It had seemed like a perfectly sensible idea when Pip first suggested it.
A car. A few clothes. Enough money to keep them moving and absolutely no idea where they were going.
Debbie climbed into the passenger seat and looked at the bags squeezed behind them.
“You said we were travelling light.”
“We are.”
“I've brought three bags.”
“I noticed.”
“And my guitar.”
Pip glanced over her shoulder. “I definitely noticed that.”
Debbie smiled. “You never know when we might need it.”
“I can think of several things we're more likely to need than a guitar.”
“Such as?”
“A map.”
Debbie looked around. “Did you bring one?”
“No.”
There was a short silence.
“This is going well already.”
Pip laughed and started the engine.
Debbie settled back into her seat and looked along the road ahead.
“You do realise this is starting to feel slightly Thelma and Louise?”
Pip looked at her. “Don't be ridiculous.”
“Two women. Open road. No plan.”
“Yes, but we're considerably better behaved.”
Debbie stared at her.
Pip thought about it.
“Fine. We're probably considerably better behaved.”
“That's reassuring.”
Pip pulled away from the kerb before Debbie could change her mind.
A few miles later, with the roof down, the sun warm above them and the road opening out ahead, Debbie glanced across.
“So where exactly are we going?”
“No idea.”
“You must have some idea.”
“Nope.”
“Hotel?”
“No.”
“Route?”
“No.”
“Reservation?”
Pip shook her head.
Debbie considered this. “Have you actually planned anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Leaving.”
Debbie burst out laughing.
Eventually they reached a junction where the road divided in two.
Pip slowed the car.
“Left or right?”
Debbie looked at her. “You're asking me?”
“Whichever way feels right.”
“That isn't navigation.”
“It is now.”
Debbie pointed to the right.
Pip turned the car and put her foot down.
Behind them were timetables, reservations and all the sensible little plans they hadn't bothered making.
Ahead of them was an open road, a full tank, Debbie's guitar and absolutely no promises about where any of it might lead.
And for the first time in a very long while, neither of them needed to know.
They'd just follow the road...
