This year with the high water in the lake the island the western and eared grebe usually nest on was under water. Both species very scarce to be seen here this summer.

A pleasant surprise finding one mom this afternoon with young.

The Western Meadowlark returns yearly to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. The buoyant, flutelike melody of the Western Meadowlark ringing out across a field can brighten anyone’s day. Meadowlarks are often more easily heard than seen. This one was so busy looking for food that it did not mind us getting up close and personal to capture this photo.

I was amazed when this fella flew up on this mossy clean branch. I know how tough they are getting open shots. He sat here for about 10 minutes as I kept my movements to a minimum. One of my favorite shots of this individual so far. Click top right corner arrows to view best.

Still have a small colony of them on the lake. Isle Lake Alberta

Went back this evening and found a nice spot and better angle this time around. The lighting was even from this side which was nicer. It was great seeing the tufts raised also.

Have been trying to get a shot of this beautiful bird for years. Finally found one. Taken in Colorado.

A native of western North America, western columbine (aka Crimson Columbine, Scarlet Columbine, Red Columbine, scientific name Aquilegia formosa) is found in moist shady and partly sunny sites. It is pollinated primarily by hummingbirds. Its sweet nectar and flowers were consumed by some indigenous peoples, though the flowers can become toxic once the seeds start to develop.
