In my book The Way of the Panda, I argue that there are two types of panda: the real and the virtual. We still know next-to nothing about the real, wild panda and the chances of seeing one are vanishingly small. The virtual panda, by contrast, is everywhere, usually a comical abstraction used to sell everything from fizzy drinks to electronic goods to cigarettes. No real pandas were harmed in the making of this photograph.
