Macro Mondays: Corner

Inspired by #curves and #MacroMondays, a circle of wires.

"Toroidal inductors and transformers are inductors and transformers which use magnetic cores with a toroidal (ring or donut) shape. They are passive electronic components, consisting of a circular ring or donut shaped magnetic core of ferromagnetic material such as laminated iron, iron powder, or ferrite, around which wire is wound."

Aperture f/2 at 60mm, 4cm / 1.57 inches across. In full disclosure, I barely understand the description above, but I do like how these things look.

For Macro Monday's Summer Olympic Sports theme, I went with my favorite sport: Fencing, commonly referred to as physical chess.

After seeing an incredible photo from the 1988 Olympics, I decided I needed to learn how to do it. So I picked it up at Ohio State, and eventually made it onto the sabre team. Good times!

I keep this in the silverware drawer to use almost daily on jars or lids or other such frustrating things. I think this makes me much more gentle than tossing something across the room, don't you?

Back after I ask my significant other what the proper name of this is, if you're interested.

Ah, a pair of duck-billed pliers with which to grip, bend, and twist small things. Small enough for my smallish hand.

I bought this very well used Concise Webster's Dictionery at Found on Fourth. Inside the front cover it is signed by Arnold Chavez of Belen and he's written the date April 27 1932. (Next time we pass through Belen perhaps I'll try to find out more about Arnold).

I love that it's so well used and has fingerprints on the pages. I'm sure it will often be used as a subject for my PoD's.

From an old tin of Woodbine* Dominoes used for many years in a pub. It's such a shame that dominoes and other traditional games are rarely played in pubs these days. In fact many of the old fashioned English pubs have now been converted to restaurants.

The owner of this property has several old cars in his yard. You can see them (as I post them) here www.flickr.com/photos/tags/20230619oldcarsinrochelle

Right now, I have posted two - there will be at least 2 more.

We had a chance to chat with the owner while we were taking pictures. He said he was planning on tearing this house down. We suggested he have the local fire department burn it down. They do that in these parts as a training exercise.

They spend several days setting up drills, burning parts of the building, etc. Then when they've used the place up, they burn it down for you. Saves the wrecking costs, and you make good friends with the firefighters!

That's always handy when you have to call them for help when you've "fallen and you can't get up." For those of you from outside the US or if you're too young to get this reference, here ya go. youtu.be/myfGdhZtKa4

BTW, the FD WILL come out and help if this happens. We had to call them once for just this situation.

For the group Macro Monday this week, the theme is "Fastener".

So I chose this old fashioned window latch which fastens the top window to the bottom window, locking the windows closed. It is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches across.

This is the only old fashioned window fastener left in the house... made in the beautifully decorative manner of the 1800s. All the rest of the windows have had the locks replaced.

Taking this photo was incredibly involved!

First, It is above my head, so I had to stand on a ladder.

Second, I couldn't use my flash because it reflected in the window glass. So I needed a different light. I have several battery operated lights just for this purpose, so I sat one on the windowsill shining on the latch.

This not only was too glaring and diminished the details of the ironwork, but once I had the photo on my computer, the light revealed all sorts of dirt I hadn't known was there. An entire miniature dust bunny was tucked back in there!

So, third, I had to scrub the area clean! Unfortunately, this somehow deposited hundreds of little green threads all over the latch, which I didn't see until the next set of photos were on my computer. So I had to clean it again. And then take test photos to blow up on my computer to see if it was really clean this time.

So, fourth, I recruited my husband to hold the light for me, to give me a better light angle but that got old fast, so I finally duck taped the little battery operated light to the window glass.

Fifth, I realized I needed to do a focus stack to get the whole thing in focus. That meant a tripod. But I don't have a tripod that tall. So I spent a lot of time trying to raise my tripod up upon something. When I finally managed it, I realized that now I couldn't get the ladder close enough to use the camera. So I had to take apart everything I had built, and use my tripod as a monopod, balanced on top of a plastic storage container. Such classy studio equipment!

Sixth, up on the ladder, leaning over awkwardly, trying to hold the tripod/monopod in position to take three or four different focus shots without moving in between, I got a good sized crick in my neck.

And people think photography is easy! It isn't, but it is fun!

A bit short on time and space this week, I saw this hand tool on the work table, so I shot it under the task light there using my iPhone just a couple hours ago. I've had the pleasure of a career and a lot of personal passions that allow me (encourage me) to use a myriad of hand tools every day. I had two dozen cool tools in mind since reading the theme, but it came down to not enough time to create the shots I was imagining. Oh, well. Hope you like this one. You'll notice it has a wooden HANDle.

Crazy Tuesday: Cutting tools

I caught this just in time. Less than a week later, the house had been knocked down.

[update] Here's some backstory. I live about five minutes from this place. And pass it almost every day. However, the house had always been surrounded by trees and brush. And, since the farm was active, I figured the house was occupied. My personal rule regarding murder shacks is that they are unoccupied. I don't always obey that rule, but it is an aspiration.

They're doing a big road construction project nearby. They've been clearing the farm land. Then, suddenly, when I passed on this particular day, the house was visible! And it was clearly unoccupied. And the sky was perfect. So I quickly drove home, told Kate I had to shoot a murder shack, grabbed my camera, and left again.

The house is now gone, along with a really shabby barn, and a shed. The only thing still standing is the silo. I'm curious to see what happens to it.

[update 2] - It's gone.
