Alberobello, an interior of the "Sovereign Trullo".
The biggest trullo in the village is called Sovereign Trullo. It was built by the family Perta in the middle of the eighteenth century. Now this two-story building is a museum: you can visit the interior, in a vintage style, reconstructed through the testimonies of older inhabitants.
A trullo (plural, trulli) is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. Their style of construction is specific to the Itria Valley, in the Murge area of the Italian region of Apulia.
Trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. In the town of Alberobello, in the province of Bari, whole districts contain dense concentrations of trulli.
The golden age of trulli was the nineteenth century, especially its final decades, which were marked by the development of wine growing.

The Putignano cave (or Grotta del Trullo) is the first karst cave that was used for tourism in Puglia.
Its discovery dates back to May 29, 1931 when, on the occasion of the excavation work for the execution of a sewer trunk, by chance this large cavity was discovered that opened a few meters below the ground level, like a huge dome "on the negative ".

Also know as Goosander...
And when I was already thinking that I'd return home without phtographing this species, in the same day I had two encounters with it. I wish the light was better...

After getting settled in our evenings Trullo digs we headed out in the countryside surrounding Alberobello to capture some Trulli in their natural habitat, you can usually tell the ones looking for an owner that will restore it as they will not have the final whitewash coating of lime that you see on the occupied homes.
A trullo is usually a square base with a conical roof generally the main room is under the conical rooftop and anterooms are off the sloping roofline, for the more well to do you would see multiple rooftop cones and larger compound usually enclosed by a stone wall like the one pictured here.
A tradition in region for the more affluent was to decorate the cone tops with fancy ornamentation and also to paint the roof facing the public with religious or superstitious symbology usually having to do with warding off evil doing of one kind or another or maybe just to show off your skill and purse.

ALBEROBELLO - is a small town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia and is famous for its unique trullo buildings. The trulli of Alberobello have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.
In the late 18th century – 19th century Trulli were upgraded, by adding wells for collecting rainwater or cellars, used for food storage, located always below the Trulli.

Toch heel bijzonder !
Traditional Apulian (Italy) dry stone hut with a conical roof. Trulli generally were constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings in the nineteenth century.
The singular is Trullo for these Conical shaped houses that are characteristic of Apulia, the South Eastern Region of Italy.

Leaving Gallipoli we headed towards the interior of Puglia making our way towards a Truli touristy but beautiful place and our destination for the evening Alberobello, nonetheless before arriving at our evening destination we stopped at yet another wonderful town, Martina Franca the Grand Dame of the Valle d'Itria for a little authenticity, a walkabout and a pranzo.
The design of a Trullo had been around since 1000AD and were an ingenious use of the many pieces of limestone pulled from the fields as farmers and laborers worked the land for agriculture, the conical roof over a rectangular base shed water well and collected the smoke from the heating/cooking fires like a monstrous chimney keeping it quite pleasant inside with a feeling of openness in a small space due to the high ceilings.
Entering the back roads of the Valle d’Itria you begin to see Trulli scattered across the olive tree draped landscape some restored to beyond their glory others like the one picture here on a dusty back road awaiting someone with a vision and euro’s to bring it to life as well as the patience to deal with the bureaucracy of the heritage protections that are involved in restoring such a treasure.

Trulli love conquerors all. Visited here when very young, and always wanted to return. Little more commercial and congested, but the magic is still here. One of the true treasure to the world. Need to get off the commercial path to find some solace.
Sept. 2018
Feliz nueva semana!!
