A composition where text loses its original structure and transforms into a chaotic, fragmented visual flow. Words break apart, overlap, and distort, creating an experience that oscillates between readability and abstraction. The image suggests how language can fracture under certain conditions, shifting from pure communication into form, rhythm, and visual noise.
It Comes in Waves (2025) by Ben Johnston invites viewers to reflect on water as both a connector and a force of change. The scattered yellow letters rise and fall with the currents of Lake Ontario, mirroring the transient, rhythmic nature of emotion, memory, and time.
Installed along Toronto’s Harbourfront, the work transforms the lake’s surface into a shifting landscape of language and reflection—where words become part of the water’s movement, arriving and receding like waves themselves.
