Taken a few days ago here in San Antonio, Texas. Such a spectacular image of one of nature's extraordinary sunset's, especially when the clouds turn fire fame red.

The winds were gusting at 40 to 50 mph, which gave these clouds a swirling whiplash effect, this image was taken about 45 minutes before the storm was knocking at the door with hail stones, wind and lightining.

You can see in the distance the large cloud wall forming as it approaches.

June, 2008 Grand Canyon National Park (USA), South Rim

Taken about 100 feet east of Yaki Point (where the fencing is located).

Yaki Point is the trailhead for the South Kaibab Trail.

I arrived at Yaki Point on the first bus from Bright Angel Lodge - about 4:15 AM. I watched and waited. You know the sun will rise, but you don't know what cloud formations will be evident, or if the canyon will be hazy, misty, or smoky. It was a chilly morning, but the view warmed me up quickly. I walked back and forth across the entire point, taking images at different vantages. Most were not worthy. Then I saw this - the wait was worth it. For me, this is my penultimate view of the Grand Canyon, which while not giving much sense of the immenseness of the formation, delivers a very special ambience for me.

The Grand Canyon is my favorite place to be. I've been there 5 times since 2001. Every time I see something different.

The day prior, I hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to the Oh Ah Point, and then to Cedar Ridge. It is the most scenic and demanding of the trials into the canyon, for my money. Start your descent 1 hr before sunrise, bring lots of water, a headlamp, and hiking boots.

Imaged NEF with D80. Merged two JPG images of different exposure in Paint Shop Pro, then brought a TIF file into NikonCaptureNX2 for a bit of finish work. Sorry the metadata is missing due to the processing, but if you want more specs, ask.

The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), sometimes colloquially known as the Sparrow Hawk is a small falcon found in the Western Hemisphere. It is found in a variety of habitats throughout North and South America, and it is the smallest falcon in North America.

American Kestrels are widely distributed across the Americas. Their breeding range extends from central and western Alaska across northern Canada to Nova Scotia, and south throughout North America, into central Mexico, the Baja, and the Caribbean. They are local breeders in Central America and are widely distributed throughout South America.

Most of the birds breeding in Canada and the northern United States migrate south in the winter, although some males stay as year-round residents. It is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.
