Regardless of the degree of disturbance, Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) is rare to non-existent in this region of sagebrush steppe. This country is very well grazed, as indicated by all of the Gardner's saltbrush, normally a shrub, which attains a height of merely ground level in this area.

The rhizomatous Intermediate wheatgrass dominates the roadside and to some degree the adjacent sagebrush steppe in an area where it seems Bromus tectorum should be more common than it is. Agropyron cristatum, crested wheatgrass (with the shorter squater terminal spikes), codominates in this area. A small population of rubber rabbit brush (Ericameria nauseosa var. nauseosa) sits at the center of this view and is expected in rangeland with indications of a long history of disturbance.

Wheatgrass grown by me

At the middle elevations along the Trail Creek Road, the Wyoming big sagebrush steppe is dominated by Agropyron spicatum and secondarily by Poa secunda as one moves away from the Big Lost River Valley. Bromus tectorum is absent from this vegetation even though present along the roadsides. Mount Borah sits cloud-covered in the background.

Intermediate wheatgrass is the tallest grass alongside the trail. Agropyron cristatum, crested wheatgrass, is the common lighter-green short-statured grass in this photo. This inflorescence comes from intermediate wheatgrass growing along the ridgeline at the north end of Burke Park, Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana.

Common wheat (green colored) can sometimes be weedy in a cultivated field of two-row barley (straw colored).

The glumes of Agropyron smithii can have one or a few veins (ribs) at the base, but in either case the long-tapering tip, which is often curved, renders the glume as long as or longer than the adjacent lemma. Also, the lemmas tend to be glabrous in A. smithii, in contrast to the generally hairy lemmas of A. dasystachyum. These inflorescences came from western wheatgrass growing along the trail at the north end of Burke Park, Bozeman, Montana.

Her website, Tabby's Pantry, is loaded with great product reviews, recipes, parenting tips, exercise tips, give-a-ways, and contests such as her current one to win a box of 25 natural products, including Pines Mighty Greens, an economical and convenient way to add more #plantbasedprotein and #greensuperfood nutrition to your diet.

#GreenSmoothies become even greener and not-so-green #smoothies taste and look even fresher and cleaner with a spoonful of #MightyGreens. You can also mix Mighty Greens with water. It tastes good. Unlike other green #superfood blends, Mighty Greens is not a "kitchen sink plastic tub" mixture of everything under the sun (but with not very much of anything!) Instead, Mighty Greens contains whole food #wheatgrass, #alfalfa and #hemp protein. Except for the stevia, that 's it!

The main products are grown on our own certified #organic farms. Instead of dozens of not-so-nutritious greens from dozens of different sources, we grow nature's most nutrient-dense green #superfoods and do not add any fillers and outsourced ingredients from far flung suppliers. Pines produced the original green superfood nearly 40 years ago, decades before #petrochemical plastic tub "greens.". Our reputation is based on quality, not cutting corners.

Here's what Tabby has to say about Pines Mighty Greens: "This is a fantastic blend you can drink every day. It is a mix of Wheatgrass, Alfalfa and hemp protein powder. Just add 1 level tablespoon to 8oz of water or juice and drink. As green mixes go this one did not taste too bad. It was easy to mix and was not gritty at all."

Already nearly 2,000 people have signed up for Tabby's contest. There are many ways to increase your chances of winning. Find out how at bit.ly/1jPQvkP

CK teaches sourcing individual ingredients rather than using complex blends This is especially important for green food ingredients, which can be blended with darkly colored ingredients to hide poor color and quality.

When you select single ingredients rather than blends, you can see, smell, touch and taste each individual ingredient to check for quality.

All Pines products are packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps containing tight seals that allow us to remove the oxygen.

This safeguard protects sensitive nutrients from the oxidation and nutrient loss that occurs when green food products are packaged in plastic tubs or paper packets. After opening, the special caps seal the product between uses to keep it fresh and vibrant.

Nearly all Pines products consist of ingredients that we grow ourselves. All products are certified #organic, #gmofree, #vegan, #raw, #Kosher and #glutenfree.

Once we get further from the water, these grasslands are taking over the open spaces. I don't know if these are native or introduced.

Best guess so far is Thinopyrum ponticum (Rush Wheatgrass, Tall Wheatgrass).

From www.saltlandgenie.org.au: "Tall wheatgrass is one of those species that has changed its Latin name a number of times. It has been variously referred to as Agropyron elongatum, Thinopyrum elongatum, Elytrigia pontica, Elytrigia elongata and (most recently) as Thinopyrum ponticum."

Native to Europe and Africa, introduced and naturalized here. Sometimes used in revegetation efforts.

This is short segment of the first part of an interview between Ron Seibold and Danielle Lin. To see the full video, please go to:

wheatgrass.com/danielle-lin-pines-part-one/

Ron is a co-founder of the original #greensuperfood company. Danielle founded the original health talk radio program. Danielle, the founders of Pines and other New Age companies and stores helped build the natural foods market in the 1970s.

In those early days, independent people owned most natural food stores and companies. They believed that foods tainted with farm poisons caused many health problems. Early trade shows for the natural foods market consisted of about 100 brands. About 1,000 people dedicated to #organic farming came to the shows. Now, this past March, nearly 100,000 people attended the most popular show. The show promoted the brands from more than 10,000 companies at their booths..

Pioneers like Danielle Lin and Pines' founders feel disappointed about how disingenuous the natural food marketplace has become with regard to organic farming.. Most companies do not sincerely believe in it. Most support the #fossilfuel industry and package in #petrochemical plastic.

Worse, brands owned by big GMO corps like Coke and Pepsi pretend to support organic farming for their organic brands. Yet, nearly all other products and brands owned by them contain GMO herbicide and pesticide residue. Most of their products are made from #GMO ingredients, including high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and others made from GMO corn, soy and canola.

.

Pines and companies Pines supplies have the only #wheatgrass and #alfalfa grown by small independent 100% organic farmers. Unlike other Kansas growers, Pines grows only certified organic, #NonGMOProject verified, #Kosher, #GlutenFree crops. Because we operate the only green superfood facility in Kansas not built for the confined-animal meat industry, we are the only #vegan friendly grower.

Festuca campestris is much more robust on average than the other palouse prairie grasses such as Agropyron spicatum, Festuca idahoensis, and Koeleria macrantha.

The difference is we use glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen from each bottle in a similar manner used for food storage containers that have a 10 year shelf life. Actually, without oxygen, a product could stay fresh indefinitely! After five years, a #greensuperfood from Pines is still vibrant green while one in a cheap plastic tub has turned brown or a dull grey color.

We all need oxygen. Highly pigmented #vegetables like #PinesWheatGrass, #GreenDuo and #MightyGreens help better utilize oxygen because they increase #NitricOxide levels for greater #stamina and #endurance. Leading nutritionists and even the USDA point to research that shows 9 out 10 people do not eat enough vegetables for the health protection they provide.

Oxygen is essential for life, but when oxygen is in contact with #wheatgrass powder and other highly-pigmented superfoods for months before being purchased, the nutrients slowly devitalize through the process known as oxidation. Thus, even though you must have oxygen to live, oxygen for long periods in containers with highly pigmented superfoods is not a good idea because the oxygen cause vegetable powders in plastic containers and paper packets to lose nutrition.

The effect of oxidation on sensitive green food nutrients was a great concern to Dr. Charles Schnabel, who was called “the father of wheatgrass” by Steve Meyerowitz, author of "Wheatgrass: Nature’s Finest Medicine." Schnabel was the scientist behind medical research beginning in 1937, using whole food wheatgrass powder, that was the scientific basis for the books by Ann Wigmore and other authors. Schnabel used the same oxygen-free packaging used by Pines for the last 40 years. The tight-fitting metal caps allow the bottle to be tightly sealed between uses to help keep the product fresh after opening.

Agropyron intermedium, which includes the bluegreen grass in this photo, is common along roads in Grand Teton National Park and is absent from adjacent high-native-plant-cover sagebrush steppe. Both the glabrous and hairy ("pubescent wheatgrass") coexist in this area. Note the diagnostic stiff blunt (notched) glumes.

A native perennial nitrogen-fixing forb common to the rangeland around Havre that is slowly regenerating native plant diversity from a history of crested wheatgrass "improvement." The lower stipules are usually sheathing.

Agropyron spicatum, bluebunch wheatgrass, dominates unburned and burned sagebrush steppe in the Jarbidge area, especially to the north in and around the border of the Idaho and Nevada along the Jarbidge River drainage. Cheatgrass is essentially non-existent except along roadsides and in localized patches near roads (including two tracks). The Jarbidge Mountains sit in the background. The shrubs in this photo include Artemisia tridentata wyomingensis, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, and Grayia spinosa.

The pectinate or ciliate hairs lining the margin of the leaf sheath are most conspicuous in the lower stem regions.

This is not dew, the drops are there because of the rootpressure of the wheatgrass.
