Attack The Block was a film I first heard about listening to the now deceased Spill.com, when the film premiered at South By South West. It's the first film from writer/director Joe Cornish. With the amazing Edgar Wright as a producer.
In case you can't recognize him, the main dude, dude up front, the leader...that's John Boyega. Who's John Boyega, you ask?
Right here.
That's who. This young man will be one of the leads in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, coming this December. So, I thought it would be fun to hop into the time machine and talk about an old but fantastic movie from the UK.
What makes this movie relevant for a website like this, is that it's about urban street kids, living in South London, in their version of the projects (called Council Estates), they're kids who are basically poor and don't have stable home environments, so they're heading down the road of "being a product of their environment". That means lie, cheat, steal. Tell 'em, Killer Mike! They do whatever they gotta do to survive and get by.
But they're actually just misunderstood kids. They're foul mouthed and are the type of group to listen to underground Hiphop and dubsteb, they're delinquents, but not criminals. But they're painted that way, by society, by the media. Just like here in the states. They don't want to take the time to get to understand these kids. They're just "monsters".
Until some actual alien-monsters from outer space land in their neighborhood and they gotta fight 'em off. That really is the plot, and it's dope as fuck.
The movie begins with Sam. She's just a normal South-Londoner, walking home from a shift at the hospital. When these little thugs decide to intimidate her and take some of her shit.
Moses is the leader, as I mentioned before (Boyega). He looks like a tough Denzel Washington. He and his homies just decided to randomly picked her because she was walking by, and right then and there, an alien crashes into a nearby car, scratches Moses' face and they decide, like any teenager, "let's go kill it".
And they do. Until more start coming. And that's really when the shit hits the fan. They have to spend the rest of the night fighting these things off, encountering trouble along the way, by a drug dealer, cops, and even contemplating protecting Sam.
The movie is smart, fresh and incredibly fun. This is a midnight movie you watch with all your friends just to have a good time. It takes place all in one night, drawing a lot of inspiration from classic 70s films like The Warriors. Joe Cornish even decided to make some genuinely cool and original looking monsters. Don't believe me?
To quote one of the characters in the film, they're like big angry, gorilla-wolf lookin' motherfuckers.
So much of what makes Attack The Block so great is that it takes inspiration, and the essence of Spielberg, with movies like Gremlins, or E.T., or The Goonies. It's not a carbon copy, or a copycat, it genuinely stays in its own lane. What helps are those bad ass aliens. They're completely black, like black black, a black so black that they absorb all light and nothing reflects on them. And when they open their mouths they've got 100 sharp fangs, spiraling down their throat and it looks pretty vicious.
And in the movie, it becomes guerilla war-fare at that point. The kids know this neighborhood, their territory - the aliens don't. And there are some truly imaginative, fun sequences where they're trying not to get eaten and ripped apart. Which is something the movie does not shy away from. It gets bloody violent. And it's not afraid to kill off characters.
While the gang is trying to figure out where they can hide and how they can stay alive, Moses is questioning whether or not this was all his fault. In the beginning he starts out as irresponsible and by the end...you can figure it out. John Boyega plays him really well. And these are all great kid actors. They're older now, but they're solid in the movie. They're little crooks, with a code. They're not really being raised by parents - well, some of them. They either don't have a father, or living with their grandparents, or they're old or always out of the house. They teach themselves out on the streets. And in this crazy adventure with Sam, she's able to see a better side to them.
Something else that also kicks ass in this movie, is the soundtrack, which is primarily done by Basement Jaxx. So it really has an electronic/dubstep sound to it, while also incorporating some classic orchestral instrumentation, and it's all awesome. If you took this out of the movie, it wouldn't be nearly as good as it is now.
Definitely check Attack The Block out for yourself. Awesome Scifi/horror/comedy.
