Every year in New York City, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) conducts one of its largest protective security operations at the UN General Assembly. In coordination with other local and federal law enforcement, DSS provides personal security details for dozens of foreign dignitaries, such as the Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Iran, and coordinates activities from its Operation Center in Midtown. The USAID Signature Event highlighted the strategic and transformational partnerships through which the global community can end extreme poverty, complete the unfinished business of the MDGs, and achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Complemented by a “Marketplace for Entrepreneurs and Innovators,” the event featured presentations from USAID partners who have achieved ground-breaking results (or who have shown the potential to achieve transformational results) and individuals who have benefited from these partnerships.

Scenes from the Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC) Pledging Event held at UN Headquarters during the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly. 26 September 2018.

 

This event aims to accelerate the pace towards achieving equal pay for work of equal value, aligning with SDG 8.5 and SDG 5. One year after the launch of EPIC, global leaders, including Heads of State, CEOs of multinational companies, Heads of employers’ and workers’ organizations, and representatives of renowned universities and civil society organizations are coming together to publicly demonstrate their commitment to work together under the EPIC umbrella by making a pledge. Speakers include: Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, President, Iceland; Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain; María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, President of the General Assembly; Ana Maria Menéndez, UN Under Secretary General and Senior Advisor on Policy; Angel Gurría Secretary General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development; Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women; Guy Ryder, Director General, International Labour Organization; among others.

First Lady Jeannette Kagame attended OAFLA High Level Event that was held on the margins of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

 

The First Lady joined the President of OAFLA, First Lady of Ethiopia, Roman Tesfaye as well as fellow African First Ladies to discuss the theme: 'Global Partnership towards Harnessing the Demographic Dividend in Africa.'

 

The First Lady took part in a panel discussion that explored the theme: 'Implementing the AU Roadmap to Harness the Demographic Dividend in Africa: Ending AIDS by 2030.'

 

The event was held on 19 September 2017.

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) in New York City is the largest regularly scheduled diplomatic gathering in the world and requires comprehensive coordination between local, federal, and international security organizations. DSS sets up and staffs a temporary Dignitary Protection Operations Center to coordinate DSS support for the event.
