Montana wheatgrass is of hybrid origins. From Agropyron spicatum, bluebunch wheatgrass, Montana wheatgrass gets its curved lemma awns and somewhat bunchgrass habit. From Agropyron dasystachyum, thickspike wheatgrass, Montana wheatgrass gets its short inflorescence internodes and rhizomatous growth habit. This population by the Diamond Headframe co-exists with thickspike wheatgrass and bluebunch wheatgrass is growing in the vicinity surrounding the mine reclamation area. The hybrid perhaps newly evolved at this site.
