This annual species is common on sandy and gravelly soils. The terminal spike is just emerging through the leaf sheath. These bunchgrasses in this population all stand less than 6 inches (15 cm) tall. The inflorescence or terminal spike becomes a solid burr-like structure at maturity. This site lies in Yellowstone National Park, along the old highway between Gardiner and Mammoth, Park County, Montana.

Basin wildrye (center foreground with light brown spikes poking up against the backdrop of the aspens) is common in open sagebrush settings typically where seep water might be available.

Missouri milkvetch growing in open arid rangeland that was probably once Wyoming big sagebrush steppe but that is now mostly dominated by crested wheatgrass. This site occurs on northern prairie vegetation just southwest of Havre. This area reestablishing native vegetation from an old crested wheatgrass planting.

Although in an upland setting where Idaho fescue is common, Agropyron spicatum also occurs but more so on the drier exposures.

wheatgrass, fresh flowers from my garden, and a few of my favourite objects

Annual wheatgrass (Eremopyrum triticeum), along with Russian wildrye (Elymus junceus), alyssum, cheatgrass, kochia, Russian thistle, and greasewood, dominate the flats near the North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. This area was dominated by crested wheatgrass 30 years ago and efforts to replace that introduced bunchgrass resulted in a diversity of introduced plant species. Greasewood, Sarcobatus vermiculatus, has become abundant since this photo was taken.

Annual false wheatgrass is distinguished by its terminal spike that disperses as a burr. The glume bases of each spikelet in the burr-head become inflated and hardened.

Much of the northern range in Yellowstone National Park shows signs of overgrazing, such as in this area where a lot of disturbed bare soil is exposed. One of the few grasses, if not the only grass, in such an area is thickspike wheatgrass, which underscores its coarseness and relative unpalatability. The one flowering stem and the scattered blue green grass leaves are those of thickspike wheatgrass.

Wheatgrass is low in calories and has no fat.

Bluebunch wheatgrass growing during August 2021 or the year after the September 2020 fire at the south end of the Bridger Range, Gallatin County, Montana. The few flowering spikes had already dispersed mature florets by late August. The loosely bunched growth habit and all leaf blades born from the stem are diagnostic of bluebunch wheatgrass. Bluebunch wheatgrass is abundant in the open understory of the dry limestone slopes from the College M up to the lookout along the trail to Baldy Mountain.

Western wheatgrass is common in good condition sagebrush steppe but becomes even more common where a history of disturbance has been pronounced or prolonged, as in this patch (possibly herbicide over-application?) Japanese brome and cheatgrass were confined in this patch and one of the cheatgrass individuals at the front and center was sampled (C) as part of an ecological study.
