First Attempt a doing a vector portrait. Many layers later - I was able to create this image from a photo using photoshop CS2. Happy to receive feedback and comments - both good and bad.
Part of a series of gestural sketches of dancers in situ, done while watching dance students practice their craft. They are quick 1 to 2 minute sketches using a stylus and tablet with a laptop and Adobe Illustrator. All were done at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver, Canada as part of the Salon Series.
The Vector W8 is an American supercar produced from 1990 to 1993.[3] It was manufactured by Vector Aeromotive Corporation, and was designed by Gerald Wiegert[3][4] and David Kostka. The company utilized the newest and most advanced aerospace materials in building the W8s, which they said justified applying to the car the term "Aeromotive Engineering." Just 19 W8s were produced (17 customer cars and two pre-production cars, the prototype W2, and the two prototypes Avtech AWX3 and AWX3R, each with a mock up of a 7.0 liter DOHC TT engine). A total of 22 automobiles were produced by Vector Aeromotive over the life of the company. The car originally sold for $448,000 new, however on today's used market, they are available from $389,000 to well over $1.4 million depending on the condition of the car.

Technical blather: Canon EOS 75-300mm zoom, zoomed to 75mm and focused at infinity. Canon EOS 50mm f/1.4 USM, reversed and attached with a macro coupler, focused at infinity. I focused by moving the camera. Nikon SB-24 flash at 1/4 power a foot or two away, triggered with Pocket Wizards.

Photoshop's antialiasing is pretty disheartening when trying to make a precise and optimized pixel rendering of a vector logo.
This is a particularly cruel example: the lowercase "el" from Adobe's Sanvito Pro Light at 48 pt in Photoshop with the various antialiasing settings (view original size), plus a screenshot of same enlarged by a factor of 10.
Annoyingly, the so-called «Vector Smart Object» brought in from Illustrator (typeset the same glyph in Illy, converted to outlines, copy pasted) does not allow for finetuning of antialiasing. It just has one setting, which also sucks. How «Smart» is that? If you have a type-based logo and are trying to make a raster version, looks like you're stuck with either having it look too bold and with somewhat lumpy antialiasing, or trying to set the type again in PS and dealing with all the other distortions that may cause.
I wonder if there is a reason for the different treatment of antialiasing in type and vector objects respectively. Can this have something to do with hinting?

Another vector drawing using a photo I took for reference. Cleaned up the reflections for more of a vintage brochure kind of look. Also changed it from orange to red.
