I rarely get the opportunity to photograph Fox, so I simply cherish the moments I do get that much more.
Northern VA
Southbound Norfolk Southern manifest 11Z rounds a curve in Lithia, VA on Feb. 3, 2023, led by SD70ACe No. 1068. The Erie heritage unit was a treat, one that I hadn't shot before. Thanks to the folks that gave us a heads up. It was a fun day.
The shadows are creeping in and the days are growing shorter in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. Fall colors have been at a minimum so far this year, but they are starting to come in. Here a westbound intermodal fights up grade through Shawsville with a pair of AC44C6M rebuilds on point at control point Arthur. The start of some fall colors can be seen above the train.

The hamlet of Midvale, Virginia has never been more than a few houses clustered around a gravel road crossing the Norfolk and Western - now Norfolk Southern - Roanoke district. The north siding switch of the 6012’ siding beginning at milepost H175 is named “Midvale” while its south siding switch counterpart is named “Twin Falls”. In this area of the Shenandoah Valley, the route of N&W predecessor Shenandoah Railroad follows the gently descending path of the South River and Maury River from Vesuvius south to the James River at Glasgow.
In the fading twilight minutes after sunset, southbound Norfolk Southern manifest 15T (Allentown, PA to Irondale, AL) flashes past Midvale.
