The Church of St Petka of the Saddlers (Църква „Света Петка Самарджийска“ or St. Petka Samardjiiska) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is located in a semi-submerged shopping mall, and can be reached via the Serdika metro station.

The church - constructed on the foundations of a former Roman temple - was first mentioned in the 16th century. Today it is known for its mural paintings from the 14th, 15th, 17th and 19th century depicting different scenes from the life of Jesus Christ: his birth, his miracles, his suffering, his crucifixion, his funeral and his rise. It acquired its present name due to it being a patron of the saddlers in the Middle Ages, who performed their rituals in the church.

Vasil Levski - Bulgarian Revolutionary

This is the obshtina or municipal building in the heart of Kurdzhali, along with a statue of Vasil Levski, a hero of Bulgarian independence.

I lived in Kurdzhali, Bulgaria for nearly two years while in the Peace Corps, teaching English at a language-focused high school. It was a great time. Kurdzhali is a fun town, with a lot of interesting stuff to see in the surronding area. Well worth a visit if you should ever find yourself there -- and now, apparently only an hour or so to Greece!
