Yesterday’s removal of an urban homestead in South Seattle. 85,000 lbs. of material was removed as well as approximately 30 vehicles. The homestead has been in place for almost two years. I went sketching today with Usk Italy Luciano Cisi. Cold, dark and cloudy day but the place was beautiful and empty. Although there wasn't much colors we had a great time sketching. Then we walked to Yucatán-style Mexican Restaurant El Portal for lunch. We were trying to go see the Norton Simon Museum but unfortunately it was closed for some construction.

Today was supposed to be an oven and Dick Heimbold called me up for lunch at Mi Piace. So I jumped on the Metrolink and got off at Memorial Park Station. As I walked to the restaurant I thought the view at the station was good for a sketch. So after lunch I came back around and did one. The waitress was a 23-year old woman and she's got both diabetics and arthritis yet she was all cheerful and inspiring. I have never met a GenZ like her!

Went sketching with Stuart today but I forgot to bring all my paint tubes. So I used whatever left in the palette. The colors are off because I was short of some colors, like yellow. Lunch at Versailles, Cuba cuisine.

Bert’s Red Apple in Madison Park is the hub of the neighborhood. Some mornings trucks are lined up and delivering goods. I think it’s a marvel how they fit it all in the tiny space. Despite the dark and rainy day, I went to sketch with Pete's group. Only half a dozen painters came but the quality of the works were outstanding today. We went to Golden Deli but the waiting was long and so we skipped to Southern Mini Town Restaurant and had a wonderful lunch!

After the Urban Sketchers LA event at Desiderio Park, I caught a LYFT to Glendale to attend another event with Barbara Field. One of the objectives was to test out how I could paint two oil paintings and carry them home on the train. The location this time was Doctor House Museum right next to Brand Central library in Glendale. I paid the $10 donation fee and tried to find a place to sit down sketching. Tables, and acrylic paints were provided but it was too close to the building.
It was a scene right out of Jane Austene's 1811 Victorian England "Sense and Sensibility" but with all the heat and sun of Southern California. Only Barbara showed up and unexpectedly two art students @frankidacre and @merciifa fully dressed in Victorian costumes were sketching. The organizers were very supportive providing us with drinks and snacks. I got a ride home with Barbara and it was a very nice sketching day.

The weather forecast said that today was going to reach 100 degrees. So I took off early to go to Fullerton to sketch with the Urban Sketchers North Orange County @usknorthoc. We camped around the area of Fullerton Museum Center and I found this beautiful spanish courtyard with a nice shade to hide from the heat. Here comes the problem. I sat in the dark shade and I could not see the true colors on my sketchbook when compared to the real scenery. So when I took the painting out under the sun it was way off. This is a very good lesson for me - Match the lighting on the painting .vs. the real subject matter. Lunch with the gang at the MONKEY BUSINESS CAFE next door. It was hot!!

Plein air paint out with my buddy @melpetersart. I stole some oil paint and paper from Mel and had a blast. We picked up some sandwiches early in the morning and enjoyed a quiet lunch together in the beautiful sunny ocean air. I stopped by the hotel next door and got myself a beer for $18 and life was good.

Here's how my Nature Journal ended up after day two of the workshop.
Pyramid Peak in the North Cascades was painted on location as a demonstration for my watercolor workshop students. On the hike back a bracket fungus looked like the steps to a little gnome house with a moss covered roof.
Li'l Beaver is the lone locomotive used by the Ballard Terminal Railroad to shift Rail Cars on 3 miles of track.
A larger rail company discontinued supporting the track because on declining customers. Now one customer is being taken care of by this small RR Company. I sketched this in graphite last weekend and just finished adding color. Gouache and pen with white gel pen.
I hated to leave my number 10 round cosmos Kolinsky sable watercolor brush underwater for even the few minutes it took to draw the sketch.
I love this spot for viewing sunsets over Gardner Bay. There's a new arrangement of colors every 20 minutes.
I pulled over for a tree today. I needed my Inktober Day 16 drawing and I caught it in the rear view mirror as I was driving home from my watercolor class in Kirkland.
