The sinking of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898 was the main event leading to the Spanish-American War.

In late 1899 the remains of 163 of the sailors and marines who died in the explosion were removed from the semi-submerged ship. They were laid to rest with solemn ceremony in their own section of Arlington National Cemetery on December 28 of that year.

The mast of the U.S.S. Maine was removed from the ship in 1905 shortly before the ship was taken out to sea and sunk with military honors. The mast was then installed above a memorial in Arlington National Cemetery in honor of those who lost their lives when the ship sank in Havana, Cuba, Harbor.

Originally referred to as “the Hill” or “Kinney’s Hill,” it commanded the town. The main function of the Fort was as a place of retreat for guards stationed in the town. The British never made an attack on Morristown, however, and the fortified hilltop was never used. It was common for a small fortification such as Fort Nonsense to be built for the protection of military encampments and strategic military depots.

The Washington Monument was built between 1848 and 1884 as a tribute to George Washington's military leadership from 1775-1783 during the American Revolution. Its construction took place in two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84--a lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the American Union caused the intermittent hiatus. Plans for a national monument began as early as 1783 when Congress proposed that an equestrian statue of George Washington be erected. Although the Monument was authorized by Congress, little action was taken, even after Major Peter Charles L'Enfant selected its site in his 1791 Federal City plan. Washington's 1799 death rekindled public aspiration for an appropriate tribute to him, and John Marshall proposed that a special sepulcher be erected for the General within the Capitol itself. Lack of funds postponed construction, but Marshall persevered, and in 1833, he, James Madison, and others formed the Washington National Monument Society. By 1836, the society advertised for competitive architectural designs. The winning architect was Robert Mills, whose design called for a neoclassical plan which provided for a nearly-flat-topped obelisk surrounded by a circular colonnade on which would stand a statue of Washington in a chariot. Inside the colonnade, statues of thirty prominent Revolutionary War heroes would be displayed.

Soldiers had to build their own huts including surrounding trenches for drainage. The huts, made of log, were 14 by 16 square feet and 6.5 feet high. Twelve men often shared one of over one thousand simple huts built in Jockey Hollow to house the army.Inside the huts soldiers had a fireplace for warmth and cooking.

To understand why it's a great story, walk to the top of the hill in Jockey Hollow that held 200 soldier huts for the Pennsylvania Brigade in early 1790. Imagine standing there without your shoes on, without even one of the huts on top of the hill for retreat from the incessant cold. Try to conceive of something important enough to keep you on that hill for the rest of the winter.

The architecture of Alnwick hall reflect an English Medieval castle. It was one of the many mansions that lined Madison Avenue in Morristown. many of them have been torn down. These houses became the victims of the Great Depression

Built in 1750, the building is named Henry Boehm, a teacher, who lived in the house from 1850-1862. This is extremely simple pre-revolutionary War clapboard house. It was moved to Richmond Town from Greenridge and today an exhibit on early building techniques and restoration is currently on display in the house.

When completed in early 1918*, the 200-foot long mansion held 27 rooms with 10 tiled bathrooms. The English Tudor style was similar to many of the great houses in England. Heavy slate pieces some weighing more than 175 pounds were imported from Wales along with the skilled workers to put them into place on the steeply pitched roof.

Five generations of Macculloch's descendants occupied this impressive building for 139 years. In 1949 the Honorable W. Parsons Todd acquired the house. Mr. Todd, a distinguished philanthropist and former Mayor of Morristown, restored the mansion and gardens and opened them to the public. In so doing he preserved the structure as a handsome memorial to the Macculloch family, and realized his ambition to create a museum and art gallery where the history of Morristown could be preserved.
