Slender wheatgrass (aka Elymus trachycaulus) is common along the ridge of the Bridger Range on steep west and east facing slopes. The Bridger Ridge is mostly calcareous. This site is at the headwaters of Middle Cottonwood Creek just below Saddle Peak in a subalpine dry meadow.
Agropyron latiglume and Elymus violaceus (Hornem.) Böcher ex J. Feilberg refer to high elevation forms on calcareous substrates that have mostly 3-veined glumes with asymmetric margins and lemmas with 0.5-3 mm long awns. Lower elevation forms have glumes with three or more veins, symmetric margins, and awns absent or up to 40 mm long. Such morphologies and altitudes, as seen in the above photo of +3-veined symmetric and asymmetric glumes from a population at subalpine elevations, do not covary among Montana or western North American specimens.

The summer following a fire, Elymus cinereus along with Elymus elymoids, Agropyron dasystachyum, and Poa secunda (and not necessarily Bromus tectorum) respond very well. Here a coyote seems to want to hang out around the taller bunches of Elymus cinereus. [rd28 between pbf and mfc.]
