We gathered at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University to talk about Unity 2012, a gathering of journalists to be held Aug 1-4 in Las Vegas.
We met for lunch and then gathered in the Cronkite Theater to find out what's on tap at this year's Unity event in Vegas.

1) The main focus of this shot was the bright flame in the middleish area of the photo. I wanted to capture the 4 hands and candles coming together and creating one beautiful flame. What makes this interesting is how four different hands and four candles could make one beautiful flame.
2)This photo was taken at f/7.1 @ 1/200sec @ 400 ISO. Reason behind this is that I didnt want to flood the image with light (that would happen if the aperture was 5.6 or lower) plus I wanted to get detail on the hands.
3) The main message I was trying to capture was again how four different colored uniquely crafted hands holding 4 candles could make something so beautiful and pure. This was during the candle light vigil for those bullied for their beliefs. It truly was a great picture for the time.
4) Don't be afraid to ever be too close to people and what is going on. You will never know what you might get if you don't step in and be nice about it.
LUNCH WITH GINA
In an effort to raise money, I am asking all of my Facebook friends to "HAVE LUNCH WITH GINA" by donating $10 towards the Unity 1000” project. As you all know, I am a huge animal lover and very passionate about the rights of animals and firmly believe that animals are not here for the entertainment, or exploitation of humans. Every morning on my way to work and back I stop to feed stray dogs and cats in the neighborhood (mostly around Hidalgo Park). After feeding them, I take pictures of them. My camera is like a diary. I take pictures to chronicle their difficult lives. I share them on the internet so others can see the needless suffering they endure. I share them in the hopes that people who are animal lovers will unite together to end this seemingly never ending cycle. I hope to bring awareness to everyone about the tragic plight of these grand lives so animal lovers can WORK TOGETHER to end the suffering.
For several years I have been volunteering with my friends at Barrio Dogs who have been working with me in Houston's East End Hidalgo Park, helping residents by fixing and vetting their pets and spreading the word that spay and neuter are the only solutions to Houston's animal overpopulation crisis.
To demonstrate their commitment to fixing pets as a method of controlling overpopulation and to raise community awareness, in 2012 Barrio Dogs fixed 205 dogs and cats belonging to East End residents free of charge. They are planning to repeat the spay neuter initiative, called “FixIt”, this year and sterilize 334 pets. Barrio Dogs has also joined forces with Corridor Rescue and Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward in a collaboration called "UNITY FOR A SOLUTION".
Unity for a Solution’s first priority has been to partner with other animal welfare groups to persuade Houston’s elected officials and the city of Houston to bring free and low cost spay and neuter to areas of Houston that are hardest hit by overpopulation. Often, pets that are not spayed or neutered produce unwanted litters that can end up on the streets; offering free and low cost spay and neuter to these animals’ owners is a first step in reducing overpopulation. Unity for a Solution also plans to fix a total of 1000 pets free of charge during 2013 with its “Unity 1000” project.
The goal is to STOP THE SUFFERING and I am hoping people will come together to help make this happen. Please help me/us reach our goal by having lunch with me. Thank you for your continued support !!
