After spending some time scouting The Queen's Garden Loop Trail on my 2nd day, I returned later that evening and ran across this unique looking tree and it reminded me of the photos i've seen of the old gnarled tree in Schulman Grove in the Bristlecone Forest, which still sits on my bucket list. This one turned out a bit grainy even though I used some light panels and ISO 1600 to minimize the noise but I thought it still looked interesting. I still have a lot to learn and this is part of the road to MW nirvana which still eludes me. I suspect it's the fact that I have a crop sensor camera when I really should be using a Full Frame for this kind of photography, or it could be operator malfunction and inexperience. I probably won't know until I upgrade, I'm holding out for the 6D Mrk II which should be out spring 2016. :)

BNSF 770 catches some sweet evening sun as it leads southbound M SVLSIN1 23 down UP's Angleton Sub, at CP Monsanto. This short manifest, made up mostly of steel coil cars and brand-new gondolas, is headed for the new Steel Dynamics mill in Sinton, TX.
This was one of the last train photos I took on my old Nikon D3100 before upgrading to the D750, and it's definitely a nice shot to end this camera's nearly 10-year run documenting trains.

Eastbound BNSF San Bernardino-Willow Springs train Z-SBDWSP8-03P charges upgrade through the Kingman Canyon. Most of the intermodal trains on the southern transcon seem to be powered by five six-axle units, as here.
As a big snow storm is approching us, they were calling for 25cm, now it's been upgraded to 40cm... where to put it all! I had to post this pic of my gorgeous Magnolia blossom to remind me there are wamer & prettier days ahead!
After a slightly late departure out of Brownville Junction, Job 1 is seen just over an hour late charging upgrade at milepost 19, passing the somewhat frozen bog there. A trio of former Canadian Pacific SD40-2Fs, all wearing the colors of their new owner, lead the way, with about fifty cars trailing behind them. A good running time and no switching means that they will arrive in Jackman around 1330, leaving plenty of time for us to chase Job 2 back east.
Heading upgrade west of Bealville, California, is a Union Pacific stack train on the afternoon of February 26, 2016.
Charleston's iconic upgrade, the Arthur Ravenel Bridge constructed in 2005. It replaced 2 older bridges constructed in 1929 and 1966. The 1929 Bridge rated a 4 on a scale of 100,while the newer bridge was rated "imminently deficient". Senator Arthur Ravenal was instrumental in getting the Federal funding for this beauty...
A rising sun is filtered in thin clouds as the westbound Rio Grande Ski Train climbs upgrade out of Leyden, Colorado, on December 30, 2000. Leading the train this morning is Rio Grande GP60 No. 3154.

Conrail SD40 6335 grinds upgrade from Altoona on the eastern slope with westbound manifest rounding the corner and into Horseshoe Curve in the late sunlight on the cold afternoon of December 8, 1985.
CP 5936 and 6258 creep out across the Kennebec at Moosehead, ME with a rail train in tow. The train had taken the siding to allow CP 250-5 to pass. Afterwards, they would pull beyond the road for Brookfield Energy, and would proceed to drop the last 8 or so strands of rail.

SOO 2201-A and 738 thunder upgrade through the rain and fall color on September 24, 1977. Train 911 is west of Engadine nearing Swift with 84 cars. Both units have a pretty good fade job going on with there red paint and while not common a number of SOO units exhibited fading red paint in the late 70's-early 80's.

After a brief stop in the yard at Orbisonia, 2-8-2 #16 puts on quite a show as it works upgrade towards Mt. Union. There isn't much in this photo to distinguish if this is 1943 or 2023. A truly magical place.
