After exploring White Pocket for a few hours in the middle of the day, I went back to the jeep for a rest and a bite to eat. In the meantime high cirrus clouds moved in, so when I went out photowalking again towards sunset the light was soft.

These are some of the namesake white sandstone formations of White Pocket, in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, northern Arizona
I'd seen pictures of White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona from my flickr friends and decided I had to go there. I rented a 4WD vehicle in Page, Utah to get out there and it was expensive but definitely worth it to see this amazing place.
Wishing all my flickr friends health, happiness and lots of great photography in 2023.
I just got a few minutes of sunlight through a break in the clouds in the late afternoon at White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Of course I was hoping for a nice sunset but that didn't happen the day I was there, so I may have to go back.
Last time we were at the Wave, we met with a scary isolated thunderstorm. We only spent approximately half an hour wandering about this area and didn't even have time to look for the 2nd Wave before the rain started pouring on us. I still have an itch to head back. But getting the permit is quite a challenge. I might have to stay in Page for a few days to try my luck.
At a place like White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument you hope for a sunset to match with the amazing landscape. On the day I visited the sunset conditions initially looked promising as this shot shows, but it never lit up the clouds where I needed them to go with the landscape.... It was still a fantastic day, though, just to be out there.

Can you see the crocodile?
Rock formations and colors draw me and hold my attention--I don't need cute names. But when I first noticed this formation, the crocodile jumped out at me, and my mind would not let go of that first impression.

The historic bridge was finished in 1928 to provide an alternative to Lee's Ferry which was upstream. The modern bridge was completed in 1995 to enable handling of heavier trucks. The historic bridge is 18 feet wide and the modern bridge is 44 feet wide. The old bridge is used for pedestrians. Both bridges are more than 450 feet above the Colorado River in the canyon below. The Vermillion Cliffs are nearby. Wilbur is at the fence below.

Edgar the raven was an unexpected guest on our arrival at the marvellous sandstone formation - the Wave. Edgar was quite the opportunist - lingering within the heart of the Wave, in anticipation for permit-holders to drop their belongings and pause for photos in awe of the surrounding beauty. We watched as Edgar would swoop again and again, snatching bagels and biscuits and returning to its spiralling perch, as pictured.

Is it insane to drive 600 miles to take a picture?
I will call it passion, for now!
(others say I have a problem) LOL
How awesome is the world we live in? Do not waste any more time get out and see it!

Arizona is a land of great wonder and beauty. It's landscapes make for beautiful art works. There are unlimited places to visit and enjoy. The cactus spread out across the landscape creating iconic images that speak of 'Southwest. The sky at sunset is often brilliant with color. Everywhere you look are the Red Rock Mountains which glow with color at sunrise and sunset.

Paz."
