Bull alligators don't bellow much outside of mating season (which ends in June), and even then, they aren't likely to boil the water with an infrasonic bellow unless they are seeking out companionship. But when I heard the unmistakable sound through the fog before sunrise on Armand Bayou, I paddled toward it and caught this sight just as I cleared the mist. It turns out I was between two large bulls, a fair distance apart, yelling at each other across the water. Why the infrasonic vibrations? Who knows; just another day and another novel encounter on the bayou.

Day 16 of 20 of albums that influenced my musical tastes.

The Wall - Pink Floyd

David Jon Gilmour CBE (born 6 March 1946) is an English songwriter, guitarist, and singer who was a member of rock band Pink Floyd. He joined as guitarist and co-lead vocalist in 1967, shortly before the departure of founder member Syd Barrett.

According to MusicRadar, Gilmour is "a household name among the classic rock crowd, and for a lot of younger guitar fans he's the only 1970s guitarist that matters. For many he's the missing link between Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen." Writing for the website, Billy Saefong stated Gilmour "isn't as flashy as Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page on the stage, but his guitar work outshines most for emotion."

In 2006, Guitar World writer Jimmy Brown said his playing was "characterised by simple, huge-sounding riffs; gutsy, well-paced solos; and rich, ambient chordal textures". Rolling Stone critic Alan di Perna praised Gilmour's guitar work as an integral element of Pink Floyd's sound. Gilmour's lead guitar style is characterised by blues-influenced phrasing, expressive note bends, and sustain. In 2006, Gilmour said: "[My] fingers make a distinctive sound... [they] aren't very fast, but I think I am instantly recognisable." Pink Floyd technician Phil Taylor said: "It really is just his fingers, his vibrato, his choice of notes and how he sets his effects ... In reality, no matter how well you duplicate the equipment, you will never be able to duplicate the personality."

I think my favorite guitar solo in rock history is the second solo from Comfortably Numb.

Happy Birthday, David Gilmour!

The otamatone is an electronic syntehsizer that is in the shape of an eighth note, made by the Japanese toy company CUBE. It is playe with two hands, one which controls the pitch usine pressure on a ribbonstrip on the tail and the second hand controlling vibrato and volume by squeezing the sides of the head to open and close the mouth. Like stringed instruments, pitch of the note is varies logrithmically along the tail (or neck). Amazingly difficult to play.

A statue of the Bee Gees by sculptor Andy Edwards was unveiled in Douglas, Isle of Man, in 2021. It is located on Loch Promenade between Marine Gardens 1 and 2 and opposite Regent Street. The 7-foot (2.1 m) bronze sculptures depict Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb, and the artist was inspired by the group's music video for "Stayin' Alive". The £170,000 project was commissioned in 2019.

The Bee Gees were a musical group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb born on the Isle of Man to English parents. The trio were especially successful in popular music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and later as prominent performers in the disco music era in the mid-to-late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies: Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. The group wrote all their own original material, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists, and are regarded as one of the most important and influential acts in pop-music history. They have been referred to in the media as The Disco Kings, Britain's First Family of Harmony, and The Kings of Dance Music.

BB King in concert, Queens University, Belfast, Sunday 9th of December, 1990.

There was a support band on before him called The International Blues Band, who were playing all sorts of great music, Steely Dan, JJ Cale and others. They were worthy of seeing in their own right and I was wondering just how could BB be any better than they were. They finished. Out came BB's band. They started playing......no real improvement over the support. Then BB came across the stage, strapped in and played a single note, did the vibrato and held it........the place went wild. A concert hall full of BB converts. His tone, his vibrato, his presence were indeed unique.

Snipe make a weird noise known as drumming, but it does not sound like a drum. It is a humming vibrato sound, a bit like a wobble board, popularised by Rolf Harris in the 1960s. You can have a listen here on Xeno Canto www.xeno-canto.org/595646 . During the early years of the twentieth century debate raged as to whether this sound was produced vocally or mechanically as wind rushed past the outer tail feathers.

The conundrum of how the sound was produced was finally laid to rest at a British Ornithologists Club dinner in 1931 when Sir Philip Manson-Bahr twirled a cork with snipe feathers on a string around his head and reproduced the humming sound. This was in the very public Pagani's Restaurant in London and apparently the whole room resonated to the sound of a drumming Snipe. Others had suggested it was the tail feathers that produced the sound much earlier but it was Manson-Bahr's theatrical demonstration that finally convinced all doubters. So the humming noise is produced by air whizzing past the outer tail feathers but the vibrato is produced by the wings flapping and varying the air flow across the tail feathers.

Photographing a drumming Snipe is not as easy as you might think as they are usually very high, and they display over a large area. Early mornings and late evenings in spring are when they drum most. This photo shows the stiff outer tail feathers spread wide as the Snipe tumbles through the air.

Other species of Snipe around the world also drum, but differences in the structure of the stiff outer tail feathers, and differences in the way the birds flaps its wings across the feathers, produces different sounds. The closely related Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) from North America was until recently considered to be the same species as the Snipe in Britain, but differences in the tail feathers and a different drumming display were part of the evidence for a taxonomic split. I managed to photograph Wilson's Snipe drumming and they clearly have two pairs of outer tail feathers splayed to make their different noise. Not one pair like our British Snipe.

Clavichord is a stringed keyboard instrument that was used largely in the Late Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras.

The clavichord makes sound when a key is depressed that raises a tangent that touches the string directly. The clavichord can play from a range of extremely soft to soft.

Because the tangent touches the string, it is possible to create a subtle vibrato on single notes by wiggling one's finger.

Three upside-down violins are hidden in the "Phonoliszt-violina" made by Hupfeld Company. It was very expensive and elaborate instrument that could only be found in wealthy private households and taverns. It was dubbed "the eighth wonder of the world" as it was the first device which convincingly mastered the automatic playing of the violin.

The secret is that only one string sounds on each violin, played by a rotary bow. The violins are movably mounted, allowing for expressive playing by means of vibrato and variations in volume. The violins and piano operate with perforated rolls.
