Agropyron intermedium, which includes the bluegreen grass in this photo, is common along roads in Grand Teton National Park and is absent from adjacent high-native-plant-cover sagebrush steppe. The exotic Rumex acetosella (common sheep sorrel), with the reddish inflorescences, is common along roads in this area but not in high-native-cover sagebrush steppe.

Bluebunch wheatgrass is typically the tallest and most loosely bunched of the abundant bunchgrasses in steppe vegetation of Montana (e.g., compared to prairie junegrass and Idaho fescue). The leaf blades arise from the stem and not from ground level, in contrast to such grasses as Idaho fescue and prairie junegrass.
Here's another great recipe from CK Hall on Instagram @defininghealth. She says this:

Why trust a buyer, who is looking for the cheapest ingredients possible, to determine the ingredients is in your superfood? Left to right, Stipa comata var. comata (needle and thread), Agropyron spicatum (bluebunch wheatgrass), Andropogon scoparius (little bluestem), Agropyron dasystachyum (thickspike wheatgrass), Koeleria macrantha (prairie junegrass), and Calamovilfa longifolia (prairie sandreed). These grasses co-dominate the open arid grasslands in the open understory of the Chalk Buttes, rangeland in good condition in terms of high native plant diversity and low exotic plant cover.
Spikes of Agropyron repens protrude through the inflorescences of Hordeum jubatum. The lemmas awns and awn-like glumes render a feathery or silken appearance to the flowering head. This site lies at the base of Peets Hill, Burke Park, Bozeman, Montana.
Remnant sagebrush amid cropped and converted agricultural lands. Where sagebrush occurs, the intervening vegetation is mostly a mix of Achillea millefolium (yarrow), Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass), Agropyron dasystachyum (thickspike wheatgrass), Bromus japonicus (Japanese brome), and Chrysothamnus nauseosus (rubber rabbitbrush).
Introduced, warm-season, perennial, tussock-forming grass to 130 cm tall. Flowerheads are spikes to 30 cm long and which break up at maturity. Flowers in summer. A native of Europe and western Asia, it is found scattered in areas of low to moderate salinity; sometimes sown, but also increasingly naturalised. More common in southern areas. Has low to moderate waterlogging tolerance, but is not tolerant of waterlogging over spring and into summer. Used to rehabilitate saline sites, but is becoming an increasingly widespread weed especially in wetlands and along streams. Very productive when subsoil moisture is available or there is good summer rainfall. Provides high quality feed when vegetative and leafy, but is of poor quality when rank and flowering. Good grazing management is critical to maintain feed quality and palatability; it responds to hard grazing and added nitrogen.
The annual bunched habit is characteristic of cultivated grasses. This site lies along Kagy Blvd just east of Highland Blvd, Bozeman, Montana.
Intermediate wheatgrass can form diffuse rhizomatous stands or the stems can be bunched with not many rhizomes. This supposedly distinguished Agropyron intermedium from Agropyron elongatum, but the covariation of such growth habit and other diagnostic traits is not evident. The ends of the spectrum of this growth habit are continuous. This site lies along the Highland Glen trail system near East Kagy Blvd, Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana.
after the ID new student photo scavenger hunt, the winning team shared their prize of a gift certificate to Jamba Juice by buying a double shot of wheat grass for every participant in the event.
Actually, true wheatgrass and tray wheatgrass are not in competition. Tray wheatgrass has its place. Although tray wheat grass is grown under unnatural conditions, it still provides an amazing amount of nutrition.
The belief that there is no difference between the indoor tray wheatgrass and true wheatgrass that is grown through the winter outdoors is just one of many myths about wheatgrass. To learn more, please go here:

Pines International still grows its wheatgrass in the same northeast Kansas soils and in the same way as the research. Pines Wheat Grass grows in that nutrient-rich, certified-organic, glacial soil for nearly 200 days. The temperatures are usually below freezing at night and sometimes above freezing during the day. The result is a very dark green vegetable with very concentrated levels of chlorophyll, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Yet, it is still no taller than wheatgrass grown in a warm temperatures for about a week.

At the south end of the Smoky Mountains as the Big Wood River emerges into the Snake River Plains, the sagebrush steppe is sporadically colonized by Bromus tectorum, which is not the case at this site where Agropyron cristatum and Poa secunda predominate.
About once a week I drink a shot of wheatgrass juice. Despite what it looks like it actually tastes pretty good. I snapped this macro at one of my favorite lunch haunts yesterday (The Other Side Cafe).
The perennial bunched habit of Agropyron cristatum is evident as summer progresses and surrounding forb and other grass species are grazed and browsed leaving the silica-rich unpalatable created wheatgrass standing tall. This site lies along the ridgeline at the north end of Burke Park, Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana.
slender wheatgrass, Elymus trachycaulus var. trachycaulus, White Mountains, elevation 3560 m (11685 ft)
Calamagrostis montanensis has long ligules and no evidence of a wheatgrass auricle. Thus, this species can't be confused with the vegetatively similar Agropyron dasystachyum (thickspike wheatgrass) and Ag. smithii (western wheatgrass).
Jointed goatgrass has a distinctive cylindrical inflorescence where the internode and the adjacent spikelet shatter (disarticulate) as a unit. This site lies along the trail on the northwest side of Table Rock, Boise foothills, Ada County, Idaho.
This rhizomatous to loosely bunched species is possibly a hybid between thickspike wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum) and bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum). The loosely bunched habit and awned lemmas are from bluebunch wheatgrass and the rhizomatous habit and spike with overlapping spikelets come from thickspike.
Christine came by our booth to wish us a Happy 40th Anniversary and to praise Pines' Green Superfoods as her favorite.
Christine is a lecturer and consultant on matters of health. She recognizes that organic wheatgrass from Pines is grown outdoors in cold weather as nature intends and is harvested at the once-a-year time when scientists discovered the highest nutritional level.
Christine also appreciates our commitment to the environment by our increasing wildlife habitat, our conversion of land to organic, our refusal to use plastic bottles and our refusal to further deplete and pollute the Ogallala Aquifer.
Pines is the only Kansas producer of wheatgrass and alfalfa whose facilities have never been used by the animal feeds industry and the only producer to depend on natural rainfall rather than irrigation using water from the nearly-depleted Aquifer.
Pines is also the only green superfood to use glass bottles with special metal caps so that the oxygen can be removed to prevent nutrient loss through oxidation. The same tight seals in the caps also allow the consumer to keep the product fresh after opening.
Christine is known for her education programs. She posts under the heading, "Living Clean with Christine." Christine's mission is to serve as a resource for all things toxin free and chemical free. As a speaker and consultant in the Natural Products marketplace, her tips, ideas, recipes and posts regarding health issues are an inspiration on how to achieve overall health and wellness through clean living.
This picture was posted on her Twitter account and shows Christine with co-founder Ron Seibold and with Skyler Malone, who is the son of co-founder, Steve Malone.

The ligules and auricles are similar to those of wheat although barley tends to produce larger and more conspicuous auricles.
From the Columbia Pleateau (Owyhee Mountains) northward into Marsing, Idaho, cheatgrass (and medusahead) abundance becomes more common seemingly as a function of lower elevation rather than degree and nature of disturbance. This upland area harbors a small patch of high native cover sagebrush steppe, a rarity in the region of the lower Snake River Plains.
Lets see,
3 stalks celery
a small bunch of cilantro
1 apple
kale
spinach
3 carrots
1 lime
1 packet of wheatgrass powder.
oh my!!! This was the best juice I've ever made!!!
In a region involving much of northwestern Nevada and southwestern Idaho, post-fire sagebrush steppe doesn't involve recolonization by shrubs such as Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus but by annual exotics and cheatgrass is only one of the many annual exotic colonizers. In this scene, Eremopyrum triticeum, Kochia scoparia, Salsola kali and Sisymbrium altissimum are also abundant.
Agropyron intermedium, which includes the bluegreen grass in this photo, is common along roads in Grand Teton National Park and is absent from adjacent high-native-plant-cover sagebrush steppe. Both the glabrous and hairy ("pubescent wheatgrass") coexist in this area. Note the diagnostic cilate hairs lining the margin of the leaf sheath.
Wheatgrass Juicers are especially designed because it (wheatgrass) can be extremely fibrous and difficult to break down. Wheatgrass has been found to be very beneficial to ones health, and can be grown indoors in your own home! Find a great selection and awesome deals of Wheatgrass juicers at 877MyJuicer !
The ligules and auricles are similar to those of wheat although barley tends to produce larger and more conspicuous auricles.
The glumes with curved bases that are also boney both in texture and coloration are diagnostic of Elymus virginicus (and E. curvatus).
This form called beardless wheatgrass, which is identical to bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum spicatum) except for lacking lemma awns, is commonly used to revegetate road cuts and post-burn settings in the open arid regions of this region of western North America. Note that the glumes are much shorter than then internodes.
Prairie dog towns harbor many native colonizing plant species but the consistently most predominant is Agropyron dasystachyum, which predominates also in the adjacent undisturbed sagebrush steppe.
This was a fun day! Natalie, Jessica, and I went up to Irvine Park (again) but this time, Nat pointed out some awesome tall wheat-like grass that we could frolic in.
Only sucky part was that Jessica and I got sick when got home and were down for two days after. No school on Monday though!
The mountain big sagebrush steppe in this area can sometimes be very short statured and expansive (similar to wyoming big sagebrush steppe). Although Bromus tectorum can be abundant along the road, this annual exotic rarely if ever is found out in the sagebrush steppe of this area.

Medusahead forms extensive stands that form light straw-colored patches especially during the late summer and fall. The green heads are those of Taeniatherum. The darker more slender heads are those of Poa bulbosa.
In the sagebrush steppe in and around Challis Idaho, Bromus tectorum is confined to south and southwest facing slopes or along road- and stream-sides. On flat topography and regardless of the degree of physical disturbance, the sagebrush steppe in this area is essentially devoid of cheatgrass.
