Commonly known as the carnation or clove pink, it is a species of Dianthus. It is probably native to the Mediterranean region but its exact range is unknown due to extensive cultivation for the last 2,000 years. It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing up to 80 cm tall. The leaves are glaucous greyish green to blue-green, slender, up to 15 cm long. The flowers are produced singly or up to five together in a cyme; they are around 3–5 cm diameter, and sweetly scented; the original natural flower color is bright pinkish-purple, but cultivars of other colors, including red, white, yellow and green, have been developed. The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers have a radial symmetry. The four to six surrounding the calyx, egg-shaped, sting-pointed scales leaves are only ¼ as long as the calyx tube. Carnations require well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, and full sun.They are used for medical purposes, such as for upset stomach and fever. Their fragrance was historically used for vinegar, beer, wine , sauces and salads. 25699

This morning this Sharp-shinned Hawk picked off a Starling from our bird feeders and landed with it on our lawn under a Cedar tree. The Starling put up a good fight for close to 20 minutes before it died and the hawk flew away with it. I took video of the fight also but it is rather gruesome. Marcia has been upset about it all day.

This GBH was screaming at a Red-tailed hawk that landed about 15 feet away from him. His response with all the neck feathers extended was rather dramatic, but got the point across. I was amazed to see how upset he was.
Well, it appears that some of my friends have had problems commenting on my pictures. When I went to check my settings it had been changed to only I could comment. This has happened before and it was reported to flickr. When I had contacted flickr about this I wasnt really given an explanation but only told to check my settings. Has this happened to anyone else? I used www.picnik.com to edit some of my photos and this could be the issue. But the first time it happened, I did not used picnik.com

A Grackle had landed just above this female Red-bellied Woodpecker, while it was munching on bark butter. For a while I thought it would turn into a food fight.
