Gorges du Verdon in France is remarkable for its striking natural beauty, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Verdon.
We took my two cousins for a drive along the Gorges du Verdon yesterday. We stopped earlier in Moustiers for a coffee while a ferocious thunderstorm raged outside. Once it had abated we ran for the car and set off. The rain ceased but the lightning continued. It was spectacular (and a little bit scary). When we came back the same way about two hours later we were greeted by this. Quite the contrast to a few hours previously.

I took this at the end of September when we had two friends staying from London for a couple of days. We took them to the Lac de Sainte-Croix/Gorges du Verdon which is about an hour's drive from Cotignac. We rented a sedate electric powered boat and sailed along gently in the late afternoon sun. Bob was on board too and took to it like a fish (dog) to water 😊
The colour of the Verdon river is exceptional. Green, green-blue and turquoise.The river flows through a very deep canyon of 700 meters deep.

Sadly, this year there is a continuing drought in the region and the stretch of water you see is now reduced to a small stream in the middle. This shows part of the Lake of Sainte-Croix, the bit that goes into the Gorges du Verdon. The lake has dropped its water level by a whopping 18ft (6m).

The Verdon Gorge (in French: Gorges du Verdon or Grand canyon du Verdon), in south-eastern France, is a river canyon that is often considered to be one of Europe's most beautiful. It is about 25 kilometers long and up to 700 meters deep. It was formed by the Verdon River, which is named for its startling turquoise-green colour, one of the location's distinguishing characteristics. The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, where the river has cut a ravine to a depth of 700 meters through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon River flows into the artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (in French: Lac de Sainte-Croix).
