"Frankie Foo and the YoYo Smugglers" is a fun Ska band, who plays once or twice a month in the city. The 8, 9 or 10 member band plays love songs and dance song with weird titles like: "Don't Roll Those Bloodshot Eyes at Me", "Monster Mash", "Mighty Ruler", "Duck Soup". The band is super entertaining and has an almost a cult following. Sax player Toby Hughes leads the band for the last 22 years. Here Wham Gritty on steeldrum and Trumpet Roy are part of a band which also includes Thumbs, Skip, Shaggy, Gonzo and other characters. The personnel may be slightly different every time they get together, but it is always fun and the spirit is more contagious than Omicron latest variant. By the 2nd or latest 3rd set, everyone is on dance floor.

Last night I had the pleasure of working with the soulful vocalist, Melanie Moore.

A few quick pics I took of Sandra during our sound check before our concert at The Mesa Jazz and Blues Theater in Mesa, Arizona.

Everybody knows Green Day.

Green Day is an american rock band formed in the east bay of California in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990. Wikipedia.

I don't like this band but it is the name that I needed :-)

the pied currawong (Strepera graculina)

Searching for the source of loud melodies from treetops in Melbourne, I found this bird.

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!

Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.

Amazing how these birds are so brilliantly colored on their face, throat, and breast, yet be so well camouflaged on the rest of their body.

I followed this individual around for about half an hour. It sure was vocal!

Music live at Saturday night.

I feel lucky and proud that we have these musicians in Toronto. There is a group of young musicians, who were finishing their education during pandemic. With no outlet for their musical talent, they played on street corners, in parks and outside of the concert halls.

I heard them in these places and followed their career ever since. I feel like a proud parent seeing their kids succeed, even I had nothing to do with it. Some are not around anymore, but there is a core of about 30 young musicians who stick and play together. They are now playing in Jazz Bistro, Hugh's Room, Massey Hall, Koerner Hall, or in this case the venerable Rex Hotel. Matt Smith- trumpet/ vocals went recently to New Orleans to play few gigs. He was the leader in this case, but Max Simpson (bass) and Evan Miles (piano) sometimes lead their own bands, where Matt is invited to be part of the band. At this concert Matt Morgan (guitar), Taylor Maslin (on the photo with clarinet) and Ori Dagan (vocalist) joined in the group in second set.

Shawn is better known as leader of 'Sean Stanley Band', which can be solo piano/vocalist to a sextet. I know Shawn for few years, but only now is he getting some attention. He is one of the hardest working musicians in Toronto and from playing on the street corners, he plays at all the Toronto best jazz joints and hotel bars. That can only be attributed to his talent and hustle.

Excellent music live by pianist & Vocalist who has performance.

Bobby Carcassés now seldom picks up his horn, his main instrument, when he was younger. He played piano, sang and even danced. Bobby Carcassés is an 85 year old jazz legend from Cuba. The founder of the Havana Jazz Festival, Bobby has been dubbed “the Guru of Afro-cuban Jazz” and has played with heavyweights like Bud Powell, Jane Bunnett, Tito Puente and Kenny Clarke and of course with his countrymen Chucho Valdes, Carlos Emilio Morales and Paquito D’ Rivera.

At Havana Jazz Festival, he was the centerpoint of musical revue; a showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. Bobby was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1938. I had a pleasure to meet him after the concert, as some Canadian friends introduced me.

The lead female singer for Àbájade, Diambar, remains a bit of mystery. She reveals little on social media. Based in France, but probably born in Senegal, she sings with verve and is a perfect singing partner for Cyprien Corgier. The cool venue of 'Fabrica des Artes' (FAC) on the westside of Havana provided a sophisticated atmosphere and audience. Àbájade is a group of musician from Paris and at this concert; they were even stronger with the participation of some Cuban musicians. It was a party from the first note! This was taken on the last day of the jazz festival and the atmosphere was electric. 'La Fabrica' is definitely worth to visit even when there are no concerts. La Fabrica has rotating exhibits of paintings, sculpture and photography.

A red-winged blackbird singing.

'Silver Elvis' is a Toronto institution. Did not see him for few years, but he is baaack. He is part of almost every street festival that I attend, so perhaps it is not so much that he was not around, I just did not see him. Peter Jarvis has been an entertainer & performance artist since 1979, and he looks the same! I suspect that his Elvis outfit did not last 40 years. He is not just in Toronto, but world wide and not just Elvis, but variety of characters. Facilitating artistic mime, dance, clown, mask and music have allowed Peter to work extensively in film, theatre and television. Elvis died in 1977, but he is probably most imitated musician even today.

Her voice during the show was simply divine. She certainly does not look like the woman who is also part of the band Puscifer. :)

Irene Torres looks very young, but has been singing in Toronto for a long time. I've seen her first time many years ago (2009-2010?); and I thought she was just a teenager then (with The Sugar Devils). At the Old Mill Inn, she selected a program of her own and in homage to her root, Peruvean music. She came to Toronto at age 6, but only lately started singing 'en Espanol'! There was a lot of excellent music to choose on this great evening (24 bands! fundraising for musician union), but her performance is magnetic and we stayed for most of her set- With Jeremy Ledbetter-piano, Eric St. Laurent-guitar, Dhany Mario - voice, percussions, Matias Recharte-guitar, percussions.

✿ " When I was a little kid and soon after I had just arrived to Toronto from Peru, I was walking down Brock St., and my nose caught the familiar scent of the beautiful Madreselva (Honeysuckle) blooms. I closed my eyes and it took me right back to my abuela and my neighbourhood in Lima. And I was home."
