My grandmother was married in March 1927. It was a real 'Roaring Twenties' party. At the 'Black Orchid Restaurant & Nightclub'.
Collins Street, Melbourne - where else?
So she had peach-coloured roses decorating the 'Black Orchid'. Lots of them. Many of them she grew in her garden at Toorak. And some came from the lavish gardens of the Blink Bonnie Ladies College, at Moonee Ponds (from which she had graduated).
The Blink Bonnie Ladies College is now known as the Lowther Hall (Anglican Grammar School)

From there she went on to become the first female 'Head of Department' for McPhersons, a farm machinery company. Sadly, as was the expectation of society back in the 1920s, when a woman became married she had to resign from her employment, especially if she held a 'promotions' position. There was no such thing as 'Maternity Leave' in the 1920s!
And so she resigned, and moved to Geelong to start her family. She had Graham, Ron and Norma. Norma was my mother!!
Anyway, I have transformed my 'Just Joey' hybrid tea-rose, growing in a garden at North Strathfield, Sydney, into a 1920s vintage version for the anniversary - coming soon - of Mildred's illustrious 'Roaring Twenties' wedding.
'Just Joey' is, arguably, a peach coloured rose. I think Mildred would have liked it at her 'Flapper' style 1920s wedding table.

For all their wonderful range of bright colours, Dewhurt's also put out an interesting array of shades too, reflecting some of the more dour colours worn before the Second World War. However dour the colours might be, they are often given the most wonderful names, like this one, which has the most delightful and appropriate name, "Chocolate".
When it was my birthday three years ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring examples from my vintage bobbin collection. In this case I am using two of my Dewhurst's Sylko Chocolate reels of cotton which date from between 1938 and 1954. The spools sits on some wonderful Victorian era floral embroidered trim in cream and copper brown coloured silk. They are accessorised by some Art Deco 1930s two-in-one reversible buttons made of Bakelite and two chocolate brown silk roses.
The theme for for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 7th of November is "shades of brown". Now, if you know me well, you will know that I am no great fan of the colour brown, however with the most delightful name of "Chocolate", these bobbins' shade is far more palatable. I'm sure you agree. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

It's high summer here in Sydney and the roses are gathering momentum. Their best display will be in Autumn, starting in about mid March 2025.
But this is my David Austin 'Golden Celebration' grandiflora, heritage-style, rose. It is flowering despite Sydney's wicked heat.

Been outdoor shooting with an old Fujinon 55mm F1.8 prime lens. The Lens is made back in the 80`s - can`t say the exact year but musta been the early 80`s. The Lens produces a beautiful bokeh and feels so solid and great to work with it! Of course this is a manual focus lens! The lens has a MDF (minimum focusing distance) of 0.45 meters.

I know it's a day early for valentine's day, but have just been messing around with shots using the remnants of the bunch of roses I posted a photo of last week.
I am also going to use this for my 116 photos in 2016 project, number 75 "tickled pink"

A beautifully aged rose, its petals curling inward with time. The warm amber and deep magenta edges create an elegant contrast, while the delicate texture of the dried petals adds a sense of timeless beauty. A close-up that reveals the intricate details of nature’s aging process, frozen in a moment of quiet grace.

so many days and nights in one life
and each day is a fresh new start
a promise
giving hope and faith
for making it... or holding up strong
through the cold of nights
and winters
when bloom is put on hold
and tears get locked inside
so long
the scars begin to show
the only one... up against that wall
still there
tinted rusty rustique... the vintage rose
out of season, but especially wanted
for right that

The soft, curled petals of a dried rose unfold like a delicate sculpture, revealing rich golden tones with deep purple highlights. Shadows dance between the layers, emphasizing the intricate depth and elegance of the aging bloom. A study of fragility, beauty, and the passage of time.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

See you next year :)

Love this design, inspired by Cotton and Crumbs. I made the 2 tier with the amazing Tracy James on her rose workshop.
Pink Roses and Stripes... a lovely keepsake or storage box painted for the shabby or vintage decor. Romantic and so very feminine, I love how this one turned out!
These are my all time favourite garden variety roses.
Made using Squires Flower Paste and dusted with Colonial Rose.
