I find it necessary to take time to appreciate the ordinary once in awhile. Do not discount the beauty of the common Blue Jay or its type A personality. These birds set off an alarm when a snake would come too close to our koi pond. They are accomplished vocalists. Yesterday I watched one splash unabashedly in the bird bath, then sit on the edge and mimic the screech of a Red-Tailed Hawk. So much more than ordinary.
Rebecca is vocalist and trumpeter and performed in a back patio of 'Pamenar' which seats about 30 people (uncomfortably 😄) Michael is Rebecca's long time partner, so I purposely included him in the photo. Kensington Jazz Festival was back after forced hiatus, the attendance was about 60% of previous years, but the concerts were 100% wonderful.

Alex Pangman at her first performance in public this year. She had two lung transplants, so she is immune compromised and careful to stay healthy. She is a radio host at JazzFM and had mostly on-line concerts during the lockdowns and most of the last few years. It's a miracle that she is still singing. Last time I've seen her was in June 2022 (photo in my gallery). Her voice is unchanged even in comparison, when she had her own lungs in her 20's. It was really great to hear Alex Pangman performing live in public, and she was trilled too. The concert was billed as Kevin Ray Clark and friends and the New Orleans based trumpeter has fortunately excellent musician friends in Toronto. The whole weekend was full of great music in the old Gooderham Distillery, which became tourist attraction 20 years ago. It did not attract many Torononians in the last decade or so; let's hope this programming is a change for the better.

Alex Pangman performs a previously unrecorded & unpublished song written by singing legend Connee Boswell in the 1940s. This was finally recorded by Pangman in August 2019 in Toronto Canada with Drew Jurecka violin, & Nathan Hiltz guitar.
Alex is an actor, singer, composer and photographer, who brings you new tunes wrapped in old time feeling. He sounds like Sinatra; his mannerism is also from the 1950s-60s. I have seen him treating his numerous fans, who range from twentysomething to seventysomething, with kindness and respect. The vocalist was nominated for 2022 Juno Award. (Canadian Grammy). His band the 'Jazz Mavericks' include Jacob Gorzhaltsan-sax, Ewen Farncombe-piano, Daniel Botos-drums and Ben Dwyer on bass. At 'Tapestry' on the day it opened under new ownership.

Laura Hubert was vocalist of popular rock group Leslie Spit Trio. She later turned to traditional jazz and blues and is pretty good at that too. I may have heard her first time 20 years ago and quite often since. She is loved by her Toronto audiences and by musician friends in Toronto. Here she is with trumpetist Kevin Ray Clark who just arrived from New Orleans. The whole weekend was full of great music in the old Gooderham Distillery, which became tourist attraction 20 years ago. I had the pleasure of working with Linda last night at, Maxan Jazz and Sushi, here in Las Vegas. I also wanted to try my Canon 5D Classic with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM out in a jazz nightclub situation. It was a win-win situation!

Searching for the source of loud melodies from treetops in Melbourne, I found this bird.
From far north Thunder Bay, but part of Toronto blues since forever. He is a multiple Maple Blues Award winner and JUNO, longstanding association with the Downchild Blues Band 1979-2025! Gary Kendall is a Canadian bassist, vocalist and band leader, best known for being big part of Hogtown All Stars, The Mighty Duck Blues Band, and The Swingin’ Blackjackand. Gary Kendall Trio. I have seen Kendall not only with local bands, but also with many musicians visiting Toronto from abroad, they probably asked for him. On this photo he was part of trio with Tyler Burgess -drums and a guitar player at Union Summer music series.

The caption is the title of a hit that was sung by Glenn Campbell which was first released in 1967. "Gentle On My Mind" is still popular after all of these years and has been sung by many other vocalists. This song immediately came to my mind when I took this image at the Rose Garden in Spokane, Washington

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!
Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.
Teke::Teke was a bit surprise for me. One of the few late night bands (11 pm start), and surprisingly Canadian group with mostly Japanese faces and a strong, definite Japanese music (Eleki) influences. Hard to define for outsider like me, but they have a strong following. Vocalist Maya Kuroki is central, with Japanese theatre movements, or is it amine? Definitely worth it to see them. Not jazz, not blues, but one of the pleasant surprises of the festival. On the photo is also Yuki Isami and Etienne Lebel

In Montreal they have several jazz bands entertaining the crowds in the afternoon, before the stage acts starts. This year, Montreal based 'The Early Jazz Band' was one group I managed to see and really enjoyed. 'The Early Jazz' takes their repertoire from the New Orleans swing of the 1920s, 1930s-1940s. Pure fun. I seen them first time, but one of Toronto's saxophone/clarinet musician, who comes to Montreal every year same time as me, played with few of them in Toronto. Jean-Sébastien Leblanc - clarinet is their leader and Dominic Desjardins - banjo/vocals is core member of the group. Jonathan Gagné – drum and Mathieu Roberge – double bass performed on this day.

I remember Janice from about 20 years ago Friday's nights at Palais Royale. She was a diminutive girl in her early 20's with surprisingly strong, smoky, sultry voice. I did not see her since the 100 year old 'Palais Royale' relatively minor fire (early 2000), and the building was closed for 6 years. Janice Hagan sings now mostly in the Reservoir Lounge and at corporate events. Her vocals are heartfelt, and lively. The talented vocalist was part of Rex Sunday afternoon "JazzInToronto" Songbird Series. She was part of an excellent quintet and the appreciation of her mates was clearly visible on the stage. With Roberto Occhipinti – Bass, Al Cross - Drums, Eric Boucher- piano and William Sperandai - trumpet.

Despite the band name, I was not swindled. Jay Swinn with his friends played just one hour, but it was at full blast from beginning to end. The musician; songwriter, singer, pianist and producer is originally from Peterborough, active in Toronto, based in Austin, Texas last few years. J.J. used to play at Cameron with 'Double Cuts', who played earlier the same evening. There is always good music at the Cameron, 8 days/week. It was a full house, great atmosphere, so I stayed for the "Doghouse Orchestra", to close a wonderful Sunday night. J.J. Swinn-piano and vocals, Bruce McKinnon was on sax, Michael Eckert- steel guitar, Matt Coldwell-bass, Rudy Ray on trumpet, Paul Kolinsky- guitar.

Former guitarist with the USAF Jazz Band (Shades of Blue), internationally known arranger, guitarist, vocalist, song writer and teacher, Steve Cipriano is now entertaining audiences in SW Florida with jazz, blues and adult rock and roll music. I followed this individual around for about half an hour. It sure was vocal!

A picture from last night at, The Dispensary Lounge, here in Las Vegas as they celebrated 11 years of having live jazz.
I feel lucky and proud that we have these musicians in Toronto. There is a group of young musicians, who were finishing their education during pandemic. With no outlet for their musical talent, they played on street corners, in parks and outside of the concert halls.
I heard them in these places and followed their career ever since. I feel like a proud parent seeing their kids succeed, even I had nothing to do with it. Some are not around anymore, but there is a core of about 30 young musicians who stick and play together. They are now playing in Jazz Bistro, Hugh's Room, Massey Hall, Koerner Hall, or in this case the venerable Rex Hotel. Matt Smith- trumpet/ vocals went recently to New Orleans to play few gigs. He was the leader in this case, but Max Simpson (bass) and Evan Miles (piano) sometimes lead their own bands, where Matt is invited to be part of the band. At this concert Matt Morgan (guitar), Taylor Maslin (on the photo with clarinet) and Ori Dagan (vocalist) joined in the group in second set.
