Left in a flat calm from San Diego Y.C. soon after 9pm on Wed21Feb. While still in protected water, I raised the mainsail - difficult to raise completely - looking up the mast by torchlight, I realized that the halyard was outside the lazyjacks (thought I'd been careful, as usual, to get that right!) - so down with the main, removed the shackle from the head of the sail - raise the mainsail again (had the boat going around in slow circles all this time!). Still not going up easily - why?

Out with the torch again - halyard now caught around a step high up near the mast top - lower the sail AGAIN & grab hold of the halyard - wave it about until it comes loose from the step & quickly take up on the halyard, raising the main - still a problem as it goes up! I decide to leave the main with two reefs in - since no wind anyway, the point of having the main up was to reduce rolling in the expected swell and just in cast some wind came up later in my passage. Made a mental note to check

raising the main once I'd arrived. Finally, all was OK - lucky no boat traffic around at that time in the darkness - so I finally got going out through the main channel seawards.

A very uneventful motoring passage, with almost no other boats seen and so I was able to get some catnaps (about 20-30 mins at a time). Early in the morning, I was able to make good use of my AIS input into my Nobeltec display - seeing two big, brightly-lit tankers well ahead, the AIS system told me that they were stationary (at anchor, in fact) so I was able to steer a course midway between them, safe in the knowledge that they weren't moving. The night air temperature was really low, as usual after

a clear sunny day, so I was happy to be warm & snug in my new Musto fleecy trousers and tops...!

Mike helped me in to my slip - not too much manoevring needed in a slight breeze - I'd arrived in Mexico!

The marina staff helped with getting my paperwork prepared ready for clearance in to the country and I jumped on my bike to go & clear in - got there about midday and was finished about an hour later ... not bad!

I then celebrated my arrival with a British couple I met while clearing in- fresh fish tacos at the local fish market were very tasty!

Udaipur, Rajasthan‘s most romantic city

After another long drive, a detour on a dirt road and a visit at Ranakpur, one of India’s biggest, most important and very nice looking Jain temple, we got to Udaipur. We don’t really feel the romance, maybe we just did too much sightseeing in the last few days? Udaipur might have pretty lakes and hills, but it’s still loud, crowded and dirty. Our favorite sight is therefore not the city palace, the boat ride on the lake or the 8th century temples outside town, instead it’s our hotel, the amazing Oberoi Udaivilas 😁

I was inspired by this technique article on paper casting by Shari Carroll:

I used regular tissues rather than wrapping paper tissue and it worked fine. I watercolored the flower and white embossed the sentiment .

French: Rennes, Gallo: Resnn, Breton: Roazhon, Latin: Condate, Civitas Redonum) is a city in the east of Brittany in northwestern France. Rennes is the capital of the region of Brittany, as well as the Ille-et-Vilaine department.

Rennes is the administrative capital of the country of Brittany, in France, the other historical capital being Nantes. It has a long history due to its location at the confluence of two rivers.

The eastern Armorican people of Redones founded Condate —an ancient Celtic word meaning confluent— at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers and made it the capital of a territory that extended to the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. The name of the city of Redon also reflects that of the Redones. Early in the 1st century BCE, they adopted the Greek and Roman practice of issuing coinage, adapting the widely imitated gold staters of Philip II of Macedon, in the characteristic Celtic coin metal alloy called billion. Without inscriptions, as the Celtic practice was, the Redones coinage features a charioteer whose pony has a human head. Large hoards of their coins were unearthed in the "treasure of Amanlis" found in June 1835 and that of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, discovered in February 1941. The Museum at Rennes contains a large representative collection.

They joined the Gaulish coalition against Rome in 57 BC, which was suppressed by Crassus. The following year, Roman emissaries were held hostage by the Redones, which obliged Julius Caesar to intervene in Armorica and suppress the rebels, and the following year to cross the Channel to discourage further support of the Redones by the Britons. In 52 the Redones responded to the call of Vercingetorix to furnish a large contingent of warriors.

Returning from Germany’s eastern front in 1918, Menne Spiegel is decorated with the Iron Cross. Twenty-five years later, living as a popular horse merchant in Westphalia, he’s branded with a different insignia: the Star of David. On the eve of a mass deportation of Jews, Spiegel seeks out his old comrade Heinrich Aschoff, a Catholic farmer with a conscience, who instantly agrees to shelter Spiegel’s wife Marga and daughter Karen at his farm despite the risk to his own family. Based on the real Marga Spiegel’s best-selling memoir, Saviors in the Night relates the extraordinary story of the two families’ perilous years together, and with a forthrightness befitting the salt-of-the-earth Aschoff family (later recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial for their death-defying act of compassion). Dutch director Ludi Boeken (Other Face of Terror, SFJFF 1986) captures the characters’ vulnerability as they endeavor to escape detection—rarely has a handheld camera felt more appropriate in a historical drama where a child’s thoughtless remark might mean a death sentence. The Aschoffs’ rural village isn’t as malignant as the one in Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon, but the good deeds of the few are undermined by neighbors’ whispers and resentment. Moreover, family bonds are tested, as the Aschoffs must justify their act of courage to a daughter whose friends have joined the Hitler Youth and a son who is fighting on the front. With outstanding performances and a riveting conclusion, Saviors in the Night delivers a powerful message about the price—and rewards—of altruism. This is an extraordinary feature film that powerfully records one memorable instance of moral courage under desperate conditions.—Max Goldberg

Strobist Info:

Earlier in the morning I had my light stands and several flashes for off camera flash photography, but I quickly realized...it's not going to be easy with all the foot traffic and the limited space that I had since I focused on one location most of the time. But I like the challenge and I decided to focus on bouncing the flash off walls and the ceiling.

I kept things to a minimum which worked out in the end. Stayed with a 50mm f/1.8 and for Flash, although I brought a better flash with me, I figured this would be good to test out the Sunpak PF30X/DigiFlash 2800 on the hot shoe. I typically use other types of flash units but for this shoot, I wanted to try this Sunpak as a good experiment. Bouncing off the flash through a wall and also a mirror at +0.5 or -0.5.

But it was quite an interesting test and I'm grateful for those who gave me the opportunity to take their picture and those who were willing to let me do some tests with bouncing the flash in the exhibit hall.

More of my recent housekeeping and streamlining some of my websites (as well as keeping my flickr screenshots set up to date).

So here's a slight refresh on the layout of fantasyfestivals.com

You can have a look in my flickr screenshots set to see how it used to look if you want a before and after.

This was mainly about installing new versions of the platform and theme, tweaking the SEO as well as stripping away a bit of clutter to improve the page load times and reduce server load. Added a few new photos to the big slideshow to complete the mini-makeover.

MCKNGBRD is a passion project that grew from a strong desire to make beauti-ful and protec-tive pro-ducts for personal tech. The brand bridges the gap between fast and slow, hand and machine, personal tech and luxury fashion. Founder Navid Mokhberi has set out to create the kind of cases he him-self wanted to own: hard-working, versa-tile and exquisi-tely made. The brand’s premium cases are design-ed to be 'refined enough for the board-room, yet rugged enough for an after-noon hike'.

We have been working with MCKNGBRD since 2014, when the company was founded. Our initial project for the brand* encompassed naming and the design of the visual identity, including a range of printed pieces.

As the product develop-ment reached its final stages in the Autumn of 2018, we were commis-sioned to design and develop an e-commerce plat-form and brand site for MCKNGBRD. The site is built around two main sections; the Shop and the Brand. While the Shop section employs a modular grid with forced asymmetrical shifts, the brand section tells the story of the brand in a contin-uous, single line of type travelling horizon-tally (desktop). Throughout this stream of cons-cious-ness, the text is continually inter-sected by images and videos, illustra-ting the story. This collage of imagery was pains-takingly sourced, collected and scanned from old comics, maga-zines and films. The text is based around story provid-ed by MCKNGBRD’s founder, which we re-wrote and refor-matted for the website.

A bespoke typeface, called MCKNGBRD Serif (SemiBold), was designed in colla-boration with type designer Tor Weibull. The typeface is used for display purposes across the site and most promin-ently in its Story section.

Additionally, we art directed a series of photo-shoots, both encompas-sing the product imagery for the webshop and campaign focused images. Here, we worked closely with photo-graphers Carl Oliver Ander and Erik Gustafsson, who both move seam-lessly between the worlds of art and commerce. For the product imagery, we aimed to emphasise the adapt-ability of the products by super-imposing them on large format printed image back-grounds. The image back-grounds were all shot by Ander on nume-rous loca-tions around Europe and in the US. Much like the Mockingbird’s ability to mimic the sounds of its environ-ment, making it one of nature’s most skilled adopters, the images create a tromp l'œil, where it is some-times hard to distin-guish between 2D and 3D. The campaign images expands on this idea, with multiple layers of images and physical objects creating a theatre-like set for the products.

Additional campaign imagery was shot by Erik Gustafsson, who employed his signa-ture snap-shot style and made a visual diary of a day and night with the cases. To amplify the distinc-tion between the two types images, these were all shot on film, leaving physical discre-pancies and applying only very moderate editing in post-production.

We work continously with MCKNGBRD as they enter new markets and as their product catalogue keeps growing.
