Scientific name: Pycnonotus goiavier
The yellow-vented bulbul is approximately 6-8 inches long. When viewed from behind, it looks very non-descript and can be mistaken as like other bird species. The back of its head, throat and tail are colored olive brown. The distinguishing features or field marks of the yellow-vented bulbul are the black stripe on the top of its head, broad white eyebrow, black mask-like rings around its eyes, white breast and belly, and yellow tone below the belly which is right before the tail. The yellow vent is what gives the bird its name.
It is not easy to differentiate the male from female because they almost look the same. The only sure way to distinguish female from male is during nesting. The yellow-vented bulbul builds a well-camouflaged but fragile, loose, deep, cup-shaped nest from grass, leaves, roots, vine stems, and twigs. The nest is untidy on the outside, but it is neatly lined with plant fibers. It may be built in a wide range of places from low bushes to high trees. This is a species adapted to humans and may even nest in gardens. The yellow-vented bulbul lays 2-5 eggs in February to June.

Steam vents are scattered over this fault-bounded block that partially slumped into Kilauea Caldera. Rainwater sinks through the ground and is heated by rocks which carry heat from the liquid rock below. Hot water then rises through fissures to condense in the chilled air.
