Some last days was sunny and warm, so nature was quickly awakened to life. Yesterday I found first violets in the park :)

C'est un petit papillon brun beige au corps trapu. Le Moro-sphinx possède une très longue trompe pour butiner les fleurs, souvent violettes, bleues ou blanches, en vol stationnaire à la manière des oiseaux-mouches. Il butine généralement le nectar des fleurs que les autres insectes ne peuvent atteindre. Il affectionne les sauges, les lavandes.

The violet-backed starling is a sexually dimorphic species in which the males possess an iridescent violet back while the females are brown. During breeding, the female will incubate 2-4 eggs (these are pale blue with reddish/brown spots) for 12–14 days. The male will help feed chicks until they fledge after about 21 days.
Happiness is the art of making a bouquet of those flowers within reach.

I am having a tough time with the computer so please forgive me. I can't seem to invite. I am using my daughter's computer now.
This is a species I've wanted to photograph for a long time. After a few attempts in the vicinity of Punda Maria in the north of Kruger, we arrived in Shingwedzi to find they are quite common in the camp, so shuffling around on my bum, balancing the lens on my knees, I set about trying to photograph one of the iridescent plum-violet males - males and females were collecting nesting material on the ground. The streaky brown and buff females (and juveniles) are nowhere near as striking as the males and can easily be mistaken for a thrush. These exquisite birds are intra-African migrants, found in much of sub-Saharan Africa, but we only see them in South Africa from October to April when they breed here in moist savanna or woodland.

The viola is a large family containing 500 species, they are on record in Greece from the 4th century B.C.
Later in Europe, it was discovered that a plant similar to a viola grew in open areas.
The plant found mostly in fields and amongst rocks in the Alps, hence Alpine.
It became known as a wild pansy (French: pensée). It might have been a romantic Frenchman who 'named' it...
A pensée can be a thought or a saying, short or it can be as long as a paragraph, a page, a poem!
Maybe he thought of his loved-one, dried one amongst some book he carried? Juste une pensée... lol.
These delicately fragrant flowers come in a wonderful variety of colours.
The dark centres in some flowers are thought to resemble little faces.
These are a smaller variety that I have in the garden, I could not resist photographing them in the studio...

The first violet of 2022 turned out to be a white one. I've known it as a harbinger of spring in classic poems but
I just learned that Australia used to have a 'Violet Day" to remember the fallen soldiers of World War I.
From now on, I'll think and take a moment to grieve about the victims of war whenever I see one of these lovely little flowers.
