This was a lot of fun, but dragged on forever due to work commitments and that little thing called a 'Social Life', but mainly because I'm a terrible procrastinator and very easily sidetracked.

I also spend a LOT of time surfing flickr - so many inspirational images! - and reading books on historic houses/interior design (well, I say reading...I mainly 'read' the kind of books with more pictures than words!!) So this room is a hybrid of various places, such as:

Charlecote Park

Superb Tudor house and landscape deer park

Charlecote has been home to the Lucy family since the 12th century. Their stories are told throughout the house with their portraits as well as through the objects they collected from around the world. See the design influence they had on the house and parkland. Step into the house today and you will see how Mary Elizabeth Lucy spared no expense furnishing it in Victorian times.

The gardens include a formal parterre, colourful herbaceous planting, woodland walk and the wider parkland (inspired by 'Capability' Brown), which offers miles of walks and views across the River Avon. A herd of fallow deer has been in the park since Tudor times.

…… A bit of self indulgence today for my #321 shot of the day, finished the wall panelling on the last wall today - 3 weeks of much knee bending!! We fell in love with some where we stay in the lake District so now we have our very own ‘Sale Fell’ in Shropshire instead of Cumbria. Just got to rearrange the furniture now! Alan:-)

Edinburgh Castle 28/04/2014 16h47

The "Great Hall" in the Royal Scotts. The castle's main banquetting chamberin the 16th century but converted a barracks by Cromwell in 1650. Restored into its present state in 1891. Only the great roof is medieval. Only the wall panelling, stained-glass and fireplace are all Victorian, and the arms and armour are on loan from the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. It has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions.

William died September 23rd 1721 aged 51.

Robert died 12th April 1724 aged 21.

" Drake says, "by the ablest judges of the former kind of work, he was look'd upon as the best artist in England, and for architecture, his reparation of Beverley Minster ought to give him a lasting memorial."

From the History Timeline on Beverley Minster website;

"By the early 18th century Beverley Minster, as a result of neglect, was in a poor state of repair. Money was raised by local townspeople and in 1716 Nicholas Hawksmoor, was invited to come to Beverley and give advice on the restoration of the north wall of the north transept, which was leaning four feet into the street. The roof of the north transept was removed and a wooden cradle, designed by a York joiner, William Thornton, was placed on the exterior and interior of the wall; over a period of eleven days the cradle, by the use of ropes and pulleys, was raised and the wall gradually returned to an upright position."

A model for a summer house at Swinton Park by the carpenter and architect William Thornton was approved by Sir Abstrupus Danby in 1700.

The massive red-brick facades of Beningbrough Hall are set above the River Ouse, built in 1716, supervised by William Thornton, a local carpenter architect.

Edited from British History Online

"Sir Charles Hotham, Bt.,employed the London, architect Colen Campbell to design a large town house in Eastgate, Beverley. Building work began in 1716. The cubical centre block was flanked by lower wings, with stables and service rooms on either side. The main staircase was of mahogany and cedarwood. The entrance front had two reception rooms flanking the vestibule, but the principal rooms overlooked the garden. The elevations were of brick with ample stone dressings to the windows, Ionic porch, cornice, and crowning balustrade with urns. The internal detailing and supervision of the work were probably left to the carver and architect William Thornton, who was also then at work on the nearby minster. In 1719 Thornton was paid £730 for his work, presumably including some carving: surviving fragments can be stylistically attributed to his firm. The house had a short life. It was bought by the builder Thomas Wrightson in 1766 and he demolished it."

If you are looking for a durable and unique alternative to paint or paper for your walls, peel and stick wood wall UK based panels could be the answer. Such panels allow you to create the perfect finish for any room and to do so easily.

Stick on wood panels allow you to change any room in the house in just a few simple steps. When working with peel and stick wood panels for walls UK wide, all you need to do is measure the space, purchase the panels, and stick them in place. Of course, to get the perfect finish, you do need to ensure that your walls are prepared and free from dirt, dust, and loose paint or paper.
