The root system on the wheatgrass retains the shape of the sprouting tray. Pretty good root growth for around two weeks, hey?

Wyoming sagebrush-Bluebunch wheatgrass (Artemisia tridentata wyomingensis-Pseudoroegeneria spicata) plant community. This is one of the highest quality examples of this plant community in Washington and as such was protected by the Washington Department of Natural Resources as the Two Steppe Natural Area Preserve.

The outer seal shrinks around the cap in such a way that it is impossible to open the bottle without breaking the seal. This ensures your bottle has not been opened since it was packaged at Pines. You will not find a paper seal inside the bottle. Instead, you will see a specially designed gasket around the inside of the cap. That gasket with a glass bottle is the only way an oxygen-free atmosphere can be sealed inside a bottle. If a product is not packed in a glass bottle with this kind of seal in a metal, it does not contain an oxygen-free atmosphere.

Native plant cover is close to 100% in and around Middle Butte. Most of the same plants that dominate the area of Middle Butte also dominate the vegetation around East Butte, excepting of course juniper and big sagebrush.

Close-up of the long-awned form of slender wheatgrass (lemma anws 10-40 mm long) having spikelets with a somewhat secund arrangement. This native bunchgrass is common along the JMT at montane and subalpine zones especially along the trail where disturbance is more frequent.

Note the smaller glumes with a short acute tip and hairy lemmas of thickspike wheatgrass.

Spikelets are 16–35 mm long and 4–10-flowered. Glumes subequal. Lemmas 6.9–12.5 mm long, glabrous or scabrous, mucronate, muticous or with an awn remaining straight when dry; lowest lemma muticous , mucronate or with an awn 0–3 mm long, remaining lemmas with awn 0–11.5 mm long.

Noxious weed Euphorbia myrsinites surrounds probably and grows over other vegetation. The tall grass in the middle is also an exotic, Thinopyrum ponticum or Tall wheatgrass (syn. Elymus elongatus,Agopryon elongatum and others). Smaller green grass to far left is Festuca saximontana that is locally native but is probably not a local genotype. So this has become a living biological dumping ground.

I have been growing wheat grass and they make the most beautiful spring displays. I used copper wire to hold the photo up. Just create a spiral on one end and slip the photo in. I have a bunch of these all over the house ... such joy.

happy spring day to you

After the bottles go through the cap tightener, the oxygen-free environment is sealed inside the bottle so that the wheatgrass will remain as fresh. By keeping the wheatgrass in freezing temperatures until ready for bottling and by using nitrogen packing, the product you receive is as fresh as the day it was harvested. You can help to keep your Pines Wheat Grass fresh after you open the bottle by keeping it in the refrigerator, but most people use a bottle within a month. As long as you tighten the special lid after every use, no significant loss of nutrients will occur without refrigeration. The major reason for nitrogen protection is the long periods that a product can spend in a warehouse or on a store shelf before you receive it. If a product sits in a plastic bottle for a months without protection, nutrient loss can be quite significant.

@stephanieannbarber took me for breakfast and then we juiced. My 1200 calorie breakfast followed by a shot of wheatgrass and some beat juice concoction from community (that tasted like borscht)

Western wheatgrass intermingles with thickspike wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum) along the sides of the crop fields. Western wheatgrass tends to be glaucous (bluegree) whereas thickspike wheatgrass tends to be more bright green. This local difference is not absolute even at this site.

I took this picture of a small clump of grass in the setting sun this weekend. I loved the golden colors of it's surroundings.

In Montana, the expected roadside grasses are usually exotics such as smooth brome (Bromus inermis) and crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum). Somehow, this roadside section between Wilsall and Ringling became dominated by the native thickspike wheatgrass.Note the short multi-veined glumes.

The sagebrush steppe in this region between Worland and Thermopolis is often dominated by Bromus tectorum, especially where heavily disturbed and overgrazed. An abundance of Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass) appears to preclude Bromus tectorum, as in this area.

Annual wheatgrass (Eremopyrum triticeum), along with Russian wildrye (Elymus junceus), alyssum, cheatgrass, kochia, Russian thistle, and greasewood, dominate the flats near the North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. This area was dominated by crested wheatgrass 30 years ago and efforts to replace that introduced bunchgrass resulted in a diversity of introduced plant species. Greasewood, Sarcobatus vermiculatus, has become abundant since this photo was taken.

Annual false wheatgrass is distinguished by its terminal spike that disperses as a burr. The glume bases of each spikelet in the burr-head become inflated and hardened.

Just to show how blue it is compared to other grasses (whereas blue grama is really very green, so go figure)
