Although the original equipment was long ago replaced, Pines still operates one of the same laboratories used by Dr. Charles Schnabel and Dr. George Kohler in their pioneering research on wheat grass and other cereal grasses between 1925 and 1950. This foundational research proved that wheatgrass, when grown in Northeastern Kansas and harvested during a specific short period called the jointing stage, is an extremely concentrated source of green food nutrients.
When wheatgrass is planted and grown through the cold Kansas winter as was done in the research on wheatgrass, it is very dark green compared to tray wheatgrass grown in warm conditions. Because of having months in cold weather to convert sunlight into very concentrated nutrients, the simple sugars that taste so terrible in tray wheatgrass have been converted into enzymes and other nutrients. As a result the flavor of true wheatgrass is wonderful, and the nutritional value is extremely high. The often quoted statistic about wheatgrass being equal to pounds of vegetables is true, but the data were collected using true wheatgrass, not tray wheatgrass.
Antennaria stenophylla, narrowleaf pussytoes, is common in the sagebrush steppe near Waterville, Douglas County, Washington, where native perennial herbs in general are diverse in this area. The narrow and relatively long leaves, loose mat-forming habit, and black involucral bracts (phyllaries) are distinctive of this species.

Kiff and I finally planted some grass for the cats. We had just been buying it at the pet store. The petstore grass never lasted very long. We hope that our lush, organically grown (from organic seeds) grass will grow and grow and grow. We also hope that the catnip that we planted will grow equally well because we would like to plant some on top of Clover, who is (still dead) in our freezer. We thought catnip would be an appropriate thing to plant on top of a kitty grave. Clover was Moos mother.
