La crisis global de la extinción de especies se acelera. Ésta es la principal conclusión que se puede extraer de la Lista Roja de Especies Amenazadas 2007 dada a conocer por la Unión Internacional de Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), que una vez más enciende la luz roja: 188 especies se suman a las 16.118 que estaban amenazadas hace un año.
Con el nuevo dato, queda aún más lejos el compromiso de las 191 naciones firmantes del Convenio de Conservación de la Biodiversidad, que se ha fijado como objetivo detener el proceso de extinción de especies en 2010. "La vida sobre la Tierra está desapareciendo rápidamente, y lo seguirá haciendo salvo que se encaren acciones urgentes", afirma el comunicado emitido en la ciudad suiza de Gland, donde tiene su sede mundial UICN.
Según esta organización, fundada en 1948, que agrupa a 84 estados y 108 agencias gubernamentales y cuyos datos son aceptados universalmente por la comunidad científica, ya hay 41.415 especies en la Lista Roja, de las que 16.306 están amenazadas de extinción. Esto se traduce en que uno de cada cuatro mamíferos, una de cada ocho aves, un tercio de los anfibios y el 70% de las plantas evaluadas, están en situación de riesgo.
La lista de las especies extinguidas conocidas se eleva este año hasta las 785, y otras 65 han desaparecido de la naturaleza y se encuentran recluidas en zoológicos o en cultivos. El ritmo actual de extinción «es por lo menos entre 100 y 1.000 veces mayor que las tasas naturales históricas», explica el informe de UICN.
"Los seres humanos son, directa o indirectamente, la principal causa de la declinación de la mayoría de las especies", añade el documento. "El cambio climático es una seria amenaza que puede aumentar los peligros" sobre las 41.000 especies sobre las que se realiza la evaluación anual.
Este año, el informe llama la atención sobre el declive de los grandes simios, "nuestros parientes más cercanos". Dos de ellos, el gorila de llanura y el orangután de Sumatra, se enfrentan a numerosas amenazas.
También los corales han entrado por primera vez en la Lista Roja. Una decena de especies se encuentra en peligro por efectos combinados del cambio climático o pesca insostenible. Como lo está el baiji o delfín del río Yang Tzé, que se puede considerar extinguido.
La crisis llega a cinco especies de buitres de África y Asia, cuyas poblaciones han declinado de manera alarmante por una combinación de efectos perniciosos, como los venenos o la pérdida de hábitat. Esta causa también es la que está situando a los reptiles de América del Norte en peligro crítico.
El número de especies que existen en el planeta es deconocido. La Lista Roja sólo se ocupa de aquéllas de las que hay suficiente información para evaluar su riesgo. De las 41.415 especies estudiadas 16.306, una de cada tres, tienen una amenaza más o menos seria de extinción. Pero como señala Craig Hilton-Taylor, el gestor de la lista, "sabemos que la estimación es por defecto. Realmente sólo echamos un vistazo a la punta del iceberg desde el punto de vista de las especies de las que la Ciencia tiene conocimiento".

"Human beings are directly or indirectly, the main cause of the decline of most species," adds the document. "Climate change is a serious threat that can increase the dangers" of the 41,000 species on which the assessment is done annually.
This year, the report draws attention to the decline of great apes, our closest relatives. " Two of them, the lowland gorilla and the Sumatran orangutan, face many threats.
Corals have also entered for the first time in the Red List. A dozen species are endangered by combined effects of climate change and unsustainable fishing. As is the Baiji dolphin and Yang Tze River, which can be considered extinct.
The crisis comes to five species of vultures in Africa and Asia, whose populations have declined dramatically by a combination of adverse effects, such as poisons or habitat loss. This is also the cause that lies at the reptiles of North America endangered.
The number of species on the planet is deconocido. The Red List is only concerned with the one they have enough information to assess your risk. 41,415 of 16,306 species surveyed, one in three have a more or less serious threat of extinction. But as noted by Craig Hilton-Taylor, manager of the list, "we know that the estimate is the default. Actually we look at only the tip of the iceberg from the standpoint of the species from which the Science is knowledge."
