The bar of The Glebe Hotel, on the corner of Glebe Street and Aqueduct Street in Stoke, a grade II listed building originally built in 1834.
Much work has been carried out to renovate this pub, now a Joule's brewery house, including the restoration of the William Morris leaded glazing by Paul Georgiou, a craftsman based in Erdington.
Excuse the quality of the shot, I was cold and hungry (waiting for my lunch), and was swiftly disposing of a beautiful pint of Slumbering Monk!
The red cross that is seen in the glazing is the company trade mark which has been taken from the cross which was put onto each barrel as a blessing by the Augustinian Monks who first brewed these beers in Stone, Staffordshire, dating back to the twelfth century.
A goodbye to interesting 1960's architecture as yet another council housing estate is demolished.

After a long period of premeditation, extending over years, the Great Project to archive my "back catalogue" of negatives is underway. The dining table is out of commission for the foreseeable future. The mighty enterprise applies only to my 35mm era, which lasted from December 1973 until the Eight Wasted Years (2002-10) of my digital period. I continue to use 35mm occasionally as a change from medium format.
So far it's gone better than I dared hope. This morning, at the conclusion of only a third session, I arrived at May 1974. Admittedly this early part of the job has been simplified because the first six months'-worth of colour negs were on Kodacolor X, easily distinguished by its "orange" look from the brownish replacement, Kodacolor II. May 1974 was about the time Kodacolor X disappeared from the shops and, indeed, I think I can see the first of the Kodacolor IIs looming ahead in the "parallel" boxes of prints, used for reference.
I had begun using 35mm after buying a new Praktica LTL on the instalment plan from Mrs Honeybourne's Grattan catalogue. During the decade or so between starting work and first buying a house I was relatively wealthier than ever before or since, and I could have gone out and bought a camera from a shop. Self-consciousness prevented me; an SLR was a big step up from my old prewar Coronet Cub and I would have been too embarrassed to disclose, to a supercilious shop-assistant, my lack of familiarity with more advanced cameras. Yes, silly I know, but that was the way my mind worked ... and still does to a lesser degree.
The new camera emboldened me to try colour film and this is a shot from the very first colour film I ever used. It was Saturday 22nd December 1973 and I'd gone out after work, probably with some idea ...like every newcomer to colour... of getting some snaps of a sunset. Not a bad result considering how poor the light must have been. This row of Georgian houses at Hambrook, just north of Bristol, is little changed; but, well, you know the kind of thing ...sort of smartened up, blandified and tidy. I imagine they must be "listed", for there are no uPVC windows; all woodwork is a uniform white, however, as though aspiring to be plastic. Smooth render throughout and an outbreak of pink masonry paint, as though this were Suffolk. The house off right appears to have lost its railings, of early 20th century vintage and perhaps considered inauthentic. They may still be there, smothered in greenery. Tall hedges, for bourgeois "privacy", obscure these pleasing frontages from the eyes of the passer-by. I commend the owner of the single exception.
Windows are one of the essential parts of any house, as they not only provide ventilation but also ensure safety and security. The type of window you choose can significantly impact the comfort of your home, especially during different seasons. uPVC windows are increasingly becoming popular as they offer numerous benefits, including energy efficiency and versatility. This blog will explore why uPVC windows are suitable for all seasons.
What are uPVC windows?
uPVC windows are made from a plastic material called unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. uPVC is a durable, low-maintenance material resistant to rotting, corrosion, and weather damage. It has become popular for window frames because of its energy efficiency, durability, and versatility. uPVC windows are available in various styles, colors, and designs, making them a suitable option for any home.
Why are uPVC windows suitable for all seasons?
Energy efficiency
uPVC windows are excellent insulators, which means they can help maintain your home warm during the winter and cool during the summer. The insulation properties of uPVC windows come from the multi-chambered frames, which trap air and prevent heat loss or gain. This makes them an ideal option for homeowners who want to decrease their energy bills and carbon footprint.
Durability
uPVC windows are incredibly durable and long-lasting. They are resistant to weather damage, corrosion, and rotting, which means they can withstand extreme weather conditions. Unlike wooden windows, uPVC windows do not require regular maintenance or painting, making them a cost-effective option for homeowners.
Versatility
uPVC windows are available in various styles, colors, and designs, making them a versatile option for any home. Whether you have a traditional or contemporary home, uPVC windows can be tailored to suit your preferences. Additionally, uPVC windows can be customized to fit any size or shape of the window frame to fit your home perfectly.
Security
uPVC windows are incredibly secure, which can help maintain your home safe from intruders. The frames of uPVC windows are designed to be strong and durable, making them difficult to break. Additionally, uPVC windows have multipoint locking systems, which deliver additional security for your home.
Sound insulation
uPVC windows are excellent at sound insulation, which can help reduce noise pollution from the outside. This is especially important if you live in a busy area or near a main road. uPVC windows have double or triple-glazed panes, which reduce noise by up to 70%.
Weather resistance
uPVC windows resist extreme weather conditions, making them ideal for all seasons. They are waterproof, so they can withstand heavy rain without rotting or warping. Additionally, uPVC windows are resistant to UV rays so they won't fade or crack in the sun.
Easy to clean
uPVC windows are incredibly easy to clean and maintain. Unlike wooden windows, uPVC windows do not require regular maintenance or painting. They can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and some soapy water.
Conclusion
uPVC windows are an excellent choice for homeowners who want to ensure their home is comfortable and secure throughout the year. They offer numerous benefits and durability, including energy efficiency, versatility, and sound insulation. uPVC windows are also resistant to extreme weather conditions, making them suitable for all seasons. If you are looking for a cost-effective, low-maintenance, and stylish option for your home, uPVC windows are worth considering.

If you're in the market for new windows, uPVC windows are popular due to their durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance requirements. However, choosing the right ones for your home can be overwhelming with so many different types of uPVC windows available. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the key considerations to help you make an informed decision.
Step 1: Determine Your Budget
Before you begin your search, it's essential to determine your budget for new windows. This will help you constrict your options and prevent you from overspending. Remember that while uPVC windows may cost more upfront, their energy efficiency can lead to long-term cost savings on your energy bills.
Step 2: Consider Your Home's Style
The style of your home should play a role in your window selection. For example, traditional homes may benefit from double-hung or casement uPVC windows, while contemporary homes may look best with sliding or awning uPVC windows. Consider your home's architectural style when selecting your new windows to ensure they complement your home's overall look and feel.
Step 3: Evaluate Your Climate
Your climate can also influence the uPVC windows that will work best for your home. For example, if you live in colder weather, double-paned or triple-paned uPVC windows may improve energy efficiency and keep your home warm. In warmer climates, low-E glass windows reduce heat transfer.
Step 4: Determine Your Window Configuration
The configuration of your windows refers to how they open and close. Popular uPVC window configurations include single-hung, double-hung, casement, sliding, awning, and hopper. Consider your preferences for ventilation and ease of use when selecting your window configuration.
Step 5: Choose Your Glass Type
The type of glass you choose can also impact the energy efficiency of your uPVC windows. Options include double-paned, triple-paned, low-E, and tempered glass. Double-paned or triple-paned glass can improve insulation, while low-E glass can reflect heat to keep your home cooler in the summer.
Step 6: Consider Additional Features
In addition to the above factors, there are several additional features you may want to consider when selecting your uPVC windows. For example, security features such as reinforced locks can provide peace of mind, while noise-reducing glass can help keep your home quiet. Consider decorative options such as grids or decorative glass to enhance the look of your windows.
Step 7: Research Window Manufacturers and Installers
Finally, it's crucial to research window manufacturers and installers to ensure you're selecting a reputable company for your new windows. Look for manufacturers with a strong reputation for quality and durability, and consider reading online reviews from previous customers. When selecting an installer, choose a company with experience installing uPVC windows and a strong track record of customer satisfaction.
Conclusion
Choosing the right uPVC windows for your home needs a careful review of several factors, including your budget, home's style, climate, window configuration, glass type, and additional features. By following this step-by-step guide, you can feel confident in your decision and enjoy the many benefits of durable, energy-efficient uPVC windows for years to come.

ipvc everybody bloody upvc. Why? You try buying a door in the UK that isn't made out of plastic. Environmentally friendly? Saddam Hussein was more environmentally friendly than this stuff. At least he was biodegradable.
Someone, somewhere, has made loads of money by convincing people that what they really really want is a boring white front door made out of plastic, and if you don't get one the value of your house will go down.
So, do you think I have a bit of a downer about going back to England? Maybe...
This is a three picture stitch to try and make the door a bit more interesting.

Blackrod Junction signal box located by the Down Main line to the north of Blackrod railway station controlling the junction for the Horwich branch. Saturday 23rd April 1988
Horwich Junction signal box was a Gloucester Wagon Company standard design fitted with a 34 lever Gloucester Wagon Company frame which was opened in 1881 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The signal box was renamed Blackrod Junction but it is unclear whether the name changed before or after a replacement 37 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame was installed circa. 1891. The signal box was refurbished with uPVC cladding and windows in early 2009 (work started on 24th January and was completed in March 2009) and was scheduled to close on 20th January 2013. However the closure and associated work was postponed due to an official reason of extreme weather conditions, closure took place at 02:00 hours on 10th February 2013 with an official closure date of 11th February 2013 when the new signalling controlled by Manchester Piccadilly signal box was commissioned, and the signal box was demolished on 2nd June 2013
The signal box carries a British Railways London Midland Region maroon enamel nameplate and has replacement windows in the end of the box. The 2x2 pane operating floor windows do not have the curved framing at the head, as can just be made out on the windows at the front and below them is a row of fixed single pane windows which are a non standard size. Also missing is the far end roof finial
Located in front of the signal box in the six-foot is 10 signal (set back down main to up branch), a London Midland and Scottish Railway 1941 type standard dwarf signal
