Playing dirty is a requirement when you want to win the Mud Olympics (Wattolümpiade) in Brunsbüttel/Germany. There are football, handball and volleyball matches, and relay races using an eel instead of a baton. And of course, there's mud. Lots of it.

Tales of T212 #14 : Blaine Thomas - boblemke.blogspot.ca/2009/11/tales-of-t212-14-blaine-thom...

Blaine M. Thomas was born in August 1888, in Glendora, California – but no one has yet been able to turn up the date of his birth.

Blaine M. "Baldy" Thomas (b. August 1888 – d. August 21, 1915) was a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who played briefly for the Boston Red Sox during the 1911 season. Listed at 5' 10", 165 lb., Thomas batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Glendora, California.

(Los Angeles Herald, January 01, 1909) - The Salt Lakes and the Edison clubs of the California Winter league will use the Chutes park diamond as their battlefield for Sunday's game. This will be the first game played on these grounds since the close of the Pacific Coast league, and no doubt a large attendance will be on hand to cheer their respective teams to victory. Manager Mitchell of the railroad club will have his star pitcher go on the mound against the wire stringers, while "Baldy" Thomas will go in the box for the Edison aggregation. This boy Thomas is ranked as one of the finest semi-professional pitchers in the south. He is the only one who has succeeded in shutting out the fast San Diego club.

(Los Angeles Herald, January 17, 1909) - George M. Ward, manager for the Edison team and secretary of the California "Winter league", made the announcement yesterday that Baldy Thomas, the local amateur who has been pitching for him, has signed a contract to twirl for the Chicago Cubs this season. Thomas, who resides at Hynes, California is a well built man, with a world of speed, never having played professional ball, but he passed most of his sandlot days playing on the Compton high school team.

(The Washington Times, January 26, 1909) - Manger Frank Chance of the Chicago Cubs has signed "Baldy" Thomas the star pitcher of the Edison team in the California Winter League.

(Bisbee Daily Review, February 25, 1910) - NEW ELKS CROWD

CANANEA STREETS (Cananea is a city in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, Northwestern Mexico, on the U.S−Mexico border) - Blaine Thomas, a pitcher, and Spider Adams, a backstop, came In yesterday to remain the season as members of the local Cananea ball team.

(The Seattle Star, January 26, 1911) - LOTS OF PITCHERS - VICTORIA, BC . Jan 26 - If Victoria does not have a successful season this year. It will not be for want of pitching talent. Not content with getting on his roster such sterling slabsters as Marshall, Davis, Cole, Lane and Tonneson. Manager Wattelet has signed Blaine Thomas, a star from the famous Three I league.

Thomas played for the Victoria Bees in British Columbia in 1911, in the Northwestern League. He was 7-11 in Class B baseball and hit .145 in 69 at-bats with a home run and two triples among his 10 hits.

1911 Census of Canada for Blaine Thomas - he was staying at the Dominion Hotel (1406 Government Street) in Victoria, B.C along with the rest of the baseball team. Link - data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1911/jpg/e001943108.jpg

(Sporting Life - 27 May 1911) - Pitcher Blaine Thomas, of Victoria, on May 11, held Spokane to one hit, winning his game, 2-1, and struck out 14 men.

(The Sunday Oregonian, July 09, 1911) - Manager Wattelet, of the Victoria Northwestern League ball club, is permitting Pitcher Blaine Thomas, his speed-ball artist, to go East tonight to join the Boston Americans, notwithstanding the fact that his twirling staff is already in a sadly crippled condition. There should be a league rule preventing such disruption of a club. Victoria may need the money mighty badly at this stage of the game, but nothing tends to put the National game on the toboggan alley quicker than mid-season bartering of players. If the Victoria fans stand for Wattellet's action it will simply be because they do not understand what a square deal in the great American pastime means. Wattlet says he gets $3000 for Thomas.

(El Paso Herald, September 01, 1911) Blaine Thomas, former pitcher for Cananea, has been sold by the Victoria B. C, club to the Boston Americans for $2500. Bill Goodman, the crack third baseman, goes to this same team, being sold for a like figure. Bert Whaling, the crack backstop of last season, has been sold by Seattle to the New York Giants for $1500. All of these men played with Cananea last year.

(The Seattle Star, February 06, 1912) - It may be that the Red Sox will be nipped in another beauty, purchased last fall, although there is more promise in the player and a lesser amount was involved. It is the case of Blaine Thomas, the Victoria speed phenom. Every one says Blaine will do nicely if he ever gets control, but it Is liable to be a long wait.

In 1912, he appeared in one (?) game in the Pacific Coast League, pitching for Sacramento. He pitched nine innings for the Sacts and gave up five runs on 12 hits, losing the game.

(Sacramento Union, Number 1, 1 March 1912) - Blaine Thomas, the new pitcher, arrived in town from Seattle yesterday

morning.

(Sacramento Union, Number 5, 5 March 1912) - It's fair to play favorites at this stage of the game, but that boy Blaine Thomas, the new pitcher turned over from the Northwestern by the Boston Red Box, was the hit of the day. To be sure he did not lake the mound against any team that was out for his scalp: he only lobbed them over in batting practice and cut loose for a few minutes in warming up with Catcher Price. But there’s something that can be judged even in such practice. Thomas handles himself like a winner. He has all the confidence in the world in his bearing and actions, and yet this confidence is veiled by a modesty which would do credit to a busher just breaking into the game. Thomas has plenty of speed and mixes it up with a slow ball that should prove a fooler. None of the pitchers were allowed to “break loose” with the real stuff today, but Thomas came as near to it as any of the old-timers, and showed up favorably alongside of Spider Baum and Jawn Fitzgerald in the day’s practice.

(Sacramento Union, Number 15, 15 March 1912) - HOME-RUN PITCHER LOOMS UP Thomas Breaks Up Game by Long Drive - By C. E. BRAZIER. Special to the Union. Marysville (Yuba co.), March 14. - A home run pitcher! That’s the latest discovery in the ranks of the Senators in their training camp here. And the funny part of it is that it is not Chris Mahoney. It is the quiet and unassuming Blaine Thomas, the pitcher from the Northtwesterners who has already been touted as the most promising speed artist on the coast this summer. In Sunday afternoon’s game at Sacramento, Thomas broke up a tie score with a hit which scored Hughie Miller from second with the run which defeated the St. Mary’s boys. This afternoon Thomas went himself one better. In the first half of the ninth inning between the O’Rourke "Regulars” and the Van Buren "Yannigans,” Thomas drove one over the left field fence for a home run, scoring Al Heister from first and breaking up what had been a three to three tie score.

(Sacramento Union, Number 45, 14 April 1912) - BLAINE THOMAS HAS PLENTY Of SPEED BUT THAT'S ALL - New Pitcher Given His First Chance and Lasts Less Than One inning. - Another one of those experiments with the Sacramento pitching staff cost the Senators another game. The Seals won by a score of 3 to 0 and every one of the three runs forced across by four bases on balls dished out in the first inning in potions of three by Blaine Thomas and one by Spider Baum. Without that first Inning it would have been the best game of the season at Buffalo park. After Spider Baum had warmed up to his task when he relieved Thomas in the first, he was a worthy opponent for the Seals’ pitcher. Blaine Thomas, the pitcher who came to the Senators via the Boston Red Sox route from the Northwestern league, was sent to the mound by Patsy, and seven men faced Thomas and two runs had been forced across before Patsy decided that his speedburning pitcher did not have the control which would get away with a victory.

(Sacramento Union, Number 16, 16 May 1912) - Blaine Thomas, the speed ball artist, was called in for his second trial of the season. In his only other appearance as a Sacramento Coast league pitcher since the season opened, Thomas allowed two hits and forced across two runs by walking three men in two-thirds of an inning. Thomas still showed signs of wildness yesterday. He walked three men and wore out about all of Cheek’s energies behind the plate with his erratic offerings. But Thomas showed enough improvement so that he could pitch five and one-third innings and allow only one run and four hits. Incidentally Thomas fanned Howard and Metzger, two of the Angels who did most of the damage in the hitting line yesterday.

(Los Angeles Herald, Number 212, 30 May 1912) - Senators Are Due for Big Shake-Up - SACRAMENTO. May 30.—With 23 Senators on the payroll and those on the hospital list about to get back Into the game again, Manager Charles Graham Is figuring on pruning down the squad to its normal size. First Baseman Joe Williams will probably be sent to the Northwest league and Pitcher Blaine Thomas will likely be turned over to some minor club. Other releases are also expected.

(Sacramento Union, Number 50, 19 June 1912) - Blaine Thomas, who is now over a slight illness at Richardson Springs, was notified last night of his unconditional from the Senators owing to his failure to get his speed ball offerings under control.

(Morning Oregonian, July 03, 1912) - PORTLAND COLTS WIN

FIRST FROM VANCOUVER BEAVERS - The unreliable Blaine Thomas, Boston and Sacramento fame, almost as cruelly, the Colts drew first blood in the initial Portland - Vancouver series

of the season on the McCredie lot yesterday afternoon. Score 7 - 4. Blaine Thomas, the Victoria speed demon of last season, sold to Boston, turned over to Sacramento, and turned adrift by the Senators, pitched for five innings. The Colts only hit him safely twice but Thomas issued seven bases on bails, hit one batsman, and chalked up two wild pitches.

(Bisbee Daily Review., August 28, 1912) - The services of Blaine Thomas, who played with the Boston Americans the first of this season and tho latter part of the last season, are at Bisbee's command if they are desired. Thomas twirled for Cananea two seasons in the life of the old Cactus league and afterwards was signed by the Boston Americans. Thomas, it was said by baseball writers of the east, was second only to Walter Johnson of the Washington team, in speed, but his defect was his inability to control his balls. The management of the Boston Americans thought so much of his marvelous speed that they retained him untll the present season in the hope of eradicating the defect but the speedy pace of rival clubs made It necessary for the Bostonians to fight with what weapons they had and let the youngsters out, so Thomas was released. Thomas is now at Clearwater, California recuperating from an attack of malarial fever and wants to come to this altitude to rid his system of the effects of the fever. He has so written Hugh Dugan, his old team mate here. "I have caught Thomas and he was a speed marvel," said Dugan yesterday "He was a little wild but at that his advantage in speed partly overcame the defect of wildness."

(El Paso Herald, September 02, 1912) - Blaine Thomas, of the old Cananea club has had a couple of tryouts with the majors and relegated for the present until he can gain the necessary

control. Blaine has a wonderful short arm delivery which resembles the crack of a mule driver's whip. But he can't put 'em over, a thing more vital than speed and curves in fast company. His is the history of every possibility in the pitching department.

(Arizona republican., October 12, 1913) - This will be the day, right now, when Tucson's Groves come up for their lambasting

at the hands of the Senators at Grant park this afternoon. The outfield will contain the fresh new face of Baldy Thomas, late of the Bostonians. And then there will be Kid Warren and Han Clow.

(Los Angeles Herald, Number 56, 5 January 1915) - Arizona Baseball Opens This Month - “Baldy” Thomas, former Coast league twirler, writes that the baseball season will start in Arizona the latter part of this month. Thomas is a bailiff In the Federal court when he is not bending them over for the Globe team.

(Los Angeles Herald, Number 114, 13 March 1915) - Arizona League Is Seeking Players - C. C. Simmons, who is handling the Globe team, is after several Los Angeles players, according to word received today by Bill Goodman. They have an Independent league in Arizona, the players working in the mines during the week and playing ball Saturday or Sunday. Among the players wanted by Simmons are Roy Watson, Harry Trotter Miller and Sid Hatch. “Baldy” Thomas, former Coast league pitcher, is there now. Miami and Prescott also are starting teams.

(Los Angeles Herald, Number 187, 7 June 1915) - THOMAS QUITS LEAGUE- Baldy Thomas, former Coast league pitcher, has quit pitching in the Rio Grande league.

(Los Angeles Herald, Number 262, 2 September 1915) - Former Sacramento Pitcher Dies in Arizona - "Baldy” Thomas, former Sacramento pitcher, died at Hayden, Arizona the other day, according to word received this afternoon by Bill Goodman. Thomas and Goodman were sold by Victoria to the Boston Red Sox In 1912. Thomas was sent to Sacramento. He had been ill for some time.

(St. Johns Herald and Apache news, September 02, 1915) - Last Sunday the baseball teams of Globe and Miami played a benefit game, all the proceeds going to defray the burial expenses of "Baldy" Thomas, a noted character and old-timer, who died there recently.

In his one-season MLB career with the Boston Red Sox, Thomas posted a perfect 0.00 earned run average with seven walks and three hits allowed in 4⅓ innings of work and did not have a decision or strikeouts.

Thomas died at the age of 27 in Payson, Arizona.

Ed Householder

Positions: Outfielder and First Baseman

Bats: Left • Throws: Left

5-9, 180 lbs

Born: October 12, 1869 in Pittsburgh, PA

Died: July 3, 1924 at age 54

Edward H. Householder (b. October 12, 1869 – d. July 3, 1924 at age 54) was an outfielder in Major League Baseball. He played for the Brooklyn Superbas in 1903. He stood at 5 ft 9 in and weighed 180 lbs.

Householder was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and started his professional baseball career in 1897 in the New York State League. He then spent most of 1898 with the Eastern League's Buffalo Bisons and batted .312 in 102 games. The following season, he also played for Buffalo but then moved to the Rochester Bronchos in July. Householder hit .350 over the final two months and helped Rochester win the EL pennant. In 1900, he continued to put up big numbers and drove in 94 runs, which was the seventh-best total in the league.

Householder slumped in 1901. He started the year in the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League but hit just .221 and then moved to the California League, where he hit .298. In 1902, he returned to form with a .308 batting average and 220 hits over the long California League season. This earned him a shot in the major leagues, and he made his MLB debut on April 17 for the Brooklyn Superbas. Householder was Brooklyn's center fielder for the next two weeks. He went 9 for 43 (.209) at the plate, with 9 runs batted in and 3 stolen bases. His OPS+ was just 31. He played his final MLB game on April 30 and then finished out the campaign with minor league teams in Los Angeles, California, and Little Rock, Arkansas, batting over .300 with both.

After spending 1904 with the Little Rock Travelers, Householder returned to the west coast, where he would stay for the rest of his career. He batted under .300 in 1905 and 1906 in the Pacific Coast League and then moved to the Aberdeen Black Cats of the Northwestern League. Householder had probably his best statistical season in 1907, when he was 37 years old. He won his first batting title with a .347 batting average and also led the entire league in slugging percentage, total bases, and doubles. He played with Aberdeen again in 1908 and then made stops in Fresno, Santa Cruz, Vancouver, and Victoria.

After batting .312 in 1911, Householder retired from professional baseball. He ended his 15-year minor league career with a .295 batting average and a total of 1,826 hits. Householder died of stomach cancer in 1924.

(The Spokane Press, October 31, 1910) - TO DECIDE ON NEW CIRCUIT (By United Press Leased Wire) TACOMA, Wash., Oct. 31 - Judge Lindsay of Seattle, president of the Northwestern league, has issued a call for a league meeting to be held in Seattle tomorrow, when the circuit for next year will be formally arranged. It has practically been decided that Victoria will be given the sixth berth In the league, the other five members being Seattle, Vancouver, Spokane, Tacoma and Portland. Victoria has deposited its forfeit money and the club has backing to the amount of $10,000. Eddie Householder, the well known ball player, who will be Victoria's manager, according to report, is now in California hustling for talent.

(The Spokane Press, November 01, 1910) - League Meets

Tomorrow - Owner Joseph Cohn of the Indians leaves this afternoon for Seattle to attend the meeting of the Northwestern league magnates to be held in that city tomorrow afternoon. The principal business to be transacted is the decision of the question of which city will be admitted to complete the six team circuit for next season. Portland is assured of a berth in the league next season, and it remains to be decided whether Victoria or Everett will be the other town. At present the dope runs all in favor of Victoria. Eddie Householder will manage the Victoria team if that city gets in.

(The Spokane Press, November 29, 1910) - HOUSEHOLDER TO LEAD VICTORIA - Eddie Householder, well known in the Northwestern league territory, has secured an interest in the

Victoria franchise for next season, and is now hustling to sign up a strong, fast team. Eddie says that he wants to make good from the jump in his managerial venture, and he is willing to let go of the coin in order to get the men he wants.

(Sporting Life, 6 May 1911) - Manager Eddie Householder and his new team here already become popular in Victoria, B. C., which has the base ball fever as badly as any city across the

border.

(The Tacoma Times, May 16, 1911) - Householder and Wattelet

Make a Great Team - Eddie Householder and his braves were around the familiar haunts last evening, extending the glad hand. Eddie was in charge, all by his lonesome yesterday, but the irrepressible Wattlet will be on hand today, to drop a few interesting yarns, and perhaps pull off a few trades with the Tiger boss. Eddie and Wat made a great team all right, and are deserving of all kinds of success. Ed knows the game, forwards, backwards and then some, and Wat can be depended on to keep the press agent stuff going. The Islanders played their first series here, and it seems just like getting home to all the boys.

(The Tacoma Times, June 01, 1911) - BOTH PLAYERS RE-INSTATED (By United Press Leased Wire.) SEATTLE, May 31. Eddie Householder of Victoria and Eddie Meneor of Portland were both fined $25 today by President Lindsay for engaging in a fist fight on the field at Tacoma last Sunday. Judge Lindsay went to Tacoma to investigate the affair. The suspension of both has been lifted.

(The Tacoma Times, July 15, 1911) - Householder

With Seattle - (By United Press Leased Wire.) SEATTLE, July 15. — Eddie Householder, former manager of the Victoria team, has joined Seattle and played in yesterday's game.

(Los Angeles Herald, 28 July 1911) - Bill Goodman, formerly of the Hoegee semi-pro team in this city, is the new manager of the Victoria club in the Northwestern league, succeeding Eddie Householder, who Is now playing the outfield for Seattle.
