A view of the French Gardens after the 'renovation'
You can view the entire Flickr Collection in the Save Duke Gardens group (Flickr Hive Mind)
Note: these eleven gardens are now lost, as far as it is possible to know. The trustees have permanently closed Duke Gardens. Saying "renovated gardens will reopen" was deliberately misleading and sloppy language that concealed the truth. Some sort of garden will be at Duke Farms. Doris Duke's indoor display gardens will not.
The glorious indoor display gardens of Doris Duke's Estate in NJ will be destroyed unless the Trustees are persuaded to reconsider before May 25th, 2008: see the Flickr group Save Duke Gardens. Please use the Save Duke Gardens web site to easily email your newspaper and the Trustees if you wish these gardens to remain intact.
These gardens are a labor of love and a work of art. Doris Duke spent years creating them, and would sometimes spend 16 hours a day working in them. They are being dismembered only 15 years after Doris Duke's death, on the 50th anniversary of their creation, by the Estate's trustees, who do not feel the gardens fit in with a modern Green vision.
Really.
The Trustees tell us the Gardens will re-open in a couple years. But what this really means is that a different orchid conservatory will reopen. Not this elaborate set of interconnected Display Gardens created personally by Doris Duke in honor of her father. They will be lost.

in about 17982, an 11-year-old boy named Ghanshyam left the comforts of his home in Northern India and set out on what turned into a 7-year, 8,000-mile journey touching the farthermost corners of the Indian subcontinent. During this 7-year teenage period, Ghanshyam was known as Nilkanth Varni. He would eventually settle in Gujarat and be known as Bhagwan Swaminarayan. His journey was one of not only sheer physical and mental determination, discipline, and discovery, but one that has, for over two centuries, inspired individuals throughout the world to apply the universal concepts of unconditional love, empathy, simplicity, and service in both ordinary and extraordinary situations.
This sacred image of Tapomurti Shri Nilkanth Varni is a homage to his travels around the Indian subcontinent for 7 years during his teenage years. Nilkanth Varni is portrayed in an ascetic pose performing tapas, or penance and worship with intense self-discipline. He performed rigorous tapas for six months, standing on one leg in a yogic posture, and mastered yoga during his travels in the Himalayas. His emaciated body glows with the aura of his determined posture and inward drawn eyes. The bronze murti is 49 feet tall to commemorate the 49 years Bhagwan Swaminarayan lived on earth while affecting social and spiritual reform in India. Large outdoor murtis such as these have been installed for centuries to express reverence and inspire spiritual living in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions.

The Second River, or Watsessing River, in the state of New Jersey in the United States, is the second main tributary of the Passaic River encountered while travelling upstream from its mouth at Newark Bay.
From its source in West Orange to the Passaic, it is approximately 5 mi (8 km) long.
Here's a little known fact - New Jersey has more cherry trees than Washington D.C. Branch Brook Park has more than 2,700 Japanese cherry blossom trees that burst into full bloom during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival usually in April.
Branch Brook Park is a county park of Essex County, New Jersey, located near Belleville & Newark. The park is noted for the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States, having over 4,300 in more than fourteen different varieties collectively called "Cherryblossomland".
The park was formally created in 1895 by the newly created Essex County Parks Commission, making it the nation's first county park. The famous cherry trees were the result of a 1927 gift from Caroline Bamberger Fuld, sister of department store magnate Louis Bamberger and widow of the store's vice president.
The Cherry Blossom Festival attracts approximately 10,000 visitors each April. Branch Brook Park has been placed on both the New Jersey (1980) and National (1981) Registers of Historic Places.
