Today, if you are interested, I invite you to follow me on another trip to Bolivia, the mineral and arid world of the Valley of the Moon in La Paz.
This was taken in the Atacama desert in Chile. The wonderful landscape here is full of stone and sand formations such as these which have been shaped by the wind over the centuries.

At the gates of La Paz, the Valley of the Moon is a sort of desert of rocks sculpted by the elements, with lots of fairy chimneys.
The site is well laid out with trails on which we can discover this geological curiosity.

Valle de la Luna does resemble the surface of the moon. The Atacama desert is the driest place on earth and some areas haven't received rain in hundred years. The sand formations are formed by wind and water. In the distance you can see Volcano Licancabur.
We ran down these sand dunes and explored the area.
Valley of the Moon

Wadi Rum is one of the world's most beautiful deserts. More than just a sea of rolling dunes, this protected wilderness near Jordan's southern border is made unique by the dramatic sandstone and basalt mountains jutting out of its sandy floor.
Named "The Valley of the Moon" for good reason, the area's natural intrigue is endless: stunning rock formations, fascinating rock art, and a brilliant night sky combine to create a unique and worthwhile experience .

This was taken in the Valley of the Moon in the Atacama desert in Chile. Sunsets are a spectacular sight as the landscape turns every shade of gold and red before darkness finally falls

El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is located in the Atacama desert in the north of Chile. It has various stone and sand formations which have been carved by wind and water. It has an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon. El Valle de la Luna is part of Los Flamencos National Reserve.
This was the same image I posted yesterday. I would like your reaction to this B&W vs. the color image. Thank you.

It is largely without vegetation due to the high daytime and low nighttime temperatures.

•The sunset in the Atacama Desert is a terrific spectacle. First the desert and the mountains glow in different reds and then the sky. Suddenly everything is over - the sun is gone and it gets freezing cold.
Re-post of an earlier image with new post processing. Tonemapped with Photomatix then blended back with the original.
Recently we have had snow in lower elevations around Sonoma County and that goes for pretty much of all of California. Been a crazy weather pattern and there is still more to come. The past few months I've noticed that many of the trees that had burnt in the Glass Fire 2020 are showing signs of regrowth, which is great to see. This area is kinda special too me, so seeing the progress of rejuvenation in this particular area was more gratifying then the snow itself. With that said, the snow was and is beautiful. This isn't the prettiest image that I captured lately but is the most meaningful to me.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Wadi Rum, also known as The Valley of the Moon, is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan. Wadi Rum is Arabic for "Roman Valley", or "Valley of the Rûm", as the Greeks (or East Romans) were called in the early Byzantine era by Arab people, probably referring to Christian Byzantine monastic or ascetic communities in the area, for which they were also known as "monks of the desert", before the expansion of the Rashidun Caliphate.
Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabateans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples.
In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" after Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book have no connection with Rum.
The area is centered on the main valley of Wadi Rum. The highest elevation in Jordan is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high, located 30 kilometres south of Wadi Rum village.
Jabal Ram or Jebel Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, rising directly above Rum valley, opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower.

A year ago yesterday Sonoma County had a rare low snow event which is always awesome to see. I'm hoping in March of this year we have another one.
At sunset people flock to the highest point in the Valley of the Moon to watch the sunset. In the distance you can see the formation called The Amphitheatre. What looks like snow is actually salt flats from dried up lakes.

This sunset was taken in the valley of the moons. Went on a tour for my first visit and we climbed to the top of this ridge to witness the sunset. The second the sun set the tour guided wanted to leave. I was shocked we couldn't wait for the magic to appear. As we drove away the sky lite up and there I was watching it as I drove away. I needed to go back. The next day I rented a car and drove back to see if by chance I could witness that epic sunset. Climbed to the top of the ridge and as the sun set the entire sky lite up in 360 degrees of color. Worth coming back.
