Although seldom encountered in the natural vegetation of this region, western wheatgrass was locally common along roadsides, indicating its abundance in this region was due to roadside plantings rather than naturally occurring. For example, western wheatgrass was not found in the sagebrush steppe and other grassy vegetation in the Nine Mile Prairie area. The long glumes (as long or longer than adjacent lemma) with narrowly attenuating sharp tips, which give the entire spike a very rigid feel, are diagnostic of western wheatgrass and very different from the shorter less rigid glumes of thickspike wheatgrass.

Foxtail wheatgrass (Agrositanion saxicola, Pseudelymus saxicola), a native perennial bunchgrass in the sagebrush steppe north of Jarbidge Nevada along the Jarbidge River drainage, and just north of the ID/NV border in Twin Falls County, Idaho, represents a hybrid between Elymus elymoides (squirreltail) and Agropyron spicatum (bluebunch wheatgrass). It is mostly like bluebunch in its tall stature, leafy stems (few if any basal leaves), and non-shattering spikes with long inflorescence internodes. The long curved awns coming from both glumes and lemmas are more like those of squirreltail.

Streambank wheatgrass can form a lawn with its dense spreading stems usually bearing very slender blue green leaf blades mostly from near the stem base. This grass is essentially thickspike wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum) but with a predilection to wetter more clayey settings and forming more dense population. Actually, thickspike wheatgrass does the same.

We used to grow wheat grass each year leading up to Easter -- just because it's pretty and springy -- and it seemed pretty simple. But now that I'm hoping to juice it, I'm afraid it will flop.

The most common rhizomatous wheatgrass in the northern range of Yellowstone National Park, thickspike wheatgrass abounds in the mountain big sagebrush steppe whereas western wheatgrass, Agropyron smithii, is seldom if at all encountered. The rhizomatous growth habit, hair lemmas, and glumes generally shorter than the lemmas are traits distinctive of thickspike wheatgrass.

All Pines #greensuperfoods are packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen. That safeguard prevent the loss of nutrition that occurs with packets and plastic containers. Even after opening, the metal caps allow the consumer to seal the bottle tightly between use to maintain freshness.

Pines was the original green #superfood company with our introduction of #PinesWheatGrass more than 40 years ago. Even though we provide the best quality, a serving of any Pines' costs less than half as much as supermarket produce grown with pesticides.

All Pines' products are #certifiedorganic, #glutenfree, #Kosher, #NonGMOProject verified and #vegan. In fact, PInes is the only #wheatgrasspowder produced in Kansas that doesn't come from facilities built and used for the pesticide-based, confined-animal, industrialized meat industry. That means we are also the only Kansas green #vegetable powder grower that is 100% organic. We have been leaders in the organic food movement for more than 40 years. Our website is wheatgrass.com.

Agropyron dasystachyum is somewhat common along the shallow sandy margins of the Saint Anthony sand dunes, Fremont County, Idaho. The broad multi-veined glumes and moderately hairy lemmas are distinctive of thickspike wheatgrass. The wheatgrass auricles are somewhat conspicuous in this species.

Grace and I have a weird obsession with Wheat Grass ever since Robex Juice. But we don't drink it.

Nowadays, instead of growing wheatgrass naturally, some people plant the seeds 300 times closer than normal and grow the plants indoors in trays at temperatures four times higher than normal. The juice is extracted for a "#WheatgrassShot." The results of such crowded conditions and far-too-rapid growth are spindly leaves in the picture that are quite pale by comparison to the real wheatgrass below it. It also causes the roots to tangle in the bottom of the tray. As a result of this contamination, unnatural wheatgrass juice has high levels of mold and bacteria.

Real wheatgrass grows slowly outdoors in cold weather. The roots grow more than a foot deep in rich glacial soil. More than 80 years of testimonials and a long history of extensive research using whole food wheatgrass powder from plants grown naturally shows that powder from real #wheatgrass is very beneficial. The medical history was with naturally-grown, whole food wheatgrass powder and tablets, not with juice from plants grown unnaturally in a tray.

The popularity of "wheatgrass shots" is on a steady decline as a result of increased recognition of prebiotics. To be #prebiotic, vegetables must still contain their natural fiber. Prebiotic food supports the growth of probiotic bacteria. Without fiber, #probiotic bacteria do not have the environment they need. Probiotic bacteria are the "friendly bacteria" that are important for proper digestion and assimilation.

The importance of consuming prebiotic foods has led to popularity of whole food #smoothies rather than extracted #juice. That's why it makes sense to increase #nutrition and #fiber in smoothies by adding a scoop of nutrient-dense, #wholefood #greensuperfood powder from Pines to your blender.

Even in sagebrush steppe dominated by Artemisia tripartita, which is more resilient to disturbance including fire, cheatgrass is absent, rare, or highly localized to roadsides or to animal disturbances.

After the facility is cleaned and made ready, Pines uses special machines to harvest the wheatgrass. The freshly harvested leaves never touch the ground. They are kept in a special bin on board the harvesting machine.
