The Łódź Underground Cathedral on the Stoki Hill is one of the most mysterious and inaccessible places to visit in Łódź. It was built in the early 20th century as a key element of the modern water supply system designed by English engineer William Heerlein Lindley. The reservoirs, located on Stokowski Hill, function as a natural water tower—the difference in elevation between them and the lowest point of the Łódź water supply network reaches almost 100 meters.

Thanks to this solution, water has been delivered to Łódź homes solely by gravity for over a hundred years. Each reservoir measures 60 by 60 meters, and their vaults are supported by 81 columns and 100 domes. The entire structure was designed to withstand the pressure of 60,000 tons of water. They are normally closed to visitors. Such an opportunity comes along only every few years.
