs with poor quality products in plastic tubs or packets. The tight-fitting caps also keep the product fresh between uses.

Pines is the only #vegan-friendly #Kansas #wheatgrass producer. Our facilities have never been a part of the meat industry. We are also the only producer that is 100% organic and not a 60-year-old, pesticide-based agribusiness with an "organic sideline."

Pines (wheatgrass.com) was the original #greensuperfood company. We introduced #wheatgrass to the natural foods market in 1976. During the past 40 years, thousands of people have increased their dark green, leafy #vegetables with #PinesWheatGrass, #MightyGreens, #GreenDuo and our other nutrient-dense sources of #vegetable nutrition.

Studies show 9 our of 10 people in modern society don't eat as many greens as those who have a lower incidence of many disease conditions.

All Pines products are packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps containing tight seals that allow us to remove the oxygen. This safeguard protects sensitive nutrients from the oxidation and loss of nutrients that occurs when green food products are packaged in plastic tubs or paper packets. After opening, the special caps allow the consumer to tightly seal the product between uses to keep it fresh and vibrant.

Nearly all Pines products consist of ingredients that we grow ourselves on our own #familyfarm. All products are certified #organic,#gmofree,#raw,#Kosher and #glutenfree

Their stores provide outstanding customer service and stock the largest selection of products in the Shreveport / Bossier City area, with a store in each city.

Sunshine was founded the same year as Pines International, the original #greensuperfood company, by Jean Bernheim. She brought a wealth of knowledge and determination to Shreveport after the first store opened in 1976. After 30 years of retail in the Shreveport/Bossier City area, Jean decided to retire, but she remains an invaluable resource for business and health advice.

Although they carry a full line of packaged products, Sunshine is also known for its beautiful produce and freshly made food that includes not only an outstanding salad bar, but also homemade soups, sandwiches and paninis, They also cater hot dishes such as their delicious spinach lasagna, black bean enchiladas and quiches.

Sunshine features high quality products like those from Pines International, the company that introduced #wheatgrass to the natural food consciousness as a way to include more #vegetable #nutrition in diets. Studies show most people do not consume enough of the health protection of dark green vegetables.. Pines offers convenient and economical alternatives.

After nearly 40 years of #organic farming, Pines is the only company that follows the standards established in 1937 by Charles Schnabel, called "the father of wheatgrass" by Steve Meyerowitz in his popular book, "Wheatgrass: Nature's Finest Medicine.". Pines still cultivates many fields used by Dr. Schnabel and operates his laboratory north of Lawrence, Kansas. Pines also follows his standard of packaging #CerealGrass and #alfalfa in glass bottles with special metal caps so we can remove the oxygen to prevent devitalization and loss of color that occurs with #plastic tubs and paper packets.

One of these new stores is at 5340 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake, featured in this picture.

Fresh Thyme now is open in 8 Illinois locations, 7 in Indiana, 4 in Michigan, 1 in Minnesota, 6 in Ohio and 2 to open next month in Missouri. Fresh Thyme is new kind of natural food grocery that is taking over the Midwest and is on the move with large beautiful stores.

Fresh Thyme believes you shouldn’t have to give away the farm to feed your body nutritious food. They are on a mission to improve the way we eat by offering fresh and healthy food at amazing values - all in a vibrant and fun shopping environment, with smiling friendly faces. Their stores don’t follow traditional grocery store design, nor do they have tall aisles or glitzy fixtures. In fact, the stores are so simple and so easy to navigate that they don’t number their aisles or hand out store maps. They believe shopping for fresh and healthy food should be easy and enjoyable.

At all Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets you will find a full range of Pines' ‪green superfoods‬ in amber glass bottles with special metal caps that allow Pines to remove the oxygen for the freshest bright green products. That's not possible for greens packaged in plastic tubs and packets.

Pines is the only Kansas ‪‎wholefood‬ ‪‎wheatgrass‬ and ‪‎alfalfa‬ producer that is ‪#vegan‬-friendly and 100% ‪#‎organic‬. Unlike the other Kansas producer, Pines has never supported and still does not support the meat industry. We do not share their long history of providing pesticide-based alfalfa for confined factory-farm animals. In fact our facilities utilize modern, stainless steel equipment built exclusively for certified #organic, ‪GMO Free‬ human food. Organic agriculture is our passion, not an "organic sideline" for a chemically-based agribusiness.
