Gold Mother is the fourth album by the band James, released on June 4th 1990 and provided their mainstream breakthrough. It features their first top 40 singles How Was It For You? and Come Home. The 1991 reissue featured a changed track list and included their number 2 single Sit Down. The album featured an expanded sound with Saul Davies on percussion and violin, Mark Hunter on keyboards and Andy Diagram on trumpet having been added to the band along with Dave Baynton-Power replacing the departed Gavan Whelan. The name of the album comes from the title track detailing the birth of Tim’s son mothered by the band’s manager Martine.

We are facing a new dark age here on Earth, we have to say it by its name, it's fascism again. Migrants and refugees don't travel thousands of miles just for business or pleasure, but for a better life, or in most of the times, just to survive. Closing ports and piers to groups of starving humans is inhuman. Putting migrants in jails and processing as felons is cruel, but what it doesn't have a name is to separate children from their parents, and putting them in cages. It is just the worst of the worst. The UN says this is torture. What happens next? Ask the historians or people who reads books and they will speak of the evil that originate the WW II and the Holocaust. The people on the government doesn't read books. We must be heard. This has to stop. No more inhuman acts, no more fascism! The president's wife says "I really don't care, do U? Well, we all care!!

"There's only love that's strong enough

to rescue us from self destruct

You don't think so, but we're all the same

that's just how it is

there's only one human race

many faces

everybody belongs here

there's only one human race

many faces

everybody belongs here

(...)

We're here to reconcile our hearts

We're born, so we die

our lives are all entwined

you see differences

All walls fall over time

we're here to reconcile our hearts"

I've always loved Tim Booth and the way he greets and appreciates his audience is sweet and remarkable too. One can't help but wish the man a very Happy Birthday!

…If you dare to brave the wolves and the frosts and icy winds…if you venture out into the woods on Christmas Eve night…

Then stay hidden, my little one, be quiet and be still…

Listen for the sound of music as the moon rises, for the song of bells and for light and joyful footfalls…

For the Lord and his Lady will waltz among the snow flurries, spin amongst the forests and dance through the silver birch trees…

………………

A few weeks ago I woke up in the early hours of the morning, still rousing from half-remembered dreams, with these characters in my head – moving elegantly through a forest of silver birches, dancing to a beat I could not hear…

......

Dance like no one's watching...because, they're probably not. And if they are, assume it is with the best of human intentions. The way bodies move genuinely to beats is, after all, gorgeous and affecting….

~ Tanya Davis

....

This was drawn while musing on Elwood P. Dowd's most lovely philosophy of life (which, admittedly, isn't actually about dancing, but you do get to see Jimmy Stewart do a brief but very endearing soft-shoe shuffle –'I used to know a whole lotta dances...the the, uh…Flea Hop…and…what’s the uh…the…Black Bottom...the Varsity Drag...' )

…and while being completely and utterly uplifted by James - and by Tim Booth’s wonderfully freeing Five Rhythms dancing…

I worked on this picture both before and after seeing James (the most amazing live band to ever grace a stage) in concert in Manchester, which was one of the happiest evenings I’ve had in a long time… They fought not only the elements (snow hit us in huge icy drifts) but also injury and illness to play to an elated crowd in their home town, and I was delighted to be there to see it…

Their music was as uplifting, joyful and moving as ever – and the night culminated in a magnificent finale - with a crowd of audience members up on stage, beautifully and unselfconsciously getting their groove on amongst the band, while Tim whirled and bounced, flying high on the beats.

Glorious. :)

………

And last but certainly not least – wishing you all the merriest and most magical of Christmasses, and a bright and peaceful Yuletide season!

Thankyou so much to you all for your incredibly kind words and lovely feedback this year, and for sharing all your amazing artwork and photographs. Have a fantastic 2011!

Love and the warmest of wishes to all…and a very Happy Christmas. :)

This is now available as a greetings card! :) If you are interested, please send me a message and I'll let you know the details.

This was inspired by the Royal Exchange Theatre's most amazing production of Doctor Faustus, which I was lucky enough to see recently... (and hope to see again this week, as they approach the last days of their run).

I adore the Royal Exchange, and have never been disappointed by their shows (looooooook... isn't it beautiful? From the glorious outer hall to the inside of the theatre pod itself – how could you not love it?) And this really was one of the very best things I've seen performed there.

...A cacophony of smoke and blood spatters, cries and whispers, gothica and gore, passion and madness, lust and ambition, elation and glory...

Not to mention elegant sleight of hand magic, grotesque giant masks, puppetry, glorious costumes and to top it all, a flawless cast of Players. (For a bit of insight into the making of the show, and interviews with the actors, click here...)

I haven't been able to get the play out of my mind, and started toying with sketches of the characters – out of which this emerged... I loved the idea of Faustus and others gathering in the autumn nights as dusk falls, warming their hands over a flickering fire and telling their stories...

I'd have very much liked to have included all the actors and characters, but space was limited, so I've had to keep it to just four: (left to right) Robin (as played by Rory Murphy), Wagner (Stephen Hudson), Mephistopheles (Ian Redford) and Faustus himself (Patrick O'Kane).

~ I should add that the creepy little demon things weren't little at all, and were actually played by full-size actors (an excellent ensemble from Manchester's Metropolitan University School of Theatre, who were perfectly choreographed and downright scary), as was Helen of Troy (played by the very brilliant Coral Messam).

But they wouldn't fit in full size, so had to be shrunk.

Artistic licence and all that.

:-)

Drawn with the utmost respect for - and with very appreciative applause for - all at the Royal Exchange, the amazing cast, crew, Toby Frow (the director) and their design and production team – and to James, who's lyrics seemed to fit so well with this scene...

Thankyou, all.

.........

** Update - 26/10/10 - some fantastic production photos can be seen over at the Exchange's Flickr page (although you may need to scroll through to find em) ...and this extraordinary and powerful montage of players and scenes captures the essence - and the heart - of the production perfectly... **

This was possibly the greatest concert I have ever been to. I

appreciated that they started off with "Laid" and got the song out of

the way. They played for nearly 2.25 hours. The band, especially Mr.

Singer, was having so much fun on stage. They seemed to really

appreciate how much the crowd appreciated their outstanding performance.

If a reviewer gives this concert a bad review they are out of touch with

amazingness.

I'm glad I left my real camera at home. It was nice to just enjoy the

music.

James singer Tim Booth at the acoustic set for the promo of their new album "La Petite Mort" at El Corte Inglés Callao. Tim Booth & Mark Hunter played 4 songs from the new album and 2 classic of James: Just Like Fred Astaire and She´s A Star. An unforgettable night that James fans will never forget!

A story about me:

i have always loved James. "Laid" is the first song i heard from them, and i inmediately fell for it because of its simpleness and how fast is just passes by. When they separated i thought "there goes another band i'll never see". I never considered they would get back together much less play here. When "sometimes" was came in the setlist, tears just started flowing out of my eyes. i remember i went with you.

I had to go to the Natick Mall to pick up tickets I'd bought through Ticketmaster (because, silly me, when I was buying the tickets, I figured there HAD to be a Ticketmaster retail outlet in the greater Worcester area, only to find out later that the nearest are Natick, Leominster, or Southboro).

(And while I'm in parenthetical asides, how is it that two tickets that "cost $22 each" ended up costing $62 all together? This must be a result of that crazy new "everyday math" bull they're using in the public schools, I swear!)

(But, in another parenthetical aside, I'm going to see James, my all time favorite band ever ever ever live in Boston in September as they kick off their first U.S. tour in YEARS, and the day before their new CD launches in the U.S. [though I may just go ahead and buy tine import which has been out for a while overseas]. I'm so freaking overjoyed about this.)

(So, does anyone else like James, and want to go with me? Because I don't want to go into Boston alone on a weeknight until all hours, and Gary absolutely hates them. This is the one downside of loving a fairly obscure [except for one song, and if all you know of James is "Laid," I'm afraid you need to be further educated] band - not a bunch of people lining up to go with me.)

Anyhow, so we had to go to pick them up, and I figured the Natick Mall would be inside and air conditioned, and sure enough, it was. Glorious air conditioning all day. And the mall is ridiculously, insanely large. Seriously. We walked and walked and walked. And since it was air conditioned, I didn't keel over, woot!

And most of the stores were having clearance sales, so I got a few new shirts, these and two other pairs of earrings, and a few cute thigns to stick in a care package for Rowan at camp.

I also bought a small surprise for Rowan for when she returns home from camp, but that's gonig to be a secret for another week or so. ;-)

(And no, it's NOT alive, don't worry!)

So after many many years i finally saw one of my favorite gruops from a long time ago. I honestly never think they would get back together, much less visit Mexico, much much less take pictures of them. And to make up for that long wait, they played a concert that was a little longer than what they had been playing, so i heard a couple of personal favorites like "ring the bells" and "play dead" and especially "sometimes" which brought tears to my eyes.

Memories. :)

My brother went with me to the concert.

Some of these photos were taken by him (the ones with the "G" in the lower right corner.) I'm so glad he went with me -- he's one of my favorite people, and he got maybe 3 hours of sleep that night before work the next day, just so I didn't have to go by myself to see a band he only knows through what he hears when he's here. He's a great guy, to say the least.
