Swallow - Hirundo Rustica
The swallow, or 'barn swallow', is a common summer visitor, arriving in April and leaving in October. It builds mud and straw nests on ledges, often in farm buildings and outhouses, or under the eaves of houses. Swallows are widespread and common birds of farmland and open pasture near water. They are agile fliers, feeding on flying insects while on the wing. Before they migrate back to their wintering grounds in Africa, they can be seen gathering to roost in wetlands, particularly reedbeds.
The swallow is a glossy, dark blue-black above and white below, with a dark red forehead and throat, and a black band across its chest. It has a very long, forked tail. Often spotted perching on wires in small numbers.

Did you know?
Until the 19th century, people thought that the swallow hibernated over winter. Of course, we now know that it migrates to South Africa from the UK, undertaking a perilous journey, during which it is vulnerable to starvation and stormy weather.
Be vulnerable
Be raw
Say how you
feel without fear
of judgement
and without
worrying about
the response.
Ask for what
you want.
When you're true
to yours by
speaking your truth
you've done all
you could do,
that's enough
peace of mind.

A masked lapwing or spur winged plover, Vanellus miles, chick that I think was less than two days old. Unfortunately, the parents did not stay very close to it so I did not get a reasonable photo of the chick and one of its parents together. Its height was less than the height of its parents knees (see next photo). I kept my distance because masked plovers will defend the chicks and they have spurs on their wings with which they could attack.
Masked lapwings do not always choose good places to nest. They have been known to nest on railway tracks. This pair probably nested on the ground in the backyard of a house. They would often go onto quite a busy road and did not stop the chick going onto the road.
**********************************************************************
For many years, the warbler was a widespread bird in Europe, but its population fell sharply in the late sixties and early seventies. The cause is the drought of its African winter quarters located in the Sahel in West Africa. After this decline in numbers, the species appears to be recovering, but remains highly vulnerable to climate change.
The warbler appreciates hedges, bushes and open spaces, and is therefore not a garden bird. It is a regular migratory bird and it happens during its flights to visit a garden, especially in spring or autumn.

Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster
(Red-bellied Grackle / Cacique candela)
The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.
In the Winter, White Squirrels have the advantage ,as they blend in with the snow on the ground and trees. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the year they stand out and are an easy target for prey. ( raptors, foxes, coyotes and domestic dogs)

We had a shooting assignment in my camera club to do a photo series, with some limits. The required limit was using the same focal length in all images. The other one I chose was "in camera double exposure."
I have gone through a lot of emotional ups and downs in the past several weeks, and decided to do self portraits to convey my feelings, emotions and vulnerabilities.
So there are six in the series. I used my Lensbaby Velvet 56, and with each double exposure, I also moved while the shutter was open to create more of an abstract effect. I will be posting them, interspersed with my other posts.
