The growth habit of slender wheatgrass includes tall (upwards of a meter) and slender bunches or shorter and more densely bunched, the latter typically of open exposed settings.
Native plant cover is close to 100% in and around Middle Butte. Most of the same plants that dominate the area of Middle Butte also dominate the vegetation around East Butte, excepting of course juniper and big sagebrush.
Center green parcel in its third year of monoculture conversion from crested wheatgrass monoculture pasture. Foreground is still a crested wheatgrass monoculture. Sterling Ballbach chose to participate in the North Stillwater County Pasture Monoculture Diversification Targeted Implementation Plan, developed by the NRCS field office in Columbus based on local priorities. The purpose of the TIP is to renovate the monoculture pastures to a diverse mix of plants that allows for different season of use on these pastures. This option facilitates a grazing plan with more management options that helps to improve the health of native rangeland units. Ballbach property, Stillwater County, MT. July 2021
Elymus elymoides is an abundant native perennial bunchgrass in the sagebrush steppe of the Idaho National Laboratory. The purplish bottlebrush-like inflorescences are characteristic of this species during the middle summer. This site lies in the Wyoming big sagebrush steppe of the Idaho National Laboratory, east of Lincoln Blvd off Shell Road, Butte County, Idaho.
Elymus elymoides is common in open shrub-grass dominated settings in the mountains particularly on well drained soils on south and west facing slopes.

Elliot looks paranoid that I'm going to take his wheatgrass away. Little does he know, I'm going to order 5 lbs. of seeds online, so there will be plenty more where that came from!
Spikelets are not/little overlapping, have their sides against the stem and have many awned florets. Awns are
straight when young and curved when mature.
The brome-like spikelets arranged on wheatgrass-like inflorescences are distinctive of this genus. [Photo of M. Schmidt collections.]
The two pair of glumes at each node each delimit one spikelet. The bases of the glumes become hardened, bony in color and texture, and curve a bit outward at maturity.
Wyoming big sagebrush steppe in the Taos region includes an understory that is commonly dominated by Agropyron cristatum, crested wheatgrass. Like in much of the sagebrush steppe to the north, crested wheatgrass was likely intentionally sown. Cheatgrass is absent from such sagebrush steppe yet abundant roadside.
