Machina makes music with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They are on the leading edge of an evolution where clothing merges with technology and integration becomes ubiquitous in every device we have. But that?s only the beginning. The second step will be clothing turning into exoskeletons, allowing people to do things that they couldn?t do before (lift heavier items, have better integration with computers, be able to jump higher). Then, biological components will allow us to build clothing that merges with skin, where a suit will no longer be an external part of the body (a little bit like a contact lens). Function, fashion, and form in concert.

An emotional social network.
The visualization shown on FakePress’s homepage represents the beginning phase of a design process. It uses Plutchik’s classification and uses realtime search engines to collect emotional information from social networks. It then represents it as an expressive visualization. We are going to turn it into a wearable device.

The Big Wall in the Vroom
The Big Wall in the Vroom (Virtual Room) is a tiled display environment with four rows of eight displays for a total of 32 narrow-bezel NEC X551UN LCD displays with a 55" screen diagonal. Each of the displays has full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels), adding up to 66 million pixels on the entire wall (15,360 x 4,320 pixels). We also support multi-channel audio, and use a four-camera optical tracking system from Vicon. All displays have been attached in 2x2 patterns to mounting structures, which are either installed in movable containers (OptiPortables) o

In 1995, MIT’s Nicholas Negroponte predicted that “being digital” would have us entering a realm increasingly unconstrained by the materiality of the world. Two decades later, our everyday lives are indeed ever more suffused by computation and calculation. But unwieldy materiality persists and even reasserts itself. Programmable matter, self-assembling structures, 3D/4D printing, wearable technologies and bio-inspired design today capture the attention of engineers, scientists and artists. “BEING MATERIAL” showcased recent developments in materials systems and design, placing this work in dialogue with kindred and contrasting philosophy, art practice and critique. Panels on the PROGRAMMABLE, WEARABLE, LIVABLE and INVISIBLE—along with a concert, AUDIBLE—explored new and unexpected meetings of the digital and material worlds.
