Winter Morning, Denver Metro Area, Colorado
I watched this red-tailed hawk perched in this tree for about two hours. It remained in this same place the entire time. It constantly looked about its territory.
Somehow the hawk didn't seem to be too bothered by the antics of these assorted birds. They took turns populating this tree alongside this hawk.
It was a cold morning after a night of nearly continual snow. For whatever reasons, such conditions often seem to change up these birds' routines.
Two hours worth of hanging around a cemetery at night, 200 odd images stacked in Startrails, the Church was painted with a Speedlite.
A fine morning in owl country, after yesterdays good fortune of spotting five owls as I travelled, my daughter off work for the day requested we go back to find them this morning. Lucky enough to find two from yesterday, we were able to find four others within a two hour stretch, for a total of six birds, two male and four females. It was an awesome sight on a freezing cold morning with everything covered in white frost and the beautiful January sunshine.
A composite of six photographs taken from 8:45 pm (on the left) to 10:45 pm (on the right).
The exposures range from 1/125 of a second @ f8 to 2 seconds @ f5.6. Anything beyond 2 seconds resulted in a blurry moon.
Oh--and it was cold.
A few words to explain to my wonderful and dear Flickr Friends, why I labelled this photo of the beautiful koi a Rosh HaShanna Fish Special!
Wednesday night marks the beginning of Rosh HaShannah, or Rosh Hashanna, marks The Jewish New Year. In Hebrew, "rosh" means head and "ha shanna" means the year. as commanded, we assemble to give praise and to ask haShem for forgiveness as we pledge our repentance for transgressions and omissions against people and the holy one. We vow to return and start anew.
Part of the service, based on legend, is taking breadcrumbs to bodies of living fresh or salt water with fish. There we pray for forgiveness to HaShem, and throw breadcrumbs into the water. In the lake at Fort Lowell Park, where I take pictures of ducks and Great American Egrets, the fish never get the breadcrumbs;)) In the koi pond they might.
That's why Sylvia wrote: "With these photos of fish, water ....... how not to see a good omen, Blessed Be The Name (of The Lord)" I would like to send, C.B., to you and all yours a Shana Tova, Ou, Gamar Hatima Tova."
Which is Hebrew shorthand for "A Good New Year, and, May You Be Well Sealed In The Book of Life."
Summer's end, and the beginning of the harvest season, and the restart of school activities is the perfect time for the Real New Year, not the pagan winter solstace when it's already been cold and bleak for months.

Today I returned home to the isthmus after a couple days away, and while I enjoyed my time away I knew that I needed to get home as my photos were lacking faces and stories to go along with them. After dealing with on and off showers during my drive home from the Dells, I was pleasantly surprised to find partly cloudy skies in Madison. My friend John was willing to get out and snap some photos so we departed shortly after three o'clock this afternoon to find great photo ops! We ventured up and down State Street a few rounds over and eventually worked our way to the Memorial Union. While there were plenty of people basking in the warm summer sun, I just was feeling rather uninspired as the people here seemed to interested in themselves to approach for a stranger photo.
As we walked back up State, we took a corner and ended up atop the Monona Terrace. As I looked down I was greeted with fisherman a plenty and knew in that instant I needed to find a fisherman to snap a photo of.
Taking the elevator down I approached a few guys fishing but didn't get the vibe that they wanted to be disturbed, so when John and I were nearing the end of the bike path I saw this man. I asked him if he had caught anything to which he responded "a few," from here we began to talk of the weather and it's impact on the fishing situation on the lake. Turns out Luigi (as told by him and his nametag on his shirt) made the two hour drive from Chicago just to fish the beautiful lakes of the isthmus. During this long standing tradition of 14 years Luigi has always loved Madison and the surrounding area, most of the lakes are free of being overly populated with fisherman on shore. He expressed must disgust at the parents who put their children on the ledge on the Terrace as it's not a safe place to be, and even told John and I of the time when he saved a little boys life. The boys mother had set him on the ledge and as he was looking around he fell backwards into the water, Luigi's gut told him to jump in and save the boy who was barely old enough to swim. While the mother seemed ungrateful for the random act of kindness I believe that such acts should not go unnoticed and thus why I bring it up in my stranger story for Luigi.
During our conversation I aslo learned that Luigi has a 25 fish quota each time he comes to Madison, and although the lack of bites today has kept that strong in the fourteen years he has been fishing the isthmus. I told him of my 365 project and the 100 more strangers and he was more then happy to be included. "Unless you've got something to hide you shouldn't have a problem with a stranger taking your photo" he told me, which is very true! A true to life good hearted man, Luigi is a regular at/near the Monona Terrace fishing on the weekends so if you see him don't hestitate to say hello and meet a new stranger. Be sure to check out the 100 strangers official flickr group to see more awesome photos with great stories to go with.

Another family recipe which my mother only made for bake sales and Christmas. We made some today. It takes two hours in the oven, and about a half hour more ahead of time popping the corn and preparing the caramel. Worth it though - you won't want to settle for the store bought kind again.
Caramel Corn
1 1/2 c salted butter
3 cups light brown sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
5 quarts popped popcorn (22 cups from about 1 1/2 cups unpopped kernels)
Pop popcorn in small batches, making sure to sift out the unpopped kernels. Pour popcorn into a large oven safe bowl or big pan that has been oiled lightly.
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. In a large pot melt butter. Add sugar, syrup & salt. Bring to a boil stirring to keep anything from burning on the bottom. Once boiling let boil five minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and stir in soda and vanilla. The mixture then will froth up, so this is why you use a bigger pot than you might think you need. Stir until soda and vanilla is mixed in and then pour evenly over the big pan of popcorn and gently toss the popcorn like you would a salad until most of the popcorn is covered. Don't get too rough or you just end up with crumbles.
Put pan into the heated oven and every 20 minutes pull out and stir the popcorn again. The slow heat keeps the caramel from hardening, gets the excess moisture out, and makes for a perfect glaze when finished. After two hours of this, take out caramel corn and let cool. And be sure to try a little bit still warm. It's so very good.
Once very cool you can store it in any airtight container or ziplock bags.
Options: Want nuts? Stir two or three cups of peanuts or whatever mix of nuts you like into to the caramel just before you're pouring it over the popcorn. There's plenty of caramel in the recipe to allow for the addition.
Makes a nice big amount that you can give out as hostess gifts this season, or take a big bowl to a potluck style party or sports party. It goes over very well and it is quite affordable to make (unless you add very expensive nuts).
You can see another photo of this recipe here to get an idea of the finished product.

We are on the plane, heading to Florida to meet up with my good Flickr buddy Shelba. This shot is the only thing I took today which is not horribly blurry.
The things we do to keep the children quiet and amused while in the air for Two. Long. Hours. One day I shall drive these children in a car with no air conditioning and no DVD player and no game boys and no iPods and we shall drive for 24 hours in two days and I will watch their eyes roll into the backs of their tiny overstimulated heads with some amusement. When I am not crying.
[I did not get online once while at Disney. Disney is exhausting. At least our version of Disney. Plus stinkin' Disney has not yet embraced wireless (hello?) and I was too tired to drag my sorry butt with the laptop into the livingroom to plug into the blue cord. So I am going to catch up with 365 over the next several days. Don't want to inundate the stream with my sickly vacation shots. My brain was on vacation too you know.]

I'm all happy and rosy after a four or five mile hike at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio with the HikeOhio! Meetup group. Pretty nice day - a little warm, but not too bad. Sweated quite a bit though...it's good for me. :) I tell you, exercising with a group makes things go by a lot faster!
I'm on the right. As the photographer, it's usually pretty obvious where we end up. :)
As an aside, as early as a year ago, I wouldn't have posted this picture without cropping all the other people out. Then I realized - by reading this book about model releases - that there are many legal and legitimate ways that you can I can use the likenesses of others without a model release. I think we have at least journalistic, self-promotional and public space; just to name a few. Nice, eh?
I started digging into this whole area after I got into a little "discussion" about taking a picture of someone's girlfriend (she was cool with it, he was not) in a completely public area. "You should ask people before you take their picture." So I said "Well, I don't want to be a jerk, but we're in public, at a festival, and no one can have any reasonable expectation of privacy here unless you're in the bathroom or something. Also, if photographers always asked, there wouldn't be any candid photographs...sorry!" After we fought for a bit, him being completely unreasonable, I deleted the lame-ass picture of the tattoo on the back of his girlfriend's neck (she loved that I took the picture, by the way), he walked away, and didn't want to talk anymore. Some people are just very sad, you know?
Also, I need to mention once again, how much I love my Gorillapod . People are impressed that I can take pictures like this using my portable studio in my pockets. With this and the awesome Custom Timer on the Canon PowerShot SD870IS, it's easy. I set it for a 10 second delay, and then had it take 8 shots (it takes a shot per second). There was only one shot where everyone was visible, so the guy in front was lifting his leg...and then he shifted and covered the girl behind him in every frame. See? It's good I took eight shots.

"Fasting Before Surgery" :
If you are planning to have surgery you shouldn’t eat or drink for 8 to 12 hours prior to your action. It is very significant that you should follow these instructions to avoid complexity during and after your surgery.

I'm gonna try and make this the only camera phone picture that I use,
but I really wanted a sp with Carter in it and it's hard to set up the
tripod and timer while I'm at work.
So anyway, I never wanted kids until my friend Katie had her little
boy, Carter. Don't get me wrong, I have always loved kids but I am 6.5
years older than my sister and 7.5 years older than my brother and
after my parents divorced, my mother worked full time so I sort of
ended up being the other parent by default. Of course my mom was still The Boss, but making sure they washed their hands, ate dinner, did their homework and so forth was my job- so by the time I was grown I was all "Why would I want kids?I already had kids."
But then there was Carter. I was immediately smitten in a way that was unusual even for me and then one day when he was about 8 months old I was watching him for Katie and he fell asleep in my arms. For twohours. And even though my arm was completely dead, I refused to put him down, which was when my co-worker Ms. Jeanne said to me "You know Stef, if you and Zach had a baby, you would love him even more than you love Carter."
It was like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. MORE than I love
Carter? Not freaking possible. But that was the first time the image
of a little boy that looks like Zach but has my eyes popped into my
head and I really hope someday I get to meet him.
Heaven help me if it's a girl though. I'm useless with girls. =)
And before you ask, no I am not currently pregnant and have no
immediate plans to do anything about it. This is all firmly rooted in
"someday". =)

Participants wear authentic, heavy medieval armor (14th-15th century style) and aim to take down opponents through grappling and strikes"

JUSTIN MOORHOUSE is going to Edinburgh Fringe this year - but not before he has given you a PREVIEW of his new show People and Feelings on Sunday 3 July 2016 at the King's Arms Theatre in Salford.
Pictured here looking like he's been on a Stone Roses photo shoot, the Greater Manchester Fringe patron is back on the road and better than ever. He is a little slimmer but still as “belly laugh funny”, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Justin played Dean Upton, landlord of the Rovers Returns' rival pub The Flying Horse and was pitted against Steve McDonald in a pub cricket match. He has also appeared in Phoenix Nights with Peter Kay and the Ken Loach film Looking for Eric with Manchester United legend Eric Cantona.
Tickets are £5 and all proceeds from this Edinburgh Preview show go to Wood Street Mission, who help children and families living in Manchester and Salford with everyday items most of us take for granted.
Wood Street’s mission is to help alleviate the effects of poverty on local children and their families through practical help. Wood Street’s vision is that all children in Manchester and Salford should live a life free from poverty.
The Guardian said about his show last year "the amount of first-rate comic craft that goes into his deceptively simple routines is worthy of admiration" he's had a think about people, and feelings.
Tickets for Justin Moorhouse PEOPLE AND FEELINGS PREVIEW are available from: www.ticketea.co.uk/tickets-justin-moorhouse-people-and-fe...

As I recall from my tropical fish aquarium days, goldfish, a variety of cod, can survive at rather elevated temperatures.
