5/22/08: Day 167 Tummy Tuck Day 22: Before and After
HOLY COW, I'm posting the before picture, folks. I must be crazy, but I am so pleased with the results, thus far, that I don't even care!
What a journey this has been... MUCH easier than I expected. I can't believe I'm still in the healing process and my tummy looks so great.
I want to thank you all for such wonderful support. I have read and re-read comments and emails and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it all!

5/14/08: Day 159 Tummy Tuck Day 14: Confidence
Though I’m only 14 days out from the surgery, I am already discovering a confidence I haven’t felt in a long, long time. This surgery has already made such a difference in my life…
4/30/08: Day 145 Surgery Eve
In 12 hours, I am going to be getting prepped for surgery… This picture is an illustration of my feelings at this very moment.
Not too long after Lanie was born, I learned that the large amount of extra skin on my stomach was nothing that would be disappearing. After having Jace a year ago, the situation worsened and has made me severely self-conscious of my midsection. After visiting my family doctor, he explained that even with a healthy diet and hard exercise, nothing can make skin spring back to its original state if it has decided not to.
For me, that was difficult news to hear. I’m no supermodel and not necessarily vain; however, this amount of extra skin is just not acceptable. I knew then that after we were done having children, I would have to take the drastic action and get an abdomnioplasty (tummy tuck). That tummy tuck is tomorrow!
In this shot, I blurred out my stomach skin because I am just not comfortable displaying it to the world. Maybe in months to come, I will post a before and after, but that will be a LONG time from now!
I beg that if you comment, please don’t judge me harshly. This is a very personal decision that I have made and I have many, many reasons for deciding to embark on this journey.
In these next weeks of recovery, I will especially appreciate your comments. I know there is a hard road ahead of me, and I thank you in advance for your words to me!
5/2/08: Day 147 Tummy Tuck Day 2: Revealed
I was able to sleep a long night’s sleep, thank goodness, waking only for Blake to dispense more meds to me. When I woke up for the day, I felt just as good as I had yesterday. My muscles are extremely sore, but not actually painful. The soreness is managed well by Vicodin, but what isn’t really? HA HA!
The only agitations so far are an extremely dry mouth, a teeny bit of nausea, horrid gas pains and my vision is actually a little blurred when I try to look at anything up close. I’m hoping the vision clears up along with my weaning from Vicodin – in a few days, I suppose.
I had my first check-up today and everything looks amazing! Way better than I expected. I have read about bad bruising and swelling, and I have only a bit of swelling. I have to drainage tubes in and they aren’t as irritating as I thought they would be. The doc says I will probably have them for about a week, or so. My abdomen is wrapped in a very tight binder, so I think that helps the tubes stay stationary.
Other than that, I’m doing well! I can’t thank you all enough for your good vibes and prayers – it made a huge difference to me!
5/3/08: Day 148 Tummy Tuck Day 3: Refreshed
Another day down! I had another wonderful night’s sleep and woke up to feeling rested. I did forget, however, how sore everything is after resting for such a long period of time! Once I got up out of the recliner I am living in and was moving around, I felt great again.
My husband is the world’s best, so he set his alarm for 3:15am and got me up to take my pills so the morning time wouldn’t be so bad. What a guy!
I am still hardly able to eat anything. I am taking a bite here and there, just to keep food in my belly, but the thought of eating an entire meal disgusts me. …And under normal circumstances, I am a food LOVER! This same loss of appetite happened to me after both c-sections, so I’m not really surprised.
I took a nap, woke up and my sister was nice enough to come over to watch the kids for a while. Poor Blake probably needed a break with some alone time, but instead he gave me a shower! I can’t tell you how wonderful warm water and soap felt. It was quite rejuvenating.
After the shower, Blake got me all bandaged back up (I still have 2 drains, the incision and a binder to care for) and here I am.
I am definitely having longer periods of feeling good before I start to wear out again. I was originally taking a full Vicodin pill every 4 hours and have cut back to taking just a half every 6 hours, so I am sure that has something to do with my increase in energy. The worst part about it all, so far, are the over-the-top gas pains. They hurt SO bad. The swelling and sore muscles aren’t even too horrible, unless I have to cough, and – YOWZA – that is a killer.
Overall, I am still happily surprised with this process! I read the good and the bad and must say that my experience seems to be on the really good side. I feel SO fortunate. And even more fortunate to have such a great group of flickr friends like you!! Your kind emails and comments truly have made this recovery easier.

6/19/08: Day 195 Tummy Tuck Day 50: Swimsuit-ready!
Wow – has it been only 7 weeks? I feel like it was a lifetime ago now!
As of a couple of weeks ago, I am feeling almost completely healed. I will sometimes bend or stretch certain ways and my body gently reminds me that I had major surgery not long ago, but otherwise, I don’t feel any sort of discomfort anymore. I am still slightly numb in the strip from my breastbone to my pubic bone, but nothing that is weird or uncomfortable.
I have slept on my belly a few times now. It didn’t last long, but I did it, which makes me happy!
I will be traveling to Phoenix for work in a month, and – for the first time in 3.5 years – feel swimsuit-ready.
5/12/08: Day 157 Tummy Tuck Day 12: Fantasy over coffee
Some nights as I have my after-dinner coffee, I pretend – for just one moment – I am sitting in a lounge, sipping on an adult beverage, smoking a Camel Ultralight and gossiping with my girlfriends. That I have nothing else to do for the evening except people watch and flirt with my husband (though we’re not married in this fantasy). That I get drunk, chain smoke and possibly dabble in a game of shuffleboard (the bar kind). That I have nothing to wake up early for the next morning. That I have nothing on the agenda for the entire week. Except maybe to lay poolside and do it all again night after night.
…And that is typically when Lanie runs up to give me a giant hug and ask me to read to her before bed. And then I realize I wouldn’t trade these moments to go back to the glory days. Not for the entire world.

5/7/08: Day 152 Tummy Tuck Day 7: Being an overachiever has a price…
I just couldn’t stand being up in my room for another day. So, I decided to join in the festivities going on downstairs. I had friends watching Lanie and Jace, which meant that I had lots of great company! There was no way I was going to stay up in my bed and miss out on that.
When Blake and the kids got up for the day (sometime in the 7 o’clock hour), I got up, too. I did relax as Blake took the kids through their normal morning routine. He left for work later in the day than usual and then my friend, Beth, and her kids came over to help me out. It was great visiting with them! We ate and played and even went outside for a while. Beth continually kept telling me to sit down and stop doing things but did I listen? Noooooo. I was feeling really great! I was practically acting as normal, except I was not lifting anything over 5 pounds.
As Beth and her kiddos were leaving, our friend Karen came over. Karen is such a fantastic lady and we had a great afternoon visit. We played with the kids and talked and talked… Again, Karen warned that I should sit down to rest, but did I? Heck no – I was still feeling really fantastic!
I noticed I was standing completely upright most of the day, too. My drains were hardly producing anything, so I knew I was on the mend.
Once Blake got home from work, we ate, played with the kids more, got them ready for bed and then I decided it was time for my own shower. When I took the binding off of my waist, I knew I was in for a doozy of a night. My stomach was swollen, even underneath the tight binder support. Everything was puffy and started to really throb once it was out in the open. I sat in the shower for a long, long time a cursed myself for ever thinking I could be normal again after only a week post-surgery.
Once I got out and dried off, we re-dressed my abdomen and I could hardly get up again for the remainder of the night. I was sore and tired and resorted back to my Vicodin.
Lesson learned. I am no superwoman!

The incision
Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. You and your plastic surgeon will discuss which incision options are appropriate for your desired outcome. Incision options include: along the areolar edge (peri-areolar incision), the fold under the breast (inframammary fold) and in the armpit (axillary incision). A belly-button approach is associated with a higher complication rate.
Inserting and placing the breast implant After the incision is made, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either.

Closing the incisions

Nothing too new today… resting and getting stronger. The rest is sure making a difference in the healing. I’m no tummy tuck expert, but I think the results are fantastic considering the short time since surgery. =)

5/8/08: Day 153 Tummy Tuck Day 8: One week!
Wow – today makes one week since my tummy tuck surgery. …And how did I celebrate? By getting my drains removed – woohoo!
I know, I know. It may seem like a mere blip on the tummy tuck timeline, but let me tell you – it is SO much more.
Having two tubes running into holes in my body (specifically right on top of my pubic bone) just hasn’t been the party I had hoped for. =) The whole getup included two grenades (which are the small, clear, plastic bulbs you’ve probably noticed in other pics, such as yesterday’s 365) that are filled with bodily fluids, the tubes that connect them to my body, the holes in my skin the tubes enter through and over a foot (per drain) of rubber stripping that ran through my abdomen like a maze. The rubber strips had many, many tiny holes all over them that acted as a reverse irrigation system. The plastic grenades had created a suction that helped the fluid suck up through those holes and pull into the grenade, thus creating the “drain.”
As I sit on the table at the doctor’s today, the nurse told me to take a deep breath and with my exhale, she would pull out the drain (one at a time). So, I took the first deep breath and as the air exited my body, I felt every inch of tubing moving through the channels it laid within. As I ran out of breath, I realized it was still being pulled out! Man, that foot of tubing feels like 10 feet when it’s coming out of my body…
It didn’t hurt, just felt horribly strange. Like a worm-like alien was being cast out with an exorcism.
I actually felt a little lightheaded once it was out, which is highly unlike me. Even after having two babies moving around inside of me, I can vouch that this was an entirely different experience.
Before I could excitedly ask, “Can I do it again, PLEASE,” she was on to the left side asking if I could take another deep breath. And the second worm-like alien drain was pulled from my abdomen much like a tape measure retracts back into its shiny, silver casing when you let go of the end.
Aside from that fun, I did get rest today and plan on doing the same tomorrow and the next day. Gotta make sure I give the two gaping holes near my girly parts plenty of time to close up on their own. …Just another Thursday night!
