Happily, not a single case yet reported in my entire county nor those immediately surrounding. Absence of people no doubt a contributing factor, social distancing a given...something I've been voluntarily practicing for 12 years..;-) Meanwhile, the marsh, also unaffected, continues it's annual thaw.

A visit to the Faculty of Arts, Department of Sculpture

Good morning friends. this is the last shot of my D80, she has accompanied me since 2007, has visited Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Iceland and Morocco.

After this shot it broke, there are no spare parts and it has been discontinued by Nikon.

She has been a great companion and has captured great moments and sweet memories.

She has died with dignity... finding maybe the first amateur photo of the COVID, hahaha!

R.I.P.

I take this opportunity to take a break, friends. See you in July, a big hug and take care! Be safe, and most importantly, be supportive and careful with others!

P.S.: The new D500 has arrived! Wow, it's a machine gun!

Having completed his PhD in Biochemistry, Brian has now begun post-doctoral work on the structure of the spike glycoproteins of coronaviruses - these proteins are needed for viral entry into a host cell, so his research should help with finding effective vaccines. Coronaviruses cause a range of respiratory tract infections ranging from mild to potentially lethal (such as COVID-19), so Brian is taking his work very seriously.

For Macro Mondays theme 'Plastic'. I spotted this strange little pink plastic object at my local charity shop and immediately thought 'virus'. I was very surprised that there were red/green/blue lights inside that came on for several seconds when the 'virus' was jiggled.

Piet Dolf and the "High Line Walk" in New York

A spiral orange heating element encased in a glass tube surrounded by a black, perforated, curved column (the really blurry circular foreground that creates the balls of orange, AND the somewhat blurry background that looks a bit like the patterns on soccer balls or viruses). It’s part of a table base that’s also used as an exterior heater during cold weather.

As shot, just cropped.

You've probably noticed it already... but for those who haven't... there's this viral thing going around Facebook at the moment where photographers challenge each other to post five black & white photos in 5 days... and to nominate one other person for every photo that they post.

So last week my buddy Mike Scott invited me to participate in the 5 in 5 B&W challenge. At first I thought it was a really lame idea... I only ever see the world in colour... so why should I post black & white photos!? I have been known to post the occaaaasional monochrome photo... but only when the colours are so flat that they don't add anything extra to the image.

But after thinking it all over for a few days... I decided that this challenge was probably a good thing... it would force me to try something different... force me to step out of my colour comfort zone and see the world in a more artistic way. So I dug deep into my archives and reprocessed a five image panorama that I shot at Namibia's iconic "Dead Vlei" way back in September 2009. After I'd processed with my standard workflow... I converted it to black & white with the Nik Silver Efex filter plugin. But no matter how much I tweaked the photo in Silver Efex... I still preferred the original colour version... damn!

But then I adjusted the opacity of the mono layer in Photoshop... thereby reintroducing a little bit of colour to my mono conversion. I stopped at 80% opacity... hey this works for me... sure it's not a true black & white photo... but it certainly ain't a colour photo!

Sorry Mike... I tried but failed.

I now challenge Jan Zwilling to post 5 black & white photos within the next 5 days.

This mural in Belfast predates the current crisis but it made me think of the Coronavirus, especially with the splatter on the ground!

Little did we realise that while we were enjoying everything Skye could throw at us, that the world would soon be facing very dark times.

This is an abstract photograph of looking up at a chandelier. Probably not a good idea to be under this thing if it falls…

A common theme of my photography is looking up. There is a lot that’s missed when you only look ahead of you for the shot. Whether it’s a cell phone tower, a building, a gazebo, or the Eiffel Tower, there is always a photo to be found.

From there, abstract interpretations can be made. Many people have commented that the first thing they thought of was “coronavirus” when looking at this image.

You can take it a step further and rotate the image to potentially transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Lately, this idea has dominated my photography. Please check out my albums for more!
