It was a complete surprise seeing this Swallowtail because I thought I had missed their season. They have normally died by mid July. It is fair to say this one has seen better days!.
This is our largest native butterfly and also one of our rarest. In the Uk it is confined to the fens of the Norfolk Broads in East Norfolk. My first UK shot of one.

The majority of my UK shots, this included, were possible thanks to my job. I work for an Event Support co and do shows all over the UK. In fact the white blob along the road is my van!
I want to take a moment to thank all of you who take the time to visit my account here on flickr. I appreciate all the support and without you, I literally would not have had the opportunity to go to South Africa last month.
You see, one of the vice presidents of the Photographic Society of South Africa, Johann van der Walt, originally invited a photographer from the UK. Unfortunately, the guy in the UK shot Canon, and Nikon wasn't exactly keen on sponsoring a photographer who doesn't even use their equipment. As luck would have it, Johann went home and flipped through his (then) new issue of American Photo...the Nov/Dec 2009 issue to be exact. That issue featured me and two other flickr photographers. I got an email from Johann shortly after, inviting me to come to South Africa. So you see, flickr helped me expand my horizons and go on a wonderful trip and gain new experiences.
Flickr is you. It is me. It is all of us. And it is social. But like all things social, there are up sides and down sides. I think it's important to focus on the positive aspects. So thank you once again. And you never know, your opportunity could be next! Keep shooting!

This swan decided to take off at just the right moment (or did I decide to shoot at just the right moment?). Whatever… it feels like a nice shot.
Taken in Devon, UK. Shot with my newly dusted down Richomatic 225. I'm so glad I dug this camera out of my attic. It is such a different experience shooting with a TLR. It takes time to compose the shot, it takes time to work out the meetering, and it takes me a good few minutes to fiddle with the focus. But I do love the patience required to get a good shot with this camera. 'Slow photography.'
