...from the ground up.
I wanted the silhouette and sky behind view of these - which meant lying on the ground and shooting up; just another day in the pursuit of photos. :)
Flowerheads are spikes to 25 cm long. Spikelets
are not/little overlapping, have their sides against
the stem and have many awned florets. Awns are 6-60 mm long, straight when young and curved when mature.
The large "oatgrass" glumes (enfolding or mostly so all the florets inside a single spikelet) are diagnostic of slender wheatgrass.
Agropyron albicans, Montana wheatgrass, has been long-persistent on the Burke Park ridge in east Bozeman, where its two progenitor species are common, Agropyron spicatum (bluebunch wheatgrass) and Agropyron dasystachyum (thickspike wheatgrass). Agropyron albicans has the very loosely bunched rhizomatous habit, persistent florets and glume-length internodes of Agropyron dasystachyum but the long curved lemma awns and relatively glabrous lemmas of Agropyron spicatum.
Bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata ssp. spicata syn. Agropyron spicatum), Grass family (Poaceae).

Although inhabiting a very broad elevational gradient, slender wheatgrass is ecologically very confined to disturbed settings.
Producer Courtney Herzog and NRCS State Argonomist Susan Tallman discuss perennial planting mix seeded during the third year of monoculture conversion project. This location was previously monoculture crested wheatgrass pasture. Courtney Herzog chose to participate in the North Stillwater County Pasture Monoculture Diversification Targeted Implementation Plan, developed by the NRCS field office in Columbus based on local priorities. The purpose of the TIP is to renovate the monoculture pastures to a diverse mix of plants that allows for different season of use on these pastures. This option facilitates a grazing plan with more management options that helps to improve the health of native rangeland units. Herzog Farm, Stillwater County, MT. July 2021

first attempt at wheatgrass- a little lopsided and not particularly dense yet, but hopefully wheatgrass shots are in my near future!

This isn't meant to be artistic. I was just curious about the foam that appears on top of wheatgrass juice just after it is poured. The cup size (inset) is an espresso shot, small. It's amazing how small each bubble is in the froth.
This annual species is common on sandy and gravelly soils. The terminal spike is just emerging through the leaf sheath. These bunchgrasses in this population all stand less than 6 inches (15 cm) tall. The inflorescence or terminal spike becomes a solid burr-like structure at maturity. This site lies in Yellowstone National Park, along the old highway between Gardiner and Mammoth, Park County, Montana.

The growth habit of slender wheatgrass includes tall (upwards of a meter) and slender bunches or shorter and more densely bunched, the latter typically of open exposed settings.

Elymus elymoides is an abundant native perennial bunchgrass in the sagebrush steppe of the Idaho National Laboratory. The purplish bottlebrush-like inflorescences are characteristic of this species during the middle summer. This site lies in the Wyoming big sagebrush steppe of the Idaho National Laboratory, east of Lincoln Blvd off Shell Road, Butte County, Idaho.
Elymus elymoides is common in open shrub-grass dominated settings in the mountains particularly on well drained soils on south and west facing slopes.
the wheatgrass finally took off! i had a great day, i think i made a good impression to the big bosses and my store made 2xs more money than it had to, so i didn't have to cut hours at all!
